One of the guys that I speak to in the gym is a real Froch fan-boy. Our discussions often turn into arguments when he claims that Calzaghe retired purely to avoid fighting Froch and (according to him), should Calzaghe have fought Froch then it would have been a KO.
I can say two things about people who are of this opinion.
1. If I were ever to drink with them, 9/10 I would end up punching them if they said that.
2. They clearly live life ignorant to the sheer adaptability in Calzaghe's game.
I'm not saying Froch is a bad fighter...what I am saying is that he is a disrespectful and needs a good knocking off of someone. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to see Calzaghe do it.
Froch's power is overrated, its the type of power that is good against bums in the nottingham arena but shit at the top level.
It's the type of 12th round power that dropped and finished JT - was that a bum at the Nottingham arena?
Froch ain't shit and this super middleweight tourney is gonna prove that. He got lucky 1 time against Taylor who sucks now, why all this hype about him?
Kessler's #1 based on what?
For all the skill and technical ability that he supposedly has? I've yet to see him win a fight that backs up these claims. I didn't see anything in the Calzaghe fight to suggest this either.
I think Kessler's good by the way, but the jury's out until i see him beat someone of note.
Think Lacy (Froch) vs Calzaghe only with everyone knowing the winner this time, totally lobsided victory for the Welshman.
No serious poster here has ever said Carl could beat joe.
Interestingly Daggum probably has Froch by 1st round KO.
The comment about being mad was not directed at you, but for the people saying Calzaghe by KO. I think theres more chance Joe coming out under the English flag than there is of him stopping Carl.
Yeah I know man, and I can see what your getting at. Kessler is the clear #1 and favourite though, I tend to think the others in this tourney are being over rated and I'm a fan of Abraham. Fair point on Carl dude, I do agree it's unlikely.
:lol1: I liked the first line!!
Calazghe showed a good beard in many of his fights, not just the Kessler fight. His trouble is he doesn't train, spar, study his opponents and get a style/gameplan ready, so often gets caught early and relies on adapting.
Mitchell laid him on his back with a good shot but again he was pretty much un phased, and went on the TKO the same round, and did rattle Byron.
Hopkins does still have reasonable power, he did rattle Kelly a bit and probably could have gone for the knock out. Calzaghe again was fairly un phased by that knock down.
So the proof of the pudding in chin, is not the physics of being physically put down, but how you've soaked up that power. And he does, soak up that power, to the point it can knock him over but he's still ok.
That is precisely what an iron chin is, so to me, Kessler landed loads of very hard shots and he was fine, balanced, Froch would quite simply not be able to land as many and would not KO him based on the evidence.
As for Calzaghe's power, I never really got into this, most have only said he'd UD. Hes not KOing Froch any more than he is Kessler.
So the matters of chin and power are in the most part, not the most pressing matters in this fight, based on all of that. But if Calzaghe can get close to TKOing Kessler on a body shot, then he could Froch.
But yes, in all likelyhood a UD.
Kessler will pick up no more than one loss in this tourney imo, but your right he could get caught as he doesn't adapt enough.

Well mother wants me home by 10.30 so we can't play for too long.
Firstly, Joe showed a good beard in the Kessler fight but you forgot to mention how Joe was decked by Jones and Hopkins who, at this stage of their careers, were not heavy punchers. Granted both punches were well timed, however if Carl can land flush I think Joe could certainly be put into difficulty.
Kessler was in trouble with body punches, but was no where near being TKO'd; he might have had to taken a knee at the worst.
In the last five years Joe showed basically no real knockout power, in direct contrast to his early career when he had very heavy hands. No doubt in my mind down to his hand problems. Froch is easier to hit, but I just don't see Joe hurting him with the pitty patty punches, which would be enough to win a comfortable decision.
I consider myself a Calzaghe fan, but nowhere near as big as I used to be. His last fight left a sour taste for me while Calzaghe fans on here are constantly on Kessler's nuts at in an attempt to improve Joe's legacy. Lets see how Kessler does in this SMW tournament, because I have a feeling he could lose a couple.

Calzaghe would kill froch.....
Taylor nearlly did it but was way to tired near the end...calzaghes stamina would just take everything away from froch, n calz chin is great
I'll play along...
Kessler landed several full power flush shots on Calzaghe's chin and he didn't even go down, was fine. How is Froch's 5% more power at most (I'mt not convinced it's any) going to KO Calazaghe? That's even if he can land more of those shots with less speed and accuracy than Kessler. So very unlikely on both fronts.
Secondly, what's the point in Froch having a tougher chin than Kessler? Calzaghe was unlikely to to head shot and KO Kessler nor would he Froch. So where's the benefit?
Calzaghe did hurt Mikkel with a body shot however, which would have lead to a TKO, Technical Knock out , so what's to say he couldn't to Froch whom is far easier to hit?

Carl has more power and a better chin.
Anyone that thinks Joe is knocking Carl out is mad. Joe will take the decision, but has no chance of knocking Carl out, unless its one of those Manfredo stoppages.

So f.ucking what? Can you see any of this current crop doing any better in the same circumstance?
the current crop of SMW's seems to be getting a bit of extra love recently what with the super 6 and all that
alot of people seem to overestimate their abilities, their all good fighters don't get me wrong but someone was saying on NSB that if froch manages to beat them all he already has a better resume than zaghe which imo is clearly false.
calzaghes faced alot of former champs (brewr, mitchell, reid etc) and dominated the top 10 in his division (ottke excluded). in all honesty joes reign at SMW does remind me alot of lennox lewis, they were the best SMW long before they unified the belts and faced a level of comp that is/will only be accredited in hindsight.
What does Froch do better than Kessler exactly?
Erm, is there even one thing?
Carl has more power and a better chin.
Anyone that thinks Joe is knocking Carl out is mad. Joe will take the decision, but has no chance of knocking Carl out, unless its one of those Manfredo stoppages.
any fighter with an iota of boxing skill (i.e. able to follow a jab with a straight hand), good stamina and a chin would be able to give froch a close run for his money.
froch is tailor made for calzaghe
It cracks me up how on this forum Calzaghe 'stole' victory from B-hop, bullied an 80 yo jones jnr and in general was a fraud and a slapper, yet in light of the recent tournament, which 99% of posters on here are really buzzed about, yet everybody recognises the fact that Joe would have beaten them all.
Could the Hopkins fight not have went either way? Also RJJ had been ktfo 5 years prior by lesser competition, so it is safe to assume that he was shot to shit. The guy is embarrassing himself by wearing pirate suits ffs.
