EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: JOSHUA CLOTTEY
By Ryan Burton
Welterweight contender Joshua Clottey spoke with ********** about his recent loss to Miguel Cotto and his future plans.
**********: Now that you have had a couple weeks to digest your loss to Miguel Cotto what are your thoughts on the fight?
Joshua Clottey: Well I still feel I won the fight with Cotto. Everybody keeps talking about the last two rounds. To me those two rounds he was running and I was being the aggressive guy chasing him. If I chase him where ever I see him what else can I do? In the 12th round he did nothing. I was throwing all the jabs. I think I should have won.
BT: Do you think Cotto should have a point deducted when he threw you down in the 4th round or when he hit you in the back of the head in the 12th?
JC: You know I felt like I was fighting against Cotto, the judges, the referee and the Puerto Rican fans. I feel like I was fighting all of them including the one that scored the fight for me. He hit me with a rabbit punch and he threw me down hard. The referee should have done something about it. When he hit the back of my head you could see the reaction of the judge. He said, "shit!" So why didn't he deduct a point? Instead he didn't do anything.
BT: When he threw you down it seemed like you took a few rounds to get back in your groove. Were you hurt from when he threw you down?
JC: Yes my knee hurt because he threw down on the floor hard and he stepped on my foot. I wasn't going to quit. I had to keep fighting.
BT: Cotto was backing up in the 11th and 12th rounds but he was landing more punches than he did in the previous few rounds. Those were rounds he won. Did you get tired or why weren't you as effective as you were in the prior rounds?
JC: No I wasn't tired. He was just running. I was trying to take my time and cut off the ring. I think I won the round because I was still punching and he was running and doing nothing.
BT: It looks like Cotto is going to fight Manny Pacquiao next so an immediate rematch is out of the question. Who do you want to fight next?
JC: I would like to fight Paul Williams, Shane Mosley or Andre Berto. I am ready to fight with them because you see right now everybody was thinking Cotto was going to beat me and knock me out. I told everybody that Cotto cannot beat me. I want to fight Mosley, Williams and Berto because they are all big names.
BT: Paul Williams says that everybody is afraid to fight him but you are calling him out right now. Do you think he will fight you?
JC: I am not scared of Paul Williams. Let me tell you a short story about Paul Williams. I saw him on Facebook. He is my friend on Facebook and he insulted me on there. He was calling me names. I proved myself to HBO. Everybody would want to see me fight him. If you want to step up to the plate I am ready for him. I don't care if he insults me but if you are going to insult me at least talk to my promoter and sign up to fight me.
BT: That is definitely a fight HBO would approve after Williams win over Winky Wright and the excitement of your split decision loss to Cotto.
JC: Exactly. Everybody is going to love that fight and you know I will show everybody that I can beat him.
BT: Speaking of Facebook, you recently had question where you asked the fans if you should switch trainers. Why did you put that on Facebook?
JC: (laughing) You saw that?
BT: I read a little bit (laughing). I know a lot of this stuff. You can't get it past me.
JC: I had a problem with my trainer but I don't want to talk about it. I think that I will change my trainer. I don't know for sure.
BT: Have you thought of who you would like to train you?
JC: I don't know. I can't really say right now.
BT: If you get another big fight with a Paul Williams, Shane Mosley or Andre Berto do you think you need to do anything different in your approach to the fights to make sure you get a victory?
JC: Well each fight is different. A fight with Paul Williams is going to be a different fight. A fight with Shane Mosley is going to be a different fight and a fight with Andre Berto is going to be a different fight. I always train hard. I always come to the ring and fight my best. I fight the same way with my style. Those guys I wan to fight. We need to fight each other. Forget about fighting Pacquiao. We all should fight each other.
BT: If you win against one of those guys you become one of the top names in the welterweight division which will bring you a lot of opportunities. What are your thoughts on that?
JC: Right right. That is exactly what I want to do. If you know Joshua Clottey you know I am always about fighting the best fights. I don't make a boring fight. My fights are always exciting.
BT: Do you have a message for the fans?
JC: I want to thank the fans. I think I won the fight and I thank the fans for their support. I really want to thank everybody including the Mexican fans and the Puerto Rican fans for their support. I especially want to thank ********** and you Ryan and your friend Greg Leon.
BT: Good luck landing that big fight you are looking for.
JC: Thank you Ryan.

Aww shit I dont think anyone wants a part of you Joshua even Mosley and Paul Williams. Berto shakes in his boots when he watches you dance to the ring
Fighters insulting eachother through Facebook lmao
We truly are in the digital age.
It'd be even funnier if the Paul Willams that messaged Clottey was one of those fake accounts people set up. The dude would have created a fight without knowing it.
i hear little crying from clottey here...which is not desireable.
not about how he believe he won the fight (it was a close fight and i can 110% respect and understand his point of view on how he won) but he's still keeping the, "i got thrown to the ground and punched in the back of the head illegally" when he didnt get thrown to the floor (there was some acting involved...watch on slow motion and you can see the late reaction...as you can on the punch to the back of the head. clottey was holding cottos arm and wouldnt let go and turned his back to cotto at the same time.
the punch wasnt even that hard of a punch (you can see cotto tried to let up a bit) and you can once again see the late reaction from clottey.
so idk why he's complaining about that.
but i can see how he thought he won...it was a close fight...split decisions are rarely "robberies" just different views on a round or two usually determine the fight.
Clottey is the kind of fighter we need to see more of though. he's not afraid of anyone, trains hard, and always wants to fight the very best. not to mention he has a crowd pleasing style and a fight with berto, mosley, or williams would all be very entertaining if you ask me.
hope he lands a fight.
mosley should take it as a stay busy fight at the very least. and it gives clottey a crack at him also.
agree with the bold bit and personally i dont think clottey is in a position to complain, hes been a pro for a long time and has been accused of using the odd 'unorthodox' tactic now and again as well.
i too hope he lands a fight especially against berto who is now p1ssing me off, hes hogging a belt and isn't good enough to hang with the big dogs. imo clottey should try and get a shot at the belt by becoming a mandatory to bertos belt, it would give him the chance to get a W following the loss and gets him a big fight.

Clottey is a good fighter, who lost a very close fight,he was never owned by anyone,I would love to see him get the Punisher payday, but I don't expect him to win!!Just goes to show Clottey's heart!!The only welterweight to actually call on Punishment, any other welterweight,u hear crickets!!
Yeah I think so. Williams is too damn active. Willaism beats any of the 147lbs and 154 lbers IMO. However Joshua doesn't like him, and is pissed that Williams said he would knock him back to Ghana on facebook, so let them fight.
Internet fights!!! Williams probably could knock Clottey to Jupiter.
clottey sounds like a crazy old psycho ex girlfriend at this point. i like his enthusiasm to fight williams, but let's be real, williams beats him 8 to 4 rounds.

Joshua Clottey is the man. We know that he beat Cott, but mr. 116-111 was judging it. I would like to see him fight Mosley. Lmao. Why is Paul Williams talking shit on facebook?
Clottey is such a bitch. The dude is still complaining about the loss, rabbit punch, the throw down. Just let it go Clottey and go after Mosley, Berto or Paul Williams!
You good boy but let it go!
if you lost a close SD in the next man's backyard you'll be salty to......if Cotto was hit with a rabbit punch you'd be bitchin' hard........just look at how you ASSUME Cotto was beat by plaster........when there's no visual evidence of Marg wrappin' his hands with the bricks :nonono:........but we us logic to reach a conclusion on the plaster case......so use the SAME logic on something that can be proven by visual footage.......we actually see Cotto throwin' a intentional punch to the back of Clottey's head......and after being stamped by right hands in the 5th he threw Clottey down outta FRUSTRATION.......its video evidence of this shit.......Marg's wraps issue in the Cotto fight can't REALLY be proven.........so I think you SHOULD let that go but you won't so you just EXPOSED yourself as a HYPOCRITE!!
clottey was naive to think he didn't need a KO on the eve of PR day, at MSG with a potential cotto-pacman showdown looming.
clottey's problem in the late rounds was that cotto sussed out his weakness. clottey was either on offense or on defense he couldn't sit in the pocket and time cotto if he could have done that he would have taken the last two rounds.
cotto was clever, clottey says he was running but cotto used good lateral movement, cotto would move side to side and land punches in 2's and 3's when he did clottey would go back to defense and cover up by the time he turned around and was facing miguel, he realized miguel had already moved. the time taken by clottey to switch from defense to offence is what cost clottey.
id like to know what the problem was with his trainer, was it personal over tactics, the gamepla?
Clottey should known he needed the KO in MSG on the eve of the PR parade day.
It was a close fight, only a nutthugger would say otherwise. And if a fights close who do you think its going to go to? Clottey that had like no fans before that fight and most likely earned a shit load more fans, or the puertorican who had fans come across the country to watch him fight?
I love clottey. I kept saying it before the cotto fight that cotto should fight anyone EXCEPT clottey. Clottey would beat floyd, mosley, pacman and in a rematch....maybe even cotto. He would tear up margarito. Now williams....hmmmm...him too. Clottey is trouble, he is not that great, just trouble.
clottey sounds like a crazy old psycho ex girlfriend at this point. i like his enthusiasm to fight williams, but let's be real, williams beats him 8 to 4 rounds.
hes my friend on facebook already and we talk all the time
Did you tell him that you think that Williams is a bad style for him to fight? If Wright got spanked, what the hell can Clottey do better? And wright looked game for the fight but it was just a bad style match up for him, I don't think he had much ring-rust. For the fact, that if I remember correctly I had Wright winning the first round comfortably but after that Williams took over.
Williams would spank Clottey. Cotto gave Clottey a tough fight and Williams has longer arms and a higher workrate that would cause Clottey serious problems. Clottey can say he felt he won that fight since he is the one in the ring, but can he deny the fight was close?
Also, for him to call Cotto a runner is a cheap shot. What does Clottey call what Roy Jones Jr does? Cotto was using the ring and using his boxing skills similar to what Roy does. Running would be just going backward and left and right and not throwing any punches.
By the way Clottey talks, he thinks Roy Jones Jr is a runner for using his footwork and boxing skills.
Make the Williams fight happen, I would like to see what P-Will actually said about Clottey.
see him an request to be his friend then ! i think im going to ask him to be my friend 2!
joshua is a funny guy!
