According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Atlas might be training Povetkin. Here's an excerpt from the article:
3. Alexander Povetkin (17-0)
The 2004 Olympic gold medalist looms as one of Wladimir Klitschko's mandatory challengers for a fight that could take place in the fall. ESPN's own Teddy Atlas may be in his corner going forward as his trainer. Atlas was supposed to spend about two weeks in Russia working with Povetkin in a trial run for both men. Wouldn't that be an interesting pairing?
(For Tunney) I ask: Does Teddy Atlas' hate for Wladimir ever end?
he faded terribly in his chambers fight
That made no sense, it was chambers who faded. Chambers didn't throw shit in the later rounds. The early rounds are actually what chambers won, the later rounds he threw next to nothing and just kept in a shell defense that povetkin was punching through.
It is too early for Sasha to fight Wlad -- the fight would be too unequal at this point. I am not sure how Atlas can help. He does not have a great record as a trainer.
Although I can’t stand Teddy (because of his Klitschko hate), I would like to see him help improve Povetkin so that the fight can be, at least, a little competitive..
Atlas didn't make Tyson the fighter he was and I never claimed he did. He has had experience training Tyson though and if he is able to teach Povetkin the things that Tyson could do, Povetkin could improve greatly.
I'm sure there's a reason why Atlas is being hired as his trainer (or atleast tried out), his previous experience training Mike Tyson being one of them.
D'Amato was possibly the best ever at training fighters like Povetkin. If Atlas has half the knowledge of D'Amato, his mentor, he could do wonders for Povetkin who has been accused of being a bit too amateurish.
It was the Jr Olympics. Atlas had left long before the Olympic trials.
1981
Jun --- --- KO 1 U.S. Jr. Olympic Champion Heavyweight
1982
Jun Jonathon Littles KO 2 U.S. Jr. Olympic Tourney, Heavyweight Salem, OR
Jun Don Cozad KO 1 U.S. Jr. Olympic Tourney, Heavyweight Salem, OR
Jun 26 Kelton Brown KO 1 U.S. Jr. Olympic Tourney, Heavyweight Salem, OR
Povetkin has good punch output but he needs to learn how to move his head and upper body better maybe Atlas will work well with him i don't know but it will take a fair bit of time to get those things into his game.
No, not "MOST" of it. He worked as D'Amato assistant only for a brief period of time.
If he works with Povetkin for the next two weeks, will you say he was responsible for Sasha winning Gold at the 2004 Olympics? :smashfrea

Okay, that explains why Tyson lost in the Olympic trials! :lol1:
"Iron Mike" came into his own after Atlas was fired by D'Amato.

I speak very directly.. that can confuse people into thinking I am serious.. 90% of the stuff I post in this lounge is pure crap.. seriously..
My mistake, good debating either way.
I agree Wlad is a very dominant champion and it isn't likely Povetkin will pull it off against him with or without Atlas.
Training a Russian to become to become a Heavyweight champion won't help the Americans any also it is a bit impossible to guess how long Povetkins title reign would be. Hopefully most of your post was sarcastic as conspiracy theories and telepathy sounds a bit far fetched.:cop:

It wasn't; Welt's a chronic pot smoker and as a result, he's paranoid and delusional...:439:
Whoever beats Wlad.. it would be a fluke and their time at the top would be short.. NOTE.. it would be a fluke.. Wlad at this rate will rule for years to come..

Whoever beats him will not.. So if someone can pull off the upset.. it is likely MORE likely an American can claim the spot.. A Russian for 1 and half years is the lesser evil when compared to a Ukrainian for another 8 years
And I am half sarcastic eh?? can't take everything you read on here so seriously..

Having an idiot like Teddy Atlas as his trainer him will reduce Povetkin's chances of defeating Wlad from 2% down to less than 1%.
This is good news for Wlad, but I feel sorry for Povetkin.

Atlas was responsible for training a lot of pros. Many of which did big things as a result of Atlas. He wasn't even able to reap the real rewards on a championship level for many fighters despite having put in much of the most important foundation building. Have you read his book? He's done a lot of good things for fighters. I'm not saying he's always been an angel, but your hate for him is so intense that your completely useless on the topic of Teddy.
i dont know about that, can you name the fighters that atlas has trained who already didnt know how to fight (i.e from scrach or very early besides tyson) who has gone on to do big things? i think he is a good trainer by default just riding on tysons coat tails
I don't know how you could assume a Russian champ would be the lesser of two evils when according to your view of Atlas, he has the Cold War on his mind.
No one ever questioned your deduction skill, but they may be a bit off on this one. Mind reading powers can only work for so long.

Teddy was just an assistant to Cus D'Amato for a brief time until he was fired.

I love Atlas and I love that he's found a reason to get involved again on the big stage. I really hope he meshes well with Povetkin and they decide to extend their training union past 2 weeks. Hard to imagine he can be enough to beat a Klit but this is very exciting.
Teddy was just an assistant to Cus D'Amato for a brief time until he was fired.
Atlas was responsible for most of Tyson's early training. D'Amato was an aging man by then, it was Atlas and later Rooney who had the most to do with Tyson's actual training.
Throwing 80-90 punches a round late in the fight isn't fading. Chambers faded and threw next to nothing.
That's the same fight that I saw. Povetkin has excellent stamina for a heavyweight.
The lesser of 2 evils.. Povetkin should he beat Wlad.. would not defend his title a 3rd time before someone beat him.. hopefully an American..
Look .. I am not an unobservant person.. in fact I am quite the opposite..and I am rarely wrong when it comes to peoples transparencies..
Anyone with half a Brain knows Atlas absolutely cannot stand Wlad Kitschko..

Why would he want to train a Russian fighter if he thought the Cold War was going on? Also, he has been very nice to Wlad lately.

I think Atlas still thinks the Cold War is going on or something..:dunno:
