If a fighter is being outclass to the point that he can't win and he's getting BANGED....what would you as a fan or trainer have him do.....quit and live to fight another day or give the fans that pay to see you a climatic conclusion and go out on your shield?
There's one thing if yuor corner throws in the towel!!But it's something else entirely if the fighter himself just quits on his own,it's called a maloongo!!
I'll answer it this way. Losing is a bad feeling....but losing and knowing you didnt leave everything in the ring, can haunt you for the rest of ur life. Micky Ward who lost 11 fights in his career said something along the lines of..he didnt regret anything he did in boxing, because he felt and he knew he left everything in the ring in every fight.
Like i said, you can lose but if you know you left everything in the ring, you can get over it...but losing and knowing you didn't leave it all in the ring, thats something that is nearly impossible to get over. Hell, its like that with anything in life, not just boxing.
Depends.
I don't consider stopping a fight if one guy is getting pummeled a quit.
as long as its isn't the boxer that is getting pummeled that wants to quit... his corner should do the quitting for him.
Ortiz quit, the camera showed him telling the ref "enough" then you see the ref talking to him, probably telling him if you quit you're done. The ref basically pulled a mercy kill.
If its the 10th round, your way behind on the scorecards and your getting your ass kicked, the shield is stupid, but when its the 6th and your ahead on the score cards ...
What do you call "quitting"?
a) not getting into the ring after taking serious beating because you are scared
b) not into the ring because you are wounded
c) not getting into the ring because the trainer or doc won't let you
d) your corner throws the towel while you are clobbered
e) you turn your back and simply don't fight back, forcing the ref to call it quits
f) you don't get up while the ref is counting, because you know you are outmatched
I think a) is the worst possible thing - being outclassed and afraid, followed by e and f. This means, your foe defeated your body and your spirit.
The others (b, c, d) are not as bad, since staying healthy is very important for any sportsman.
I agree with Larry and what he said...In regards to your post...The reff is supposed to protect the fighter when he can no longer do it himself. JT was out on his feet and the reff stpped the fight that was a good stoppage....This to me was horrible and the worst kind of quitting. I rather he had just feel to the canvas and not got up before ten then do what he did. then his post fightin the ring was even worse....Lefty

a boxer should go out on his shield, but his corner and the fight doctor should know if and when to stop the fight.
Your avatar makes me sick.
Anyway if I was the trainer I would throw in the towel. Obviously some fighters have pride and wouldn't want to call it a day, but if he is taking severe punishment and there is no real chance of him turning it around imho it should be stopped.
Margarito the plaster master seemed to gain fans for going out on his shield. He should have lost fans though for trying to cheat against a 37 old man.
i agree i should said co-sign
