or are you sticking to your story and will only give Manny full credit if the fight is at the official wt. of 147?
in your opinion is this a legit WW championship win for Manny if he wins?
WELTERWEIGHT = 147-141.
145= WELTERWEIGHT.
I dont see any rules broken here. not the first time in history.
Some fans just assume that a fighter has to weigh in at the weight limit everytime.
Pac came in at 138, does this make him a jr. ww. Or Cotto weigh in at 146, does this make him a ww.
For those who voted "No, WW should be at 147", you know that is just the weight limit fo the WW division. A fighter can weigh from 141-147 in the WW. If you look at Cotto's fights at WW, only 2x that he weight in at 147, against Urkal and Margarito. The rest are 146 or 146 1/2.
Pac weigh in at 138 pounds at jr. ww against Hatton. Both fighters has to meet in the middle to make the fight even. But is it really even at 145, its only 1 pound that Cotto has to lose(he weigh 146 against Clottey). Cotto still have an advantage.
Tell me one thing y'all.
Were all the title fights in boxing end up with the exact weight?
for me, i believe WEIGHT agreement is just PAPER.
How can you say that a fight is at 147 when they end up in a different weight during the fight?
There are no perfect match-ups in boxing people.
Even if 2 fighters have the same weight there are still other things that affects the fight (reach, height, age, fight history, dedication in training, habits, etc.)
Hey, i'm not an expert but this is a fact with all these weight issues.
For me, there really ain't no issue at all.
If this 2 wanted to have the fight with or without the belt, let them.
They know their own capacity as much as anyone here does.
Just be happy this fight has been made and enjoy the show.
are you sure youre not an expert?.....lol
No, I really am not. I just watch boxing from time to time.
It's just my view and observation.
I mean people fight in WW but come fight night they end up ballooning to 155 by rehydrating themselves.
So what's the point of having a weight title if the fight doesn't end up with the said weight, as most of you guys keep saying?
For the record, it would be better at 147 if he really wanted to prove something.
But realistically for both pac and cotto, I think 145 is fine.
Why?
Let's say they fight at 147, on the weigh in yes they will meet the maximum weight.
For Cotto, he doesn't have to do some extra effort beause that's his natural weight.
For Pac, he have to gain weight 7lbs.
And this is during the weigh in we're talking about.
Prior to fight night, Cotto will still have to gain some more.
Do you think manny can still catch up after gaining 7lbs?
If cotto will come up to 154 at fight night, then manny need 7lbs more.
Meaning manny needs to gain 14lbs. all in all.
I don't know if what I'm really saying is correct. Again, i'm not expert but that's the way I understand it.
WELTERWEIGHT = 147-141.
145= WELTERWEIGHT.
I dont see any rules broken here. not the first time in history.
There is no minimum weight for any weight class - Henry Armstrong weighed 133lb when he won the Welterweight title. There is only a maximum weight, and for Welterweight that maximum is 147, not 145. Setting a maximum of 145 makes it a catchweight fight. Roach recognises that; he has referred to it as a catchweight fight.
I know it's not the first time that a catchweight fight has been for a world title, and I thought it was bullshit that the title was on the line the previous times it happened as well.
To me it's like saying "I'm the best Welterweight in the world, but only provided that the normal maximum weight rules don't apply."
But as I keep saying, this isn't about whether Pac would deserve credit if he wins, I've already said repeatedly that he would.
He deserves all the credit in the world, considering what weight Cotto could balloon up to after the weigh in.
Manny's slight advantage is only evident in the weigh in. After that, it's all Cotto's.
Even though the welterweights come in as middleweights?
It's the rules of boxing, that the weight class is determined by the weight at the weigh in, the day before the fight.
You're arguing about fair fights and that completely misses the point. I already said Manny should get full credit if he wins. But to say you're the champion of the world at a weight you haven't legitimately fought at according to the rules of boxing is bullshit. Two separate issues.
141-147 is considered welterweight. 147 is the maximum limit for a welterweight fight. beyond that, its another weight class.
141 lb would still be a welterweight fight.
belts have been on the line for weights below the weightclass' maximum limit. this is nothing new.
The contract specifies a maximum of 145. Welterweight means a maximum of 147. That's why it's a catchweight fight, not a Welterweight fight. If it were a Welterweight fight, both fighters would be allowed to weigh anything they liked up to a maximum of 147.
Exactly. He should get full credit for the win, if he wins, but you shouldn't be able to call yourself the Welterweight champion if you're unwilling to fight Welterweights except at catchweight - that's just bullshit.
Even though the welterweights come in as middleweights? If Cotto wants to weigh in at 147, then let's do the weigh-in on fight day. After all, that's how it used to be anyway.
If they want the title on the line then they should fight at the welterweight limit.
I would give Pacquiao credit for a victory over Cotto at 145 but he shouldn't claim himself a title holder at welterweight if the fight is held at a catchweight.
I don't see why they need a catchweight. Cotto never comes in at 147 and Pacquiao will not come in more than 143. Cotto is going to come in at the junior middleweight limit no matter what on fight night. But I won't be surprised if they force a certain weight that Cotto has to be the day of the fight.
Exactly. He should get full credit for the win, if he wins, but you shouldn't be able to call yourself the Welterweight champion if you're unwilling to fight Welterweights except at catchweight - that's just bullshit.
pacquiao is such a disgrace...that pussy doesnt even have the balls to fight Cotto at 147...f*cken catchweight bitch...f*ck manny.
its always funny to see you squirm
I'd give him credit, and lot's of it, but it's still not 147. I'm not saying it wouldn't be an incredible accomplishment, and I'm not saying it wouldn't be worthy of praise, I'm just saying I can't give absolute full credit when it isn't fully welterweight.
If they want the title on the line then they should fight at the welterweight limit.
I would give Pacquiao credit for a victory over Cotto at 145 but he shouldn't claim himself a title holder at welterweight if the fight is held at a catchweight.

By making it at a catchweight, its giving an advantage to one of the fighters.
not necessarily. both fighters are moving away from their comfortable weight to meet at a point to somehow even the playing field. anyway, this may or may not apply to the fight in discussion.
just nitpicking...
Actually, its a catchweight fight. The ww limit is 147, not 144, or 145, or 146.
By making it at a catchweight, its giving an advantage to one of the fighters. Nobody says you have to weigh in at 147, only under it. So, while it is indeed above 140, its still less than the 147 limit.
Its going to be a great fight regardless, but its a bit misleading to say its a welterweight fight when the fighters aren't allowed to come in up to 147 pounds.
the pachuggers dont seem to understand this simple concept
