The question is who had a better career, not who deserved more wins. Ike Quartey does not have 2 official wins over fighters the caliber of Johnny Tapia and 2 more wins at a higher weight class over Bones Adams (who is the caliber of Quartey's best wins).
It's pretty close though as to who was a bigger win. What sets it apart is Quartey is a top 5 win on Wright's resume, Ayala isn't on Morales'.
With all due respect, how did you have Quartey beating Vargas?
Yeah i dont see that either, he beat DLH and Forrest but i thought he lost a close but clear decision to Vargas, if that makes any sense :haha:
Quartey also beat Oscar. And that was a robbery. That was no "close decision that could have gone either way", it was a flat out robbery. I don't see how anyone could come to any other conclusion. I love Oscar, but I was watching that fight wanting to give rounds to Oscar but round after round I just couldn't do it. DLH won 3 rounds in that fight, MAX.
Quartey got robbed against both De La Hoya and Forrest. Had he not he'd surely make the HOF. Quartey truly ducked no one, and was dominated by no one. Very under rated fighter.
But his fight against Winky wasn't all that significant since he didn't have a remote chance of winning and Winky didn't have much to gain from beating him.
This is true. There is no question in my mind that he deserved both decisions over DLH and Forrest.
Never seen it. Was it stopped due to a cut, or something else?
Pretty sure it was a cut. I think there was some sort of controversy about it... Ayala didn't even recognize it apparently when asked about his record. I think they talked about that during Ayala-Tapia I.
Side note: I thought Ayala-Tapia I was a pretty lame fight for getting FOTY. It was one of the only times that I've been watching an FOTY, and have just been praying that it hurries up and gets over.
I was kind of curious as well... I thought Vargas controlled him pretty handily.
Yeah me too. In fact, it very well may have been Vargas's best overall performance as a pro, imo.
Thanks for the info.
Did you see Ayala's first loss against that Japanese titlist when he lost on a TD in the 5th round or so (which is probably the most excusable loss, especially for a pressure fighter, since they come on late).

I thought Adams deserved the decision in the first one. Ayala clearly won the second.

I've never seen them... how should they have been scored?
Yeah, I have heard a lot that Ayala was a super classy guy as well.

Ahhh Bones Adams.. I remember watching those fights with my dad. Even though I'm Texan, I really didn't like Ayala that much..he seemed so fake to me at the time, but from what i hear, he is a really classy guy and all..
Nice trip down memeory Lane...

It was the rematch that Tapia clearly won and got robbed in. The first fight went to Ayala fairly. I've also heard that his fights with Clarence Bones Adams were pretty disputed.
I ended up voting the exact opposite of you... I voted Quartey for career, and Morales-Ayala as the better win... although I can't really explain why I picked one win over the other. Clear domination I guess, and the fact that Ayala was on the slide, considering he lost to Barrera even worse right after the Morales fight.
Even so... Ayala was a career bantamweight and fought Morales at featherweight.

I think Ayala had the better career. His wins over Tapia were against a fighter at his peak and the best in the division. Can't remember which fight, but I thought Tapia took one of them. Both were razor thin and great fights.
I think the Wright fight was worth more to answer the second part of our question. Ike was closer to his best weight.

Ike's best weight was 147 lbs....he fought Winky @ 160.

Ayala did his thing with Tapia, but didn't he get Ko'd by Angel Manfredy?
Quartey is one of the most underrated, underappreciated fighters of his generation... I thought he absolutley beat Vargas as well.. he got caught up with all the politics associated with boxing.. It's a shame that he left during his prime years.. it would have been a huge match against the likes of Judah, Mosely, Margarito, Cotto and he would have gotten into the ring against Paul Williams as well..
Last fight he had against Forrest was a sham.. Everyone knew He won that fight but still left with the L..

First, who had the better career, and second, which win for Wright and Morales respectively is worth more.
Poll coming.
