Bob Arum said
"The fan is not caught up in the mentality of a Floyd Mayweather Jr., who believes in his heart of hearts that to lose is like death and therfore you don't take any chances against anybody who can convincingly beat you."
"This mentality that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has that some of you guys adopt, that really screws up the sport. I mean, as long as he fought his heart out; if he lost the fight, he lost the fight. He didn't lose his popularity. The fans are smarter than the writers and the true fans realize that. The proof is that the fans in New York are just as loyal to Cotto as they've ever been. Maybe more."
Is he right? Discuss.
floyd has two kinds of fans. real fans who like him for his skills, and fake fans who just jump on the bandwagon.
most fighters have this, but floyd being on top so to speak he obviously has more fake fans then the majority of fighters. hense more "fans" would also leave him if he lost than say miguel cotto, cotto has lost some fans since he lost though, belive it. although i think he gained just as many in his performance.
and i think floyd would do the same. taylor is an example of a fighter who gained a larger fanbase when he lost his undefeated record.
boxing is hit and dont get hit..not get beat till you cant talk..that just dumb
Nobody said that, but from a fan's point of view, they are not interested in seeing a boxer enter the ring to play it safe. The point of paying to watch a fight is for the entertainment value. We want to see competitive hand to hand combat. Remember, its a "fight", not capoeira. Now i'm not suggesting that boxers should ignore defense and just go balls to the wall now, but give it your all. Fuk all that "doing enough just to win". We wanna see fighters do it decisevly!
Most of them, yes. The hardcore nuthuggers would just start looking for excuses. Just look at the hardcore Plasterito nuthuggers shalafi, chicana and rogelio not only did Plasterito lose, he got a one sided beatdown, got caught cheating and they are still hanging on to his balls like their lifes depended on it.
It comes with the proffesion. If worrying about being his is what these boxers are worried about, then they're in the wrong field.
No, your obiously going to be hit in this career. Yet, to take more than expected and not respect the sweet science is pretty ignorant.
I'll definitely still be a fan. Floyd is not some prospect who could be "exposed", he's at the tail end of a great career and he is one of, if not the best boxer i've seen in my lifetime
Boxers always lose fans after a loss though
Ya, getting hit a lot and adding brain damage to your future health is being a warrior. That ain't smart..

If Floyd lost while going out on his shield against a guy like Pac or Cotto, he'd be more respected than he currently is with his 0. Fans dont wanna see a fighter play it safe. They wanna see 2 warriors in the ring putting it all on the line. In a fight like that, there really is no loser. Take Marquez/Vasquez for example. Even the loser in those fights are praised!

I would still be a fan. But I agree with Arum. Floyd puts way too much stock in his undefeated record. It makes him sound a bit silly when he re-iterates that, because chances are if he carries on fighting he will lose that 0.
I think so too, another good question would be, if people think the Duran loss had a positive affect on SRL. You think he would be more like Floyd in his selectivity?
Interesting question, I don't know really.
If Mayweather lost, I wouldn't desert him, best believe that :D. I agree with Arum by the way, that 0 does have a negative affect on Floyd.
