likely caused by his weight problems at 140. Although he was stunned once at 147 by Zab Judah, it was a perfect uppercut to the jaw.
In the Mosley fight, he took huge right hand after huge right hand without being hurt at all.
The Mosley-Margarito fight showed that Mosley still has some thunder left in his punches.
Even Margarito-Cotto proves the strength of Cotto's chin, because it wasn't like he was put down on a hard punch that had him on queer street... he was just out of energy and didn't have the strength to defend himself any more.
Sorry for all the Cotto-Mosley threads, but I just watched it for the first time last night, and I thought of quite a few things to say about the fight.
you kidding me?
he ran the last 4 rounds against mosley.
he always turns southpaw because his left hand gets tired.
many of cotto's fight, you don't notice it because some of his opponents are already battered by the bodywork.
trust me, cotto gases. in the margo fight, it was too blatantly apparent to ignore.
Hmmm, I actually saw him doing better once he started boxing against Mosley in the later rounds. I thought it was a strategy shift more than a move to save and conserve energy.
yeah, but gomez as a tune up for margo is pretty stupid. cotto should've fought baldomir for the tune up.
yeah, cotto gave his 100% but it wasn't good enough. can't hate cotto for that, margo was just the better man.
yeah, he deserved this.
true
To be fair, I don't think Gomez was designed to be a tune-up... more of a hype builder for the PPV in July. At the same time, Cintron and Cotto fight nothing alike, so there is no reason why Margarito would fight tin man Cintron to get ready for Cotto.
That doubleheader seriously was a business move by HBO to really hype the fight between Margarito and Cotto up.
Outside of being beaten to death by Margarito, I haven't seen any lapses of stamina at 147 by Cotto.

Uh oh
Somebody went there.
to be fair a lot of boxers do this.
I'm not even a Cotto fan and I get the reason he did all of these:
Gomez - A doubleheader on HBO designed to make Cotto and Margarito look good to build up to a fight between the two. Keep in mind he was coming off beating Zab Judah and Shane Mosley... you do get a fight off once in a while I think.
yeah, but gomez as a tune up for margo is pretty stupid. cotto should've fought baldomir for the tune up.
Margarito - Battered to the point of submission. I don't think him "quitting" means anything, because he was obviously just going to be stopped if he continued after the second knockdown. He didn't have the energy to defend himself. Anyway, I don't understand the big deal about quitting... he gave it his all, it wasn't enough, and he was obviously not going to win at that point. He was thoroughly battered and it went a lot of rounds. I don't really see how he robbed the fans of anything.

Jennings - After a brutal battering from Margarito, he took a fight to build his confidence back and get him back into the game. Plus, it was an easy shot at a belt to put himself back in the picture of importance at 147.
yeah, he deserved this.
I mean, really, I'd take the pepsi challenge of Cotto's last three opponents (keep in mind they are sandwiched by Judah, Mosley and Clottey) against Mayweather's run at 140. Like I said... everyone has some bad fights on their record.
true
its not cotto's chin that fails him at 147, its his stamina.

This is Cotto's last 3 fights...Gomez, quit vs. Margarito, Jennings.

Yep, his team even said he sometimes used to train mainly to lose weight, rather than prepare for his opponent. He was weaker at 140, at 147 he is comfortable and solid.
He stood up to some hard punches from Mosley, but he was still rocked a lot of times in that fight. The incident that sticks out to me is of where he got hurt in the 10th round and then Benji Estevez wiped up a wet spot on the canvass to give Cotto some time to recover. So I'm not gonna try to act like Cotto showed a granite chin in this fight.
cotto was backing up in the last rounds, mosley didnt capitalize it wouldve taked 1 good shot to rock him back to bayamon.....he was able to move alot against mosley which upset mosleys rhythm since he likes a standing target....overall he fought good against mosley but his chin is still average....
Mosley didnt capitalize because he was getting rocked as well. He said he was buzzed quite a bit during the fight.
this is cotto's last 3 fights...gomez, quit vs. Margarito, jennings.

tyson is your favorite fighter but 45 of his wins were bums.so why u dissing cotto?
Wasnt weight problems and even if it was it just proves he was draining himself to have an advantage against much smaller guys.
wow u should get slaped for saying something so stupid
I totally agree.
But Cotto is a chinless quiter, who resort to low Blow people and taking knees when in danger"!!!!!!!!so taking a knee makes cotto a quiter? So i guess mayweather is a quiter cause he took a knee in a fight before.
Judah rocked him twice. I'll give him credit for the Margarito fight. We'll see if it lasts.
Eh, he stunned him a second time in the third round, but... it was nothing like how badly he was hurt in round 1.
I wouldn't say rocked, but...
He kind of reminds me of Marquez... he gets stunned often, but recovers very, very quickly.
Wasnt weight problems and even if it was it just proves he was draining himself to have an advantage against much smaller guys.
srry, wanna give me dat one mor gan? lmfao
he's obviously gonna get rocked now and again,
he fights the best, so it natural,
judah
margo
mosley
torres
when you fight the best, it tends to happen.
