To tell the truth, I used to hate MMA. But the company I work for seems to have one thing in common. They all seem to love MMA so I have been watching it to atleast keep up with the conversations. Anyway, I was thinking that I could probably like MMA if not for a couple things.
1. If somebody would please learn to throw a proper punch. I have never seen a fighter in MMA plant their feet and put their entire body into a punch. They are always wide swinging arm punches. Being a fan of the sweet science I cringe everytime I see punches in MMA.
2. Learn to take a punch. I am so tired of hearing how devastating the punch that ko'd Evans was. It was a wild arm punch that even an mediocre boxer would walk right through.
3. I hate when MMA guys think that since MMA gloves are only 4 oz. that fighters hit harder with them. Do the physics, F=MA, the more weight in the gloves, the more mass in the equation, although its very little. I'm not saying that they don't do less damage, I would even agree that they are more likely to break bones in your face or make you bleed, but they are not more likely to cause a knockout. A knockout is when your brain hits the inside of your skull, and the more force i.e. heavier gloves are more likely to cause that. I just have to say that, my buddy at work calls boxing "Pillow Fighting".
4. Although for the most part, MMA is boring to me, it is hard to have a war in 3 rounds. You can have an action packed fight, but could you imagine Ali vs. Frazier lasting 3 rounds? Would anybody still be talking about it?
I'm sure many of you disagree with me, but I just had to get that off my mind. I got in a big discussion at work the other day, and just about everyday, about boxing vs. MMA. And it has been getting to me because I am out numbered.
I disagree about the 4oz gloves thing: Small gloves = More devastating power. Put 4oz gloves on a guy like Tyson and let's see what happens.
It's less cushion to soften the blow. The 4oz gloves do enough to protect the knuckles and that is all you need to unleash hell from your punches with lower risk of injuring your hands (say without them on).
Look at sparring in boxing when they use puffy gloves like 16oz gloves. 16oz gloves aren't going to do damage like a pair of 8oz gloves. At least I don't think so. Maybe John Scully or someone else can give a Pro answer on this.
ALL BOXERS need to go back to 8oz gloves. Get rid of 10oz gloves. Plus, and you have to factor this in, with 4oz gloves it's harder to block a punch or a kick (since we are talking about MMA)...where with bigger gloves, you can use them as a shield like the way Winky Wright does.

That was only 1 punch of about 30. The punch that rocked Evans was a right cross that caught Evans offgaurd when he tried to shoot in. That wouldve knocked out alot of boxers. After that, he was trying to recover while Machida capitalized with an all out attack.

yeah, the thing is they can't put everything into their punches cause that would leave them open for takedowns.

actually the left hook that machida put evans down with was a really nice short left hook, even tho it looked like machida landed it on accident more than he intended to end the fight w/ that punch. every punch before that one was garbage tho (if i remember correctly)

calling boxing "pillow fighting" is prettey dumb. all I know is that mma fighters don't hit harder because their punching technique is crap.

a war is possible in three 5 minute rounds... but since clinching and hugging is a part of the game, its less likely to happen.
