Ricky Hatton's blown it, says Floyd Mayweather Jnr
icky Hatton blew a 25million-dollar payday when Manny Pacquiao beat him earlier this month, according to Floyd Mayweather Jnr.
Hatton was knocked out in round two and the prospects of a rematch with Mayweather disappeared before the British idol had regained consciousness.
Hatton was stopped by Mayweather in 10 volatile rounds in December 2007 and the Manchester boxer has made no secret of his desire to get sweet revenge.
"I was ready to fight Ricky one more time and give him another chance to beat me," said Mayweather.
"Ricky is an old-fashioned warrior and I was happy to fight him in either London or Manchester.
"I told him when I beat him the first time that we could possibly do it all again.
"The Pacquiao fight was a test - if he had won there would have been a big cheque for a fight against me. I was shocked by the Pacquiao loss and it would be cruel now to fight Ricky again."
Hatton is on holiday in Tenerife with his young son and his long-term partner and he is expected to announce when he returns that he will fight again.
Mayweather was in London on Thursday and Friday to promote his return to the ring in Las Vegas on July 18, when he meets Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez in a mismatch over 12 rounds.
"The plan was one fight and then a potential bigmoney fight against Hatton," added Mayweather, who will be taller, have longer reach and is naturally about one stone heavier than Marquez.
"Everybody knows how much I respect Ricky but now I will have to look for other options after Marquez.
"I wanted to fight Ricky in front of his fantastic fans because I believe that I've also got a lot of support here in Britain.
"Ricky needs to walk away now and give up on the boxing dream.

If floyds beat marquez even I will give him mad props..If he than beats pacqioua after marquez I wll even sa hes one of the best ever.. However, If he doesnt fight pacqioua after if he somehow beats marquez critics will stil say he was just a very good fighter.. He need both fights
I think it goes further than that, why come back to fight a couple of Lightweights, why isn't he seeking WW competitors, i think he's a very good fighter, but until he fights at least two of Mosley/Cotto/Williams/ i will not be able to put him up there with the ATG's
I can't believe Floyd fanboys still defending Floyd inspite wanting Floyd to rematch Hatton just in case Hatton beats Pac. Picking a rematch on Hatton over Mosley and Cotto? What a comeback!
You twisted his words... he didn't say he would retire afterwords... read the article, plus if he beat the P4P #1 fighter out there he would have put himself in the position where he deserves another shot...
A Wembley fight against Hatton would make sense... the attraction Hatton gets in the UK is big... the fight would sell big time and make lots of money, it makes sense.
Like I said, there was nothing about retiring in the article, you twisted his words... for all you know he could of planned to fight one of those 2 afterwords... I mean he might have not but there is chance that he would of.
If your going to post articles about it at least be fair and not twist things he said.
If he was really planning to fight Hatton again, which I don't think he was, then Floyd really is a cherry picking fraud.
His plan was to fight a lightweight, then fight a guy he decisively beat and always will instead of a much bigger fight against one of the welterweights he should be fighting? Whatever.

How long have you been watching boxing? You know nothing about the talent level Floyd has been fighting. I have been following Mayweather's career since it started, not just the last three years and I know for an absolute fact that if you compare the records and the quality of competition that Mayweather has fought in his career to that of Pacquaio's, there is no question that Mayweather's is better and any objective person who did that would come to the same conclusion.
I've been watching boxing longer than the last 3 years. You could have looked at some of my past posts before jumping the gun. Since you jumped the gun, I'll agree @ 130, 135 no one is complaining about Floyd's opposition. From 140 up its dropped. If you're as objective as you say you are you shouldn't have a problem admitting that Floyd is low risk high reward since he started getting the big money. Also if you're as objective as you say you are you'll admit that floyd's contradictions are embarassing. If youre also as objective as you say you are you wont deny pac's body of work being greater, and that pac is more a fighter that's looking to challenge himself than floyd is. if you dont agree that's fine, refer to previous polls.
dude if hatton wouldve beaten pac, he wouldve been top p4p, considering the fact that mayweather is gonna destroy marquez. After floyd wins, hatton wouldve been p4p, which earns him a rematch
hatton was already top 10 p4p according to ring mag. beating pac alone doesn't make hatton p4p #1. never!
if he beat pac and jmm, or beat mosley then I'd say he deserves a rematch.
but regardless of whether hatton deserves the rematch or not, WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYBODY WANNA SEE HATTON/PBF 2???? hatton just gets KTFO sooner in the rematch.
thats str8 bullshit floyd,bullshit..that wouldve been very cowardly..if he really said this..wheres the link

you mean the same casamayor that robbed santa cruz blind that david diaz beat?
you mean the edwin valero that has yet to even fight a gatekeeper?
you mean the campbell that jmm ducked at 135 lbs?
um.. nope. if hatton beat pac, he wouldn't be p4p #1, he'd probably get behind hops and above mosley, but that's as far as it goes. jmm is p4p #1 by default.
for hatton to earn a rematch against floyd, he'd have to beat pac and jmm imho.
if hatton beat mosley, then I'd say that would also earn him a rematch against floyd.
this is the only reason why floyd would make this fight. its an easy payday. floyd KOs hatton faster the 2nd go round.

Didn't Pacquaio fight two rematches recently against guys he ko'd: Erik Morales and Barrera instead of fighting more worthy opponents like Casamayor, Edwin Valero and Nate Campbell?

ive missed most of this thread, so i'll speak my peace and move on. if ricky would have beat manny, he would have been considered #1 p4p. Therefore, he wouldve earned himself a rematch against floyd. Duh!

And on top of that, its a big payday, and floyd wants to fight in the U.K. If someone said this already, im sorry!

Its funny how I NEVER seen the word retire in this story...haha...why ADD words that were NEVER mentioned? Come on now...:smashfrea
Thanks for pointing it out by the way, I didn't notice myself until you said so... :lol1:
He just added and then retire at the end in the title... :lol1:
The word "retire" wasn't in that article... he said he planned to beat JMM and then have a big money fight in the UK against Hatton if he beat Pacquiao... he didn't say what he would do after that or say he will retire... just like V. WEBB. JR said.
If Hatton had beat Pacquiao he wouldn't be P4P #1, but he would have probably earned a fight with Mayweather, even though it isn't a fight I am interested in.

Nah, Ricky would not have been #1, no way.

When I say underachieved i mean that with praise. Floyd has had a great career no question, but with his talent level i see no reason why he shouldnt be an atg top 10. if he truly wanted that i believe he could. the fact that he isn't trying for it is disappointing from a fan's perspective. Compare that now to Manny who isn't nearly as naturally talented or been in boxing as long, but i think it's fair to say that manny is trying to find his ceiling where as floyd isn't.

oh wow
floyd got talkative in england...THIS is an interesting revelation
he came back for two fights; one against a lightweight and another one against a guy he KOd
that was the hit list?!?!?!? say it aint so floyd :D

What about Joe Calzaghe? Roy was "shot", remember? Why would you fight a shot guy?
"Joe said..."
"Floyd said..."
Shit never ends.
I dunno, the Jones fight was always a bit meaningless to me, but to Joe it was a pretty decent payday, I guess? **** knows.

Where in the article does it say anything about Retiring after giving Ricky a Chance?
lol, thats what have been looking for in the article...all he said was he wanted one fight which was to dust his ring rust i guess, Then unto big money fight and i would have imagine if Hatton had beaten Paq the demand for a rematch would be big.
That's true, we'll see what happens. I'm optimistic that we'll get to see the hungry floyd again & try to achieve boxing immortality, but pardon me if i dont hold my breath for it.
That is a fair enough. I would not exactly call Floyd hungry, well he is hungry hungry for money. Money can be one hell of a motivating factor to a greedy person.
