It's basically a tune up for Floyd. The more this gets analyzed the more this is what's becoming clear. I think the problem lies in PBF claiming it's not a tune up. I think it's slightly more than a tuneup but not much.

Was that 'fight-night weight' stripped or with shoes, jewelry etc. and was it on the official scale or a bath-room weight? There's no rules for 'fight-night weight'. Maybe there should be, but there is not. Not that it means anything at all since fighters always blow up several lbs to a higher weight than the weigh in. The problem is if he naturally blows up to 145 when he's fighting at a lower weight, then he won't likely be blowing up the typical 10 lbs comfortably above 147. Welterweights occasionally walk around at 160 lbs or even above, it doesn't mean they should be fighting Pavlik or Kessler.

I don`t recall a top 10 P4P who is champion of just one weight class. Maybe it`s why Henry Armstrong is ATG #3 in most list it is because they are just too good that they surpass these weight classes. No one knows how PBF will actually fight after more than a year`s layoff. But surely, PBF has not experienced blood in the ring, and JMM is used to it and the hardships of being hit. I think it boils down to who wants it more, and JMM has the capacity to be victor. Unless he gets assimilated by the mafia, because he is supposed to lose. They should watch this fight very closely. No, generally speaking a P4P ranked fighter is champion of more than one weight class but ultimately there are limits and frequently a gradual progression(there are also factors like age, natural size, style that need to be considered.) However that doesn't mean you can just chuck him into any weight class you want and expect the same exact result from him. I don't mean to suggest it won't be competitive but the criticism stems from fans wanting to see a fight that is more competitive. To be fair, this can be viewed as a tuneup fight but that is the debate going on in this thread.

to be fair to PBF, hearns fought a significantly smaller man in duran & i haven't encountered ( yet ) any hate or criticism thrown at hearns by the boxing community for beating a smaller & older man... duran had already won a belt at light middle before he fought hearns and he later went on to win a belt at middleweight. as opposed to marquez who i doubt will ever win a fight above 140 in his career.

I was surprised when JMM beat casamayor and Juan Diaz. I don`t under-estimate a proven veteran, JMM. He has never been koed I think, only kd. These are two elite fighters, in the same way that I don`t under-estimate Pac, this will be a great, hard-fought fight. JMM has a very great resolve to fight Pac again. He will go all-out in this fight, and PBF may get nervous. Pacquiao has proven time and again that size doesn`t matter much. JMM may just prove a lot of people wrong. And he has been taking up weights and bodybuilding according to articles. this is a disadvantage because floyd will not have to get down in weight. So what`s the difference? At 147 it's absolutely nothing. Any top 5 WW would have better odds than Marquez has. That's what it boils down to. There's probably Jr. WW that are closer underdogs than JMM. But JMM is #2 best P4P. It means that he can literally fight the same way at nearly any weight class. JMM`s fighting weight is 147. So he has to prove that title he holds, and so far, as of date, PBF is below JMM P4P. PBF`s possible win will not only affect his legacy and P4P rating, but also his bargaining power with the Pac Team. One mistake with JMM, and he will be shunned from future mega-fights. A lot of people are just waiting for him to lose just to make him and his pa eat their words, he may even never fight Pacquiao because of this fear of losing. But not to JMM. He just put himself in a tight spot, and he will realize this too late. I can do nothing but shake my head.
