who's better? I've heard it argued that greb's era was tougher. If that's true he wins by a landslide. If it's not...well there are no videos so this is a tough question. Unless it isn't.
resume wise yes, but head to head i doubt it
even though he did hold a big size advantage in many of their fights he did beat ray once and gave him some tough moments, he had an ATG chin and while not a puncher he had great physical strength and determination, plus he was underrated skill wise, he was good at playing possum and setting traps/springing suprise attacks and he could roll with punches very well
I don't feel like you don't give Greb enough respect, I have read very one of his newspaper reports and studied him for years. Greb was truely one of the best ever fighter to ever lace on gloves, and there is no dout he was a better fighter than Lamotta in the ring and in legacy terms.
No disrepct, but I feel you should do your reserch on him and you will learn alot about him and have a better understaning of him, You should by the book Fearless Harry Greb , brand new out.
Brillant read.
God damnit he's not a ****ing welterweight. I don't care how old he was, he was ripped at middleweight he grew into it.
Well a lot of people myself included rate him as the best welterweight god ever put breath into, I personally rate him as the best MW too but that is slightly more questionable. As I have never seen Greb on film I will have to give the match up to SRR but ceratinly a fight i'd love to see.

Robinson regularly weighed around 155 lbs at middleweight.
There was not a notable difference in size when he fought at welterweight:
At middleweight (weighing 154):
Ray didn't become welterweight champ till he was 29. I think he was fully grown my friend.

Im going to play devils advocate here.....
But this was also a weight drained LaMotta who never again fought at middleweight.
True but LaMotta put up a great effort nonetheless. Sugar Ray also looked great in other fights of this period.
I would say the Robinson who fought LaMotta for the sixth time. He was 29 years old, moved well and unleashed combination after combination on a defenseless LaMotta in the later rounds of the fight.

It drives me crazy when people say Ray was at his best at welterweight. He was a total freak at welterweight with his height, power, speed, and ability. At middleweight he loses the massive height advantage and is therefore slightly less dominant but he's at his best at middleweight. You can't say a guy peaks before he's fully grown, and ray was fully grown fighting at 1 ****ing 60.

So what is the best middleweight version of Robinson than? The Fullmer fight where he ko'd him from the back foot? The last fight with LaMotta? I don't think the welterweight version would be big enough to contend with Greb, but thats just my opinion.

That was NOT a prime Robinson.

You could make the case that Greb was better than Robinson pound for pound, he had a great resume and beat several heavyweights. You could also say that Greb beats him head-to-head since Greb usually fought at around 168 lbs while Robinson's prime was at 147. Greb also presents problems for Robinson stylistically with his fast swarming attack, even if he was not quite as strong as LaMotta. It should not be forgotten however that great boxers such as Tunney, Loughran, Gibbons and O'Dowd gave many problems to Greb.
The big problem with rating Harry Greb is that there is no available film of him. It's tough to say how he could have done against other greats based on a couple of clips of him sparring and throwing punches as well as the newspaper reports that exist of his fights.
Greb is on pretty much every top ten PFP all time list ever. If you can read his record on boxrec without shitting yourself congratulations.
Did I mention he fought most of his career completely blind in one eye and half blind in the other?
Let me rephrase the question - three quarters blind harry greb vs sugar ray robinson.
that was an old past prime robinson who fought basilio, we are talking the best MW version of ray here (or so i assume)
no it wouldnt be a complete walkover, by all accounts greb was tough, had a good chin and threw alot of punches from different angles
ray however was a classy fighter with far superior skills and in his prime he had the legs to contend with those fast swarming guys
Tunney also had the legs to contend with fast swarming fighters and Greb beat him to a pulp the first time they fought. Tunney was also much bigger than Ray.
And you are sure of this because of the extensive video you have seen Greb fighting in, Right?
I would expect Sugar to win, but looking at Grebs resume and taking first hand reports of the day into consideration this is no walkover. If Basilio (a great fighter in his own right) could take Robinson to the brink, there is no reason to think Greb wouldn't be more than capable of doing the same.
That was NOT a prime Robinson.
So did LaMotta, and SRR beat him 3 times out of four, three times he was a welterweight fighting a middleweight (still won twice) and the final time when SRR was at 160 he KO'd LaMotta.
By all accounts Greb was a much better fighter than LaMotta.
robinson would box his ears off and win a points decision

I don't know about that. Greb had fantastic lateral movement. Pretty hard to box his ears off.
