I am a big fan of both. I truly believe these styles are really unappreciated and are truly boxing craftsmanship, but why are Hopkins biggest wins considered GREAT and people just dog Floyd's biggest wins or his future opponents. BHOP did great at middleweight throughout his career as Floyd did in several weight classes, against great competition that they should get a lot of credit for but lets compare their BIGGEST fights later in their career. Again they both had great fights early on as well.
BHOP
Trinidad-Was a great undefeated fighter who was naturally a smaller man. Hmmmm?
De La Hoya- The cash cow. Had to move up in weight to fight Hopkins at a catch weight. Way undersized compared to Hopkins.
Tarver- Hopkins moved up and it was a good win
Wright-Fought most of his career at 154. Only a couple fights at middleweight. Had to move up to 170 to fight Hopkins.
Calzaghe- Moved up to 175 to fight Hopkins from 168.
Pavlik- Middleweight champ had to move up to 170 to fight Hopkins.
May:
Gatti: Considered to be past it.
Judah: Coming off a loss, but very tough opponent
Baldomir: Considered less talented but many thought his size would be a big problem
De La Hoya: Floyd moved up to fight him
Hatton: Critiscized for fighting him at 147
Marquez: Getting KILLED by detractors for this fight because Marquez is too small.
Pacquiao(Possible) Will be same as above.
My main point is this: Why does Hopkins fighting Oscar, Calzaghe, Trinidad, Winky, and Pavlik elevate him and if Floyd fights someone smaller or considered past their prime the detractors go after him. I mean Winky, Oscar, Trinidad, Joe, and Pavlik all came up to fight him. Pavlik moved up 10 pounds to fight Bernard and people put Bernard on a pedestal for this win. I mean it wasn't all action, or a KO performance. He gave Pavlik a slow, methodical boxing lesson. Marquez is moving up probably about 8 pounds(he was going to come up to 140 anyways) and the hate on Floyd has never been greater.
Hopkins doesn't want to fight Chad Dawson and turned down Roy Jones but Floyd is hated on for not fighting certain guys.
I would like to see them both fight certain guys, but I am a big fan of both and take no credit from either of their accomplishments. I just want to make a point about the hate on Floyd compared to another great fighter who has done similar things that Floyd gets critiscized for.
Bernard was once asked would he rather have the legacy and belts, or the money and he flat out said the money. The money is so big today that everyone is going to take the fights that will pay them the most.
Past fighters would have done the same thing if they were getting paid like this!
I could make similar arguments for Floyds opposition. Hell Ricky Hatton won a belt at 147 but people say he picked on a smaller guy in ricky. Marquez called out floyd, etc etc etc
Trinidad was ALREADY a middleweight CHAMPION when bhop fought him. Bhop was the underdog, somewhere around 6-1. Bhop didn't use his size at all in this fight, he used superior technical skill, which is exactly why people say this was bernards greatest fight. Bhop did his job by UNIFYING all of the middleweight belts, including the Ring belt, by beating Tito. In fact, Hopkins was the first, and ONLY man to ever hold all of the belts at the same time.
Hopkins weighed in at 156. Oscar held is own until he got KO'd. I agree Oscar didn't look good his previous fight against Sturm, but so what, it's oscar. There isn't a single fighter in the world that would pass up the opportunity to fight him. Besides, Oscar challenged Bernard not the other way around, and Bernard had already cleared up the division so there really were no other bigger fights than Oscar.
And I'd like to point out Hopkins was 40 years old and again, an underdog, this time 4-1. Tarver was THE MAN at 175, coming off of wins over Roy Jones and Glen Johnson. And bhop schooled his ass.
Wright was a guy that no one wanted to fight and was ranked in the top 10 pound 4 pound. He didn't look great against Bernard , but his style would give anyone problems not named Paul Williams. The fight is what is though, a money fight.
Calzaghe had stated that he was already moving up to 175. This was his plan all along. Bhop just so happened to be the man at 175 at the right time.
And??? He also KTFO out of Jermaine Taylor, then beat Jermaine Taylor at 166 pounds, just 4 pounds away. Hopkins schooled him so badly it wouldn't have matted if it was at 154!!
In addition, prior to the hopkins fight, both Pavlik and his trainer made it perfectly clear they were going to move up in weight, because Kelly was having problems making 160 pounds. The plan was for them to go up in weight and leave the middleweight division. Obviously, after hopkins schooled his ass at age 43, they decided to stay at 160.
Again, Trinidad was ALREADY a middleweight. Shit, even Oscar was a middlweight before fighting hopkins.
Another thing, besides Winky, all these guys challenged bhop.
4 pounds.
Oscar went DOWN four pounds to fight Bernard (oscar fought Sturm at 160, fought Bernard at 156).
Trinidad Stayed the same weight (was already a cham at 160).
Hopkins is 44 years old and Chad Dawson cant even sell 1,000 tickets.
Bernard said he didn't want to fight Jones anymore because of this:

Really, is there a point anymore??? What does it prove, beating a washed up Jones??
Hopkins was on board to fight Jones, as long as Jones beat calzaghe or at least kept it competitive. Jones did neither and practically died of blood loss lol!
Floyd is hated for a million reasons.
yup. he turned himsel into a veggie because he didn't want to move up in weight. Notice in the RJJ/HOPkins interview he mentions and emphaizes "REASONABLE REASONABLE CATCH WEIGHT". He always wants the advantage. he knes RJJ was too big for him in the rematch and didn't want none. PERIOD.
quote from hopkins in ring mag:
"If they knew what I had to go through all those years to stay at middleweight and rack up those 20 defenses, I'd get a blue ribbon for that."
Just think about this statement, then look at that weak opposition he fought at middleweight and tell me this guy isn't overrated. He's still fighting blown up middles even at 175.
I know Hopkins is 44 but Floyd could be 50 and there would still be this hate. Pavlik did fight Taylor at 164 but that was because Taylor said he could no longer make weight at 160, but Pavlik was still Middleweight champ and planned to resume fighting at that weight. Trinidad was still smaller. Again, I'm not discredeting him, just making comparisons.
he's overated and get's a pass because he's old. truth is, he cherry picks opponents. the only time when he was the same size with a young opponent was JT, and we same him get beat twice.
the truth right there...hopkins is overrated...been fighting guys two and three divisions smaller his entire career...at 130 - 147 floyd's been fighting guys his size and bigger
People don't like them because they're boring and they cheat and get away with it. Mayweather uses his elbows as a weapon against his opponents, hopkins is ruthless at headbutting. Hopkins kind of has an excuse seeing how he is like 44 years old, Mayweather doesn't have an excuse in my opinion.
