I know what your saying JAB, but out of all the fighters you named, who do you think would beat him in the ring
I would say Charles, Louis, Ali, Monzon and Spinks would beat him. I'd give a fair shot to Robinson, Burley, Hagler, Greb, Tunney and Moore, but wouldn't be willing to bet on it. The others are to small with the exception of Fitzsimmons who I haven't seen fight, so I can't really give an opinion.
On a side note.....I would also pick Bob Foster to beat Roy, though I think Roy rank higher all time.
I see both points, i just sometimes feel that resume gets too much weight placed on it. Good chat fellas
Its tough to argue against Jones talent, the guy was a phenom. But without the names I can't justify ranking him so high. I would say he's somewhere between 25 and 35, but its arguable.
In no particular order, I would rank these fighters ahead of Roy.
Robinson
Armstrong
Greb
Langford
Pep
Charles
Moore
Louis
Ali
Ray Leonard
Benny Leonard
Gans
Walker
Burley
Ross
Tunney
Fitzsimmons
Hagler
Duran
Whitaker
Monzon
McLarnin
Arguello
Spinks
Wilde
Fukk no!!!!!!!!!!!
He had the skills, but not the resume. He is top 60-70 tho.
Whoever thinks he is top 20 is a damn idiot, period!!!!!!!!!!and those are the same people who rank floyd not even top 50 and floyd was dominant in his prime also and has never lost...add ot this, floyd was more skilled than roy and had the better fundamentals and much more polsihed, yet th ehatred he recieves for his persona makes people blind their judgment of him, when clearly floyd imo is the greater fighter when it comes to him and roy...but, they both fought pretty much the same competiton and both are considered the greatest of their eras...the hatred for floyd even though his skillset cannot ne denied ever is funny to me...
because roy was so dominant in his prime, that get shim top 20. it just goes to show me how young these posters are on this forum...roy is not top 20. he could have competed in any era just like floyd mayweather jr could have cometed in any era and they could both have been top fighters...that's a testament to their skillset...
He had the talent to be top 3, let alone top 20.
This is an assumption, not a fact that can be proved.
While i see the point of "accomplished fighters", but in the ring you all know that he would beat most if not all of these "accomplished fighters".
Again, this is another assumption. It doesn't matter anyways since there are many different fighters from varying weight classes.
And remember few of these fighters actually beat a fighter as good as roy, like duran who lost to most of the ATGs he fought. Jones on the other hand easily beat Toney and Hopkins.
Beating Toney and Hopkins is fantastic. But it pales in comparison to the accomplishments of many other fighters.
He had the talent to be top 3, let alone top 20.

You can make an argument either way for it, as the poll shows. A lot of it depends on how you weight different attributes when rating fighters on an all-time basis. The stronger weighting you give to resume the worse Roy does.

So, no real reason to vote Jones out of the top 20 p4p other than resume...
I better not see any pac in the top 30 mentions p4p, because all that dude has is resume
Resume speaks louder than "could have's, but didn't" when talking all time greatness.
Blame the era he fought in. Blame the quality of fighters he fought. But there are way more accomplished fighters in history than Jones.
That said, he certainly had the talent to be among the top 20. But without actually having the accomplishments compared to other all time greats who rank higher.....no dice.

Joe Calzaghe SMW
Chewi Torres LHW
Hagler at MW
I think the question is who can beat a prime Roy not a 40yr old one. Calzaghe would have been bitch slapped and Roy would have been criticized for fighting someone not anywhere near his level.
Skillwise most definitely. There will never be a fighter as athletically gifted as Roy in my lifetime. The man had insane speed and power behind that speed. SRL beating Roy? I can see ranking him higher ATG but Roy would demolish Ray in the ring. Speed is damn near even and Roy had much more power at 160 than Ray. I hear a lot of Roy only looked good against tomato cans but Ive never seen another fighter look that good and they all fight bums. Id be inclined to say Hagler wasnt big enough or fast enough to trouble Roy but Im not 100 on that. Michael Spinks wouldnt land a punch it would be a 12rd beating.
There is a very big difference between Zab/Agustus and roy. Roy between the man who is a top 3 MW of all time, and beat a p4p number 2 fighter in toney. Not to mention going up to HW and beating ruiz.
He went undefeated from 154-HW , Zab did nothing close. Bad arguement.
SRL/Hagler
i dont think so
Hopkins is a better Middle than Hagler, and we saw what happened to hopkins when roy fought him. SRL... even less of a chance than Hagler, considering Hagler bet him(Yes he won).
I dont think Holy at Cruiser was as good as holy as heavy, thats why he moved up to heavy. His body was made for heavy not cruiser, kind of like David Haye.
But even if they might beat him, thats 5 people that you think MIGHT have a chance. We would be hard pressed to find a fighter that would be favored against roy. Thats why looking at things based a resume is stupid.
Look at pac. Some of you are saying that he is already high up on the P4P ATG list, yet between 130-140 you can name alot of people that would be favored to beat him.
PFB by ud/ko,Kostya by ko, Shane Mosley by KO, ARchie, Pernel, JCC, and so on.Willie pep would make pac look like a little kid trying the speed bag for the first time, he just cant hit it....
