Floyd Mayweather Jr. may have picked Juan Manuel Marquez as an opponent for his comeback fight... but to say that JMM is a tune-up is utter ignorance.
It's true that by moving-up JMM gives Floyd Jr. all the advantages because JMM has not fought above 135lbs before. And now JMM is moving up in weight against a very skilled boxer in Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Juan Manuel Marquez is the world's number 2 pound for pound fighter, he did not get in that position for no reason. JMM will face the former number 1 pound for pound fighter, and by doing so he will risk his legacy for a big paycheck.
PBF will also risk his legacy... having to pick JMM. It is true that JMM called out Floyd Jr. after he defeated Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz.
But it's not as if Floyd Jr. does not have enough options.
It's former #1 P4P against current #2 P4P.
Tune-up fight? think again.
No-one is beating a prime Mayweather from 135-154 imo, But in this fight JMM has a chance because Mayweather has been out of the ring for 18 months but i still expect PBF to win.
Yeah, we shall see, I saw something the other day that makes me think people might be overplaying the 'mayweather will be rusty' thing, but we shall see.
Can someone please tell me how Marquez is going to beat Mayweather, if mayweather come in to the fight in his prime?
Does anybody here think Marquez is gonna be able Counterpunch mayweather?
Not diminishing marquez, he is one my fav fighters, but he's fighting at 143-144 against one of the fastest lead hands in the sport of boxing.
If he can't block a juan diaz lead, how does he block a mayweather lead?

JMM isnt a tune-up for no-one, Its insulting to even suggest that by anyone, Its either JMM is been underrated or Mayweather has been set a high standard on here, For me JMM isnt risking anything "legacy-wise" because people expect him to lose to Mayweather+ he would get payday handsomely.
Mayweather is suppose to win even though he has been out of boxing for 18 months, He's the one risking damaging he's own career/legacy by losing this fight to JMM.
I totally disagree when people keep saying this. I think theyre just trying to take credit away from Floyd. Name 1 guy who JMM beat that was better than Diaz & Casamayor? Those are 2 great fighters and likely will not ever be stopped by anyone else. To me its like Hatton vs Collazo or whateva. Everyone wants to act like you cant struggle anymore. These guys are good. You think JMM is going to blow those guys out like theyre some bums? Besides, people act like JMM was some legendary defensive guy. His face has been busted up in all his fights for years now. Add that to the fact that Casamayor is a Southpaw who JMM always gets hit clean by and Diaz is an in your face combo puncher, he was going to take some shots. He was never going to blow those guys out
Wft, Casamayor was hurt bad in his last fight with Katsidis prior to that, but landed one of the punches of the year to knock him out, he can deffo get stopped if he gets in the ring with another big puncher.
Juan Manuel Marquez can barley handle the punches at 135 from and old Casamayor and Diaz, who isnt exactly ATG in the skills department.
People look at the pacman fights too much, JMM isnt the same fighter anymore, I said that straight after the casamayor fight, and it was confirmed against Diaz, he is a true warrior and one of my favorite boxers.
But I aint gonna sit here and talk about JMM having a serious chance against Mayweather, unless mayweather has lost something.
How does that diminish JMM's accomplishment. I had Casa up by 2 before he got K.O'd. JMM won fair and square though
on my scorecards I have JMM up and Casa needing a KO to win the fight...
and JMM is nobody tune-up even though he is being forced to accept a fight were he is at a disadvantage...
JMM being JMM, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt. He is p4p # 2, arguably # 1. But lets be honest here, Floyd WAS/IS the p4p#1, and now he's back. The logic here is fundamental, even if the'yre comparable in skill...Floyd is just simply bigger and that adage that the great big man should beat the great smaller man should hold true in this case. JMM doesn't really hold any advantages on the intangibles either.
Stylistically? Floyd is all wrong for JMM. JMM shines when his opponent comes after him. i.e. Juan Diaz, Pac....Floyd doesnt need to, and can win selectively potshotting from range. That means it is JMM who has to press and that means it is JMM who will get "JMM"ed. JMM seems to be banking on the fact that Floyd maybe 2 years rusty....see, that seems to be the only factor going for JMM imo. Seeing Floyd, he looks fit as ever.
Ultimately, I think this is just smart matchmaking on Floyd's part. We all know why he came back, it is for the big money fight with Pac. They're gunning for a dominant win against JMM as ammo to Pac's wins against Hoya/Hatton. Floyd can say, "I easily beat the guy that many thought beat Pac" Thats how I see it....so yeh I think it is what it is : a "flashy, glossy" tuneup designed to make it look like it is not.
couldve woudlve shoudlve. Jmm won. Deal with it and stop diminishing his accomplishments.
Shut up you tart, he cant even see punches from Juan Diaz, you think he's gonna see a mayweather right hand?
Come on now.
If Marquez beats Floyd it has to be one of the all time great upsets.
If youv'e seen Marquez's last few fights, he's not the fighter he once was, his ability to see punches from mid-short distance is not good at all, Diaz was hitting him with all kinds of stuff, Casamayor would have beaten Marquez had he not decided to walk him down and walk into those shots. Another thing is, he is going to try and outbox floyd, and I would be shocked if he could win a chess match with mayweather.
Forget what Marquez did against Pacquaio, his last two fights at 135 could have gone the other way and if the guys at 135 can hurt him, a 147 pounder like Mayweather can really hurt him.

They mentioned JMM was no tune-up on Friday Night Fights.
and yet most posters here often called the PBF-JMM as a tune-up fight for Floyd. It's kind of irritating.
So there's nothing to gain for Floyd in that fight if he should win?
To many casual fans here.
