Alright Marquez is a great fighter, handles adversity pretty damn well, smart fighter, great counter puncher but really he gets too much credit for his close fights with Pacquiao.
Ok lets look at this, other then his close fights with Pacquiao he has KOed Casamayor who was on the verge of loosing to Katsidas prior and KOed Juan Diaz who was schooled by the veteran in Campbel and seriously does not know how to handle adversity. Lets not forget Marquez had trouble with both of those bigger fighters prior to his KO's. Emmanuel Steward even said Marquez doesnt look good at that weight class after Diaz was pounding him in the corner.
Marquez looses to Chris John in Indonesia which people will say it was a hometown gift for John. Marquez never redeemed or asked for that rematch.
Marquez NEVER stepped in the ring with the great Erik Morales not once and finally fought Barrera when Marco had been in wars with Pacquiao and Morales. Lets not forget that win over Barrera wasnt even decisive. Marco knocked him down.
Now Marquez is trying to prove he is the P4P best by calling out Mayweather and his wish just came true. Seriously, Marquez had good wins at lightweight but not dominate ones, now he's moving up to fight Mayweather.
Marquez is a good fighter but seriously, look at what he has been through. Hiding in the woods while Pac, MAB, and EM have there wars then finally comes out to make a name for himself.
I just think people give Marquez TOO much credit especially with his close fights with Pacquiao. Everytime Pac beats his opponents people consider Marquez to do the same which I doubt he pummels DLH or even KO's Hatton.
Your opinions and I know the Marquez huggers are gonna be pissed but its the damn truth, Marquez gets too much credit for nothing.
honestly i think marquez was a late bloomer in the boxing game.....
to me he is more tenqnical fighter than barrera and morales..... and trust me am a big morales fan...
marquez is the best counter/tecqnical fighter out right now... and yes am 1 of those that think marquez did enuff to win that 2nd fight
marquez just doin what he can while he can... he is 36 we all know that...
goin in with mayweather.... if quite hard 4 me 2 see marquez go into
yeah
Morales ducked Marquez not the other way around
But I agree with the TS that no one can really make a legitamite argument for Marquez being number one at this point, but I think that's because Pacquiao, in my mind, clearly beat him in their second fight.
i think marquez priced himself out of the morales fight
listen to this man.
ES TODO CARNAL
Ah thanks.
I think Juan understands better then any of us. That in order to make one last stand. Something to direct interest, for the few years left in his carrier. He has to do something as drastic, as go up another weight class and call out another Elite. Not title holder David Diaz, not a Dehydrated Part time Boxer Oscar, and not a one dimensional boxer Ricky Hatton. He has to call out, Floyd. Look he took on Manny and lost by split decision. That eats you up inside. He fought a masterful counter puncher, and beat him in his own game. But he is also past his prime. He took on a young and hunger LW champion, a former 3 time world champion. While respectable showings, they do not guarantee big pay checks, sufficient credentials.
And he understands better then any of us, who he called out, what he is up against, and what the stakes are. Victory…no just an over all well performance will be enough to draw the attention of the masses, and the media.
Otherwise, I ask you this. What would you do if you where in Juans shoes? Sometimes you just have to take that kind of risk. B-Hop took on Trinidad, Mosley took on Margarito. Juan will take on, Floyd for the same reasons.
I like JMM as a fighter. Has very good overall skills. But besides the pacquiao fight, i think that his biggest fights are the casamayor and juan diaz. Casamayor got a gift decision in the santa cruz fight, and barely beat katsidis. While diaz also lost to campbell. And both fights were very close as well. But he is still definitely should be in the 5.
he was more of a victim on the decisions of nacho rather than the sport ahahahaha :lol1:
Yeah you can say that as well. However because we don’t have an in-depth look of the life Juan Manuel (just Count Down’s and 24/7’s). We can really lay a harsh judgment.
I can assure you that there are many hungry contenders, and it’s a dream to just make it into the spot light and gain a championship belt. But the in road of boxing you face more then just the opponent. The boxing politics, ring circus, promotional promises etc…
Point is, we simply cant take what the mass media spoon feeds us. Try to look into, who this sport is really managed, and you find out that its riddled with vast complexities.

That girl has NO ASS, shame on you for that sig bro.
Good post, it made a lot of good points. I think his last 2 wins were somewhat impressive though. Cassamayor is upper tier and has only lost to very good fighters. Diaz was only a one loss fighter although he was schooled by Campbell.
Actually Juan is a victim of the Sport. When I say victim, is boxing in general did not realize how good he was until his first match with Manny.
If the Sport would have caught on earlier on, his skills would have gradually increased with the exposure of higher ranking contenders. Instead he a late bloomer, despite his age is able to compete in the Elite level. I want to see Manny box as good as he does by the time he is 36.

morales didnt duck marquez, marquez asked too much money when erik wanted him...not to say marquez outpriced himself though, nacjo was just a delusional promoter...

eh. lets not go overboard with the JMM is overrated stuff. I dont think hes as good as Morales OR Barrera overall, but thats hardly an insult.
he has his pros and cons just like any other fighter. even with his flaws, he is a brilliant technician and its a real treat to watch his fights.
and going up two weight classes to fight Floyd Mayweather? wow! if he can beat Mayweather, he gains a huge amount of respect from me(assuming Mayweather doesnt look awful)

This is spot on
I think you are kind of right about the last 2 fights, the way he won was impressive but how he won really does not give me a lot of confidence in him going into this fight.
That said I still consider him great but I see your point. Although I think you are being a little harsh on JMM.

I've heard that it was Morales who ducked Marquez and that he has always had trouble landing big fights.
