My vote is for De La Hoya from after the Trinidad fight on. In the 90's he was doing incredible busting up everyone he fought, even though most of his title wins were against past their prime old champions. Regardless of who you thought won the Trinidad fight by that time he was a celebrity, all girls thought he was hot and he even had a singing career, I'm talking Ricky Martin type stuff.
After that he seemed to care more about his celebrity status and pretty face than to win his biggest fights. Think about it all the opportunities he had to beat a top oponent in their prime he failed. All his biggest fights he lost Trinidad(even if you thought he won he lost the judges decision), Mosleyx2, Hopkins, Mayweather, Pacquaio, and I thought he got a gift against Strum. I think he was what Mayweather would call a front runner, he fights hard for the first six rounds then continues to fade down the stretch. I'm sure alot of you disagree with me on this. But who is your vote for most overated.
not entirely off the subject but i wouldnt put Calzaghe on my overrated list, only because he did pull out a win against Hopkins and Hopkins showed us against Pavlik that he wasn't too old. Plus his little slaps managed to end Lacy's career, turn the tide on Kessler (who is now top dog in a tough division), and not only put an ass whooping on Roy Jones but cutting him in the process.
maybe he fought two legends a little late in their careers, but he's no spring chicken himself.
and if he decides to return for a final fight with Dawson i would put my money on him.
Overrated for reasons of their own
Hatton -especially after moving up to welterweight
Mayweather- claiming to be as great as sugar ray robinson, yet never having a tough fight at welterweight wear he claims to be king
Pavlik- psych (thats my boy) lol.... but if he doesnt knock Mora out cold, Abraham is looking scary.
Oscar - fought the best, and also lost most of the time.
Pacquiao vs any legit WW @ 147. - at what point do you realize that some guys are just bigger than others
I shouldn't say roy jones jr. but I saw an old boxing magazine from the 90's and one writer almost put him to outbeat ray robinson, now that is rating him to high.
I think Hatton was. He really just ruled in one division and even if he won a belt at 147, he didn't look very impressive. I was always surprised to find him in anyone's top 10 list. He was always outside mine, but I moved him to 10th, I think, after Calzaghe retired.
Yeah your right he had talent but I hear to many people say he was amazing and a GREAT fighter which gets thrown around to much, and I think that he gets that credit because he is a celebrity. He is not the only one to get more credit than necessary becuase celebrity.
I dont think Oscar is overrated. the real boxing fans, anaylists, and writers no what kind of fighter he is. A very good fighter who seemed to come up short in his biggest fights.
To me overrated is thrown around to much. For the most part this board if the posters arent being bias and the boxing media usually has a fighter figured out for what he is .
true p4p list
1.Paul Williams- hasn't ducked anyone. He was the first to beat Margarito when he was considered a threat. And now people say he doesn't have a big name on his resume'. Aren't all the names he needs hiding behind the money? Has the ability to legitimately face all from 147-160lbs.
2.Juan Manuel Marquez- besides aforementioned, he also doesn't own a duck. A win over Mayweather puts him above Paul.
3.Chad Dawson-he is also a member of the duckless, but also a victim to weak division. But also truely the reason Calzaghe is retired.
4.Vic Darchinyan- after only lost by ko to Donaire, he has made adjustments and become a complete terror for any style he has faced since. Also happens to be calling for Manny Pacqauio. NO DUCKS! PLUS HAS ILL INTENTIONS EVERY TIME STEPS IN RING.
5.Winky Wright- Its hard to throw him too far down on the list after only really being beaten by the guy who's #1. He is tough to beat for everybody in 154-160 except..plus he ducked at a time when he was on top not en route to.
6. Shane Mosley- I don't see a loss since his second bout with Wright. Cotto was a beaten fighter, when the fight that close its about what man has imposed thier will. We saw Cotto fighting backwards for the first time. Needless to say he goes to ko the man who ko'd Cotto. But doesn't want Paul.
7.Bernard Hopkins- He was up there but due to him ducking Wright at 160 but fighting him a year later at 170lbs. He doesnt go beyond Wright on this list. Has done this for all of his so called career defining wins.
8.Floyd Mayweather- The most talented but least tested. He has hand picked particular champions in the weight classes he has traveled through. He doesn't want Winky, Margarito, or Cotto but calls for Mosley but now after things have blown over wants no part of Shane Mosley but rather wants to disadvange JMM and use his P4P ranking as a claim for him to be top dog.
9.Manny Pacquaio- He continues to surprise us all with his power, but has yet to show an ability to win against defensive fighter. The first fight with JMM when despite being down 3 times in the first round he was able to fight to a draw.
10.Miguel Cotto- The next Shane Mosley in terms of going on a streak. He is tough as nails and indeed will continue where he left off with Mosley. So what he lost to the plaster master.
When is he gonna fights somebody worth a damn? Seriously he has 40 fights and no one on his resume. Just cause he is the son of a legend he gets hyped.
