He has acomplished some good boxing things regardless if you like him or not, yet he still hasnt won over the American public.
I got the impression he was kind of jealous fighting hatton and oscar, because they both had big fan bases which he didnt have.
Why do you think Mayweathers never been popular with the american public? Is it his style? Discuss.
So what do you call Tyson?
Tyson was a "good" guy at first. I remember how respectful Tyson was and how he called himself a student of the game and showed so much humility.
Then he lost Rooney, the last connection to the old trainers and he went crazy and people started hating him outside of NYC. I remember I cheered for Holyfield and not Tyson....
American Public
There aren't really ANY fighters, floyd included who are currently on the radar of the general American public. Boxing as a whole is not really what it was in the past so the public doesn't get familiar with great fighters. ODLH is really the last guy everyone knows about, and it would take another great, charismatic, likeable and exciting fighter to bring back the interest of the American public. Boxing is just not embraced like that anymore.
Floyd is barely known to the average non boxing fan, and his biggest break in the ODLH fight did garner some national mainstream attention but it probably turned more people off of boxing because it was boring as ****.
He makes a shit load of money. Who cares if people like him?
Most people on here have done a good job answering the thread already.
HE CARES
He just fronts and acts like he doesnt
You dont think it bothers him that Oscar makes him look like a welfare case?
He goes around like a fool "making it rain".
He has no class.
So he play the bad boy because he is an attention whore
Floyd is going to end up broke and homeless
And guess what reed.......
NO ONE can stop talking about his return...he has boxing in a choke hold...you cant argue that.
You arent getting the point Don
WE have this illusion that Floyd will come back and fight tough competion
like the mosleys the cottos the Williams or Bertos
WE want to see him put his money where his mouth is
in other words quit talking all this shit and go out and prove it
but he wont
he is very entertaining person but that doesnt make him popular
One thing you have right is that he is boxing bad boy and that is one thing missing.
They LOVE to HATE him.
Thats why hes popular....
That Golden Boy shit has already been done...
Why do you think Shane is scandering the earth looking for a big pay day....NO PERSONALITY.
As Horus would say. "He's notorious, not popular"
You cant be popular if people hate u.
So what do you call Tyson?
Tyson was an animal. People loved his killer instinct whether he was a bad guy or not. He's the most influential thing to happen to boxing since Ali.
So what do you call Tyson?
And Cowboys and Robbers :-)
Generally, America likes the Underdog and those that challenge Authority/go against the system.
Who knows now; things change.
Because like it or not in America they love the "good guy". That's why they loved Forman so much, Joe Lewis, Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya.
The public loves to embrace a fighter who embraces the people and not himself.
The funny thing is when during the 24/7 episode of him with 50 cents in his house and he was walking around with gaudy jewelry and 10's of thousands of dollars in cash in his pocket, he looked like an idiot because DLH, who has 100X more money than he does, was walking around with no jewelry and a nice simple classy watch.
Floyd has pushed the general public away with his lack of class. Great fighter, just rediculous ego attatched to it.
Bingo. Hit the nail on the head!

You sound like an idiot.
So the nation is waiting for him to come back? Half the people who saw De La Hoya-Mayweather never wanted to see boxing again, much less pay for it.
That was 2 years ago kid.
And hes been p4p number 1 plenty of years.
Who gives a shit they know him now....
Most casual fans don't even pay attention to him to even think about him, much less waste time "hating" on him.
Most, still refer to him as "the little Black guy DLH fought".

The general public has already forgotten about Mayweather. A 30 second commercial didn't do anything to change that.

i didn't like PBF prior to the RH match, thought he was too disrespectful etc. but after there fight we stayed behind to see what was said and Floyd was very gracious about his win and gave credit to RH. since that day on, even though he's not boxed, he's gone up in my estimations and i'm glad to see him return

floyd hasn't been able to capture the American imagination because he doesn't embody the american dream.
floyd went from rags to riches, but let the riches change him.
also, floyd is never the underdog and most people (americans included) love the underdog.
its simple floyd acts like a bicth who the hell would like a man acting like a bicth. Example look at the end of the Hattan fight floyd gets on his drama win pose with his hands up in the air and it looks so fake as hell acting like he beat Kingkong or something
They LOVE to HATE him.

Most of the nation didn't even know who he was until 07.
How is it that people come to love to hate someone they aren't even aware of?
Close this bullshit thread.
Your arguing two very different things and you don't even realize it. No one is saying that mayweather is who he is all the time as we see him acting up on camera. The question was, why hasn't he been embraced by the American public...
Like a sugar ray or DLH, the reason was given and you didn't want to accept it. It's not a question as to how much money he makes, or how good he is, we know he's a great fighter and very rich (which I never understood why the fans take such pride in that since they will never see one dime of it)
Floyd had the opportunity to become the next DLH as far as mass appeal and he doens't have it. He can't pack stadiums in by himslef the way Leonard, Tyson and DLH did in their prime, sorry but he can't.
Part of the reason for that is he's just not a charismatic person, cocky....YES but he doens't have that appeal that people are drawn to.

He says this about every fighter after he'd faced them (maybe except Zab Judah)
It doesn't take away from Floyd's overall personality in the public. People don't buy PPVs from him saying "Well, after fights, he's a nice guy"
Is Floyd Mayweather the only fighter you follow by any chance?
He did it on purpose......
For his part, Mayweather willingly takes on the villain role—as he puts it, "In this fight, there can't be two good guys. That's bullshit. So I chose to be the bad guy. fukk it." (In another clip, the puckish fighter looks into the camera and says, "Mom, I'm sorry that I use bad language, I feel so bad … but I'm gonna **** him up!")
Floyd is the smartest mutherfukka around...the dude knows how to sell fights.
lol, he knows how to sell fights so well, he needed the help of an aged superstar (Gatti) of the sport to help him get off his feet. Then, he goes to the face of the sport begging to be put onto superstar status.
So, outside of the DLH and Hatton fights,
how well did he do in terms of PPVs and money?
Why did he need to chase down DLH in the first place?
If he knows how to sell a fight, why is he telling other fighters to get thier PPVs up?
