JESSE BRINKLEY CALLS OUT JERMAIN TAYLOR
Super middleweight contender Jesse Brinkley has added former world champion Jermain Taylor to his “hit list” for a showdown this year.
Taylor is coming off a very hard fought battle against WBC Super Middleweight Champion Carl Froch this past Saturday, a fight he was winning on the scorecards before being stopped with just seconds left to go in the final round.
This past Valentines Day, Brinkley brutally hammered away at his long time local rival Joey Gilbert for twelve rounds, pitching a near shutout towards a unanimous decision victory in front of a packed house of 7,000 fans at the Reno Events Center .
Speaking after a morning run, Brinkley discussed a possible fight with the former middleweight champion, “Jermain is amongst the very best fighters out there. He was seconds away from beating Froch on Saturday night, he beat Hopkins twice, had the draw with Winky, beat Cory Spinks and Kassim Ouma. His only other losses were to Pavlik.”
“At this point in my career I want to test myself against the very best in the division and he certainly qualifies. I need to find out for myself if I truly belong at the elite level. Jermain’s a class act and it would be an honor to fight him.”
About a location for a fight with Taylor , Brinkley stated, “If he wants to fight in Little Rock, no problem, just tell me what time. I’ll fight him anytime and anywhere.”
Winning his last six in a row, the 32 year old Brinkley has improved his record to 33-5-0 with 22 knockouts. The 30 year old Taylor, a bronze medalist at the 2000 Olympics, boasts a record of 28-3-1 with 17 knockouts.
Brinkley is co-promoted by Reno , Nevada based “Let’s Get It On” Promotions and TKO BOXING Promotions of Las Vegas.
At least he was somewhat classy about it.
But you think he'd call out Robin Reid, Alfonso Gomez, Joey Spina, or Sergio Mora... time to avenge some of those losses! Although I'm not sure he could make it down to WW or wherever it is Gomez is fighting now. :boxing:
Taylor needs a ready-made KO victim... and this guy is offering himself on a silver platter.
I agree w/HeartAttack.
Taylor is 1-3 in his last four fights, being KO'd twice.
Has Taylor fallen far enough to take a legitimate tune-up fight? I think he deserves a relatively soft touch at this point and it could be just what the doctor ordered in terms of getting his confidence and swagger back on track.
Cotto fought Gomez, De la Hoya fought Forbes, and Calzaghe fought Manfredo in tune-up fights.
Forrest LOST his belt to Mora for chrissakes and Pavlik is fighting him soon.
So WTF is to keep Taylor from fighting Brinkley? I think fans' expectations have always been so high for Taylor that everyone wants to see him against the best 100% of the time without taking time to consider what a normal string of fights for most top boxers looks like. It guarantee you that normal is NOT:
Bunema
Marquez
Joppy
Edouard
Hopkins
Hopkins
Wright
Ouma
Spinks
Pavlik
Pavlik
Lacy
Froch
Brinkley is a legitmate tune-up fight. He's got some name recognition and is durable enough to offer Taylor with some OK ring time while presenting limited risk.
Am I the only who likes this fight for both guys? Brinkley needs to at least try to acomplish something before his career is over, and Taylor needs a fighter like Brinkley (an opponent that boxing fans know of, who is of relativley little risk) to get himself going again, confidence and career momentum. The way called him out was classy, even though Taylor was KO'd last week. It actually helps Jermain, because now we are talking about him winning or what he can do to this guy and not anout getting laid out in the 12th round by Froch
JT needs o taste victory be it against this guy or the next is as good as any. The fact that JT ahsn't been able to finish anyone off in a few years lums hard in his mind and he needs a win by crushing KO. He has fought a lot of tough fights in a row and needs a down time fight to get hi swagger back in the ring. I think it could be just what the doctor ordered. JT beats this guy and wins by KO maybe Froch is there for a rematch maybe Fr4och gets KTFO by Kessler and JT takes a fight with Green or Bute or someone else for a big money Championship fight....Lefty
there u go ...thats the clear plan for jt but he NEEDS to work with his stamina that is his biggest flaw :boxing:

I know Taylor is slipping but does he really have to settle for the Brinkleys of the world now? even for tuneups or comeback fights.
the way he looked at the end of the fight....def..yeahhh :boxing:
Its not that classy calling out someone who just got kayoed.
The way he did it was classy enough... but the fact that he is calling out someone who just got KO'd reeks of desparation.
didn't see that coming..................................
why the **** do you think I posted it?
Couldn't tell... your setup could use a little work. :footinmou
Brinkley probably appeals to Taylor's brain trusts because he is an opponent type fighter. There is no danger in fighting a guy like Brinkley so why not.
