I guess if they were done on the night, it'd cause problems for the sanctioning bodies because they'd have to shake up any titles on the line and reorganise any stipulations based on both fighters making weight.
I mean, if a fighter couldn't make the weight on the night, wouldn't people start worrying about the fight being cancelled at the last minute or something? 24 hours allows more time to get things back together.
It was definitely in the eighties. Shortly after the Mancini vs. Doo Ku Kim bout.
Spot on Abos. The primetime disaster between Mancini and Kim ultimately led to 2 major changes in boxing.
One of the reasons for Kim's unfortunate death was believed to be dehydration. So to prevent dehydrated fighters getting in the ring the weigh-in was moved back.
A second reason was the lenght of the contest. Had the fight been 12 rounds Kim would possibly still be around us today. His death let to the abolishment of 15 round championship fights.
To protect the fighters. It's been shown that the majority of serious brain damage in boxing occurs when fighters are dehydrated. The theory is that if the weigh in is a day before the fight, it will allow the fighter to rehydrate.
Obviously this rule change has allowed for some fighters to fight in weight classes they probably otherwise couldn't, but nonetheless it was done to save lives.
One would think that if a fighter were fighting in his correct weight class, he would not have to dehydrate himself.
Possibilties
1. Weigh ins the day the fight happens= dead people
2. Weigh ins like now = people being 15pounds too heavy
3. Weigh ins right before the fight =show doesn't go off,cuz 1 too heavy
2. is best, but still sucks
Take Margarito and Paul Williams for example, if Margarito was 147 fight night against Cotto, you'd think Margarito will make it the 12? Hell No, same goes for Paul
Then it would mean that they would HAVE to fight at thier correct weight class. This is the way it "should be"
Because people fighting in divisions they don't belong in, will get seriously hurt.
Well if u make the weight the day of the fight, doesnt that mean u belong in that weight-class? :dunno:
