Salvador Sanchez would of beaten Duran and Arguello at a catch weight. He was that good.
Arguello would not have coped with Sanchez's lateral movement and in and out accurate counter punching, and he had an iron chin to take what ever shots he did get caught with.
Duran would of been more tricky, because Duran in his prime put you under more pressure than most fighters ive ever seen. However guys like Nelson/Gomez put pressure on Sanchez and had sporadic success, but both ended up looking the worst for wear, because Sanchez was such a good counter puncher, and he did not get flustered under pressure. De Jesus was an excellent fighter, but De Jesus showed that Duran can be countered effectively. I realize Duran was a better fighter after the 1st De Jesus fight, but i feel Sanchez was a better fighter than De Jesus.
Can see it either way, but personally i think Sanchez was better than both of them.
Roy Jones thinks Sanchez is the most skilled fighter ever.
Skille-WTF??
Skilled my balls, Gomez was hitting him at will. He was just like any other mexican who could take punches to the face and was a great counter attacker. I would have liked to see a rematch between him and Nelson. He was like 23 years old when he died so he would grow up to 130 and beat Arguello in a tough fight, but Duran would KO him.
Sounds like the Hater post, of the day! YEAH!
Thompson did get finished in the middle rounds, and I think Duran took out Kobayashi around the 7th. but for the most part, at lightweight it was late or early.
you might be on to something though. generally, the second fighters started feeling Durans power, they ran for their life. which would help them survive, but they almost never win rounds.
Sanchez was a very cool fighter, very level headed. but that wouldnt always work for him. Duran was the type of fighter to fill in those gaps of inactivity, and was able to do it so effectively that usually his opponent ended up expending more energy than him.
Sanchez's chin is solid, and his defense was very good. I dont see Duran knocking him out. and I can see Sanchez landing some good shots on Duran too. but Duran would put too much punishment on Sanchez in most of the rounds for Sanchez to win too many rounds. and I can see Sanchez getting hurt by right hands occasionally.
It would have been a clinic in infighting though, great stuff.
Yep agree most of that. Fight deffo could go either way. A side note i cant remember seeing a fighter put as much pressure on as Duran did against Ortiz and not get tired. Then again ive rarely seen a fighter who can stay so cool under pressure like Sanchez, and still counter punch effectively. I might be way off here, but last guy i saw do this effectively was Randall against Chavez 1.

agreed 100%
Fenech was knocked down more than a couple of times against Nelson. The Cowdell KO was devastating but Nelson didn't usually take out his opponents with single punches like that.
Yeah but does anyone see Gomez, Nelson and Lopez being able to knock fighters out consistently even at LW?
In my opinion Gomez's power wasn't the same even at featherweight, not to mention super feather where he couldn't do anything to Lockridge and Layne.
Some Duran KO's:
Not saying that these fighters are Salvador Sanchez but the punching power of a prime Duran is evident.
Well that is precisely why i dont see him knocking Sanchez out. Not only did Sanchez have a good chin he had excellent footwork. Most the people that bum rushed him got the shit countered out of them.
He took out most of his opponents that actually stood and traded with him in the middle rounds.
Hector Thompson actually tried to force the fight against Duran:

Yes Duran and Whitaker are two of the best inside fighters ive ever seen. Dont you think though that Sanchez was excellent at executing and sticking to his game plan? I mean the way he did not get overexcited about how easy he was hitting Lopez, and he just kept pecking away in and out when he could of stepped in and put more pressure on looking for the KO. Im thinking that patience and his coolness under pressure (Nelson/Gomez)with his counter punching would of given him a great chance. Not to mention his excellent footwork. Jeff Fenech/Pat Cowdell would disagree.
Duran was no Edwin Rosario. I dont see him knocking Sanchez out.

If you are 154lbs or 160lbs and you have stepped up in weight from LW its not against the law to be able to knocked someone over.

Hector Thompson actually tried to force the fight against Duran:
Ive seen this fight.
I dont think Duran would have knocked him out. people seem to think of Duran as a merciless destroyer, but he was very methodical, and it generally took him a while to break his opponent.
maybe Im forgetting some guys, but generally, Duran at lightweight either finished you early or took care of you late. I dont remember many people getting finished in the midrounds. it was either championship rounds, or the first two.
all the same, Duran could have taken care of Sal(by decision, imo). Duran was particularly good at fighting stationary counter punchers, because he would bait them with his left, and when they tried to counter it he would slam them with the right or get inside, and there are very few fighters around Duran's weight that could have even put up a fight against him on the inside.

Hector Thompson actually tried to force the fight against Duran:
They were terrific punchers but as featherweights/super bantams. Gomez's power never moved up with him to featherweight, Nelson was more of a strong fighter than a knockout puncher, Lopez was a great puncher but also very limited.
Duran was a lightweight and was hurting people at light middleweight / middleweight.
Jeff Fenech/Pat Cowdell would disagree.

I kind of have mixed feelings about how Sanchez's career would have gone on had he not died.
On one hand, the guy was still very young. what was he, 23? and look at the variety of fighters he fought. that kind of experience would have made him even more amazing as he progressed as a fighter.
but on the other, I kind of suspect he would have burned out quickly, and had a short career. just look at his 1980. Danny Lopez x2, Ruben Castillo, Pat Ford, and JuanLaPorte all in one year, at the age of 21. thats one of the most loaded years Ive ever seen for a fighter. and that was over 70 rounds of high level boxing too! I know he started to slow down before he died, but it might have been too late.
Ill tell you what though...Sal has to be one of the best late round fighters ever. could start awfully slow, but he got amazingly better in the championship rounds.
it would have killed him to have to fight a 12 rounder, although he could probably adjust his style to a degree
Great post.
I can see what your saying its a tough schedule for anyone.
Yeah against Castillo and La Porte he started slow, but once he got moving it was like he found another gear.
I noticed though that he did look uncomfortable in the Gomez fight when his back was on the ropes, but i mean i think back to the second Lopez fight and Lopez put more pressure on in the second fight, but Gomez,Nelson,Lopez all ended up taking beatings.
Less so Nelson.
Danny Lopez does not hit hard?
Azumah Nelson ?
Wilfredo Gomez?
They hit hard enough to let me know the guy would of been able to share a ring with Duran and not get KTFO. Sanchez has been hit bang on chin and not moved.I dont think Duran would have knocked him out. people seem to think of Duran as a merciless destroyer, but he was very methodical, and it generally took him a while to break his opponent.

He had an iron jaw against featherweights/super bantamweights.
Sanchez never fought anybody with the power of a prime Roberto Duran.

i doubt he would have beaten DURAN. duran would be the naturally larger man, not to mention duran had very good counter punching and defense. he might be able to beat ALEXIS, but not duran.
I love Sanchez, but he wasnt flawless either. he had a pretty rough fight with Pat Ford and Cowdell also gave him all he could handle.
not to mention that had the fight been 12 rounds, Azumah Nelson might have won.
Im not a Sal Sanchez expert, but maybe he had off and on nights. because it seems weird he struggled with Ford and Cowdell, but was almost flawless against Wilfredo Gomez and Danny Lopez.
theres no shame in having a close fight with Azumah Nelson, even if Nelson took the fight on late notice. Nelson had an unstoppable spirit in his prime.
Yeah thats true.
Would of been interesting to see how Duran coped with Sanchez movement, because Duran would of been cut to ribbins by Sanchez counter punching, if he rushed in the way he did against Vilomar Fernandez,De Jesus,Ortiz. I mean its not like Nelson did not pay a price for walking in Sanchez door. His face paid the same price Lopez 1,Nelson and Gomez
I dont know how you could give him little chance. The guy had an iron jaw, and beat great fighters like Nelson,Gomez and really good fighters like La Porte,Ruben Castillo,Danny Lopez. The guy already had a very good resume.
I know Duran improved after the first fight i stated that, but ive seen enough of a prime Duran from Ernesto Marcel/Hiroshi Kobayashi throught to Carlos Palomino/Leonard etc, and past Leonard to struggling with Nino Gonzalez etc to form my OWN opinion of how i believe the fight would of gone.

I give him little chance against Duran. Hard to say because he may have gone onto become even better than he was but based on what I've seen, Duran would beat him.
Sanchez was great but some tend to overlook his less impressive performances.
Instead of focusing on Duran's worst performance, the first DeJesus fight, you should take a look at Duran's best as a LW in the third fight against DeJesus. Duran completely outboxed a game DeJesus in that fight.
