Edwin Valero vs. Amir Khan? It’s possible.
Bob Arum, Valero’s promoter, said he discussed a potential July matchup of the budding young stars with Frank Warren, Khan’s promoter, when he was visiting friends in England last week.
Valero, a complete fighter who has stopped every one of his opponents, must first get past a tough assignment in slugger Antonio Pitalua on April 4 in Austin, Texas.
Valero, moving up in weight, and Pitalua are fighting for the vacant WBC lightweight title.
“That’s a tough fight,” Arum said of Pitalua. “If he comes through, we’re going to maybe put him in with Amir Khan. I spent time with (Warren) at an Arsenal soccer game. He likes the idea. Freddie (Roach, Khan’s trainer) doesn’t think much of Valero.”
Valero (24-0, 24 knockouts) would be a strange choice for Khan, who is coming off a sensational victory over Marco Antonio Barrera on March 14 but was stopped in one round by Breidis Prescott two fights earlier. Khan might be in over his head.
And while insiders are excited about Valero’s immense potential, he doesn’t have the name recognition to generate a lot of money. In other words, for Khan, Valero might too big of a risk for too little gain.
On the other hand, as Roach said, a fighter with a weak chin can learn to protect it. And Khan, who also has great natural ability, seems to be learning quickly under Roach in Hollywood, Calif.
Valero is THE RING’s No. 1-rated junior lightweight.

Great match up for both fighters and the fans.
I wouldn't reccomend Khan fighting him next though, he needs a bit more practice protecting his chin, but for late in the year I would fancy Khan to take him to school.
The fact that Valero could lose every round and still win this fight makes it exciting.
If Khan fought and beat a guy with 100% KO ratio, he really would shut his critics up for a bit.
There are way too many Khan haters on here. Did all the fans of RJJ quit on him or hate him when he got ko'd? I'm sure they didn't, but I guess as long as a guy is undefeated he might as well be a legend. If Valero is slow or is just a haymaker kind of a guy, then Khan will make him look like an amateur while pounding out a wide UD victory. Not unless Khan forgets Roach's in and attack then get the hell back mantra, he will destroy this Valero guy.
Khan would box circles around Valero up until he eventually gets caught.
My thoughts exactly. The fight may be decided on how he reacts to being caught. History would say not well. Khan is vastly more skilled than Valero though, much bigger and much quicker, so provided he doesn't get caught much I'd fancy him to outbox Valero.
Great fight if it happens. I'd be surprised if Warren would dare put Khan in with him though.
like sage said, he'll need to be on his bike for 12 rounds. come to think of it, he's gonna need to be on his bike for the rest of his boxing career with a chin like that.
yeah lol. get the running in Khan!! Roach should make him run 20miles a day to get that stamina to its absolute best!!

Could go either way for me. Valero by KO if he manages to land, Khan by late stoppage or decision if he manages to stay away..BUT for Khan to win he would need to be on his bike for the entire fight, can he do that? I know his stamina is good but to move, punch and run for 12rds takes some doing..
Anyone know what Valero's chin is like? Havent seen that much of him, can he take a punch as well as dishing it out?
He got knocked down by Vicente Mosquera in the 3rd round, I think, back in 2006...
Khan would easily pick him apart.
i agree with this
Valero don't impress me
if he is as powerful as his legend says, he obviously has a good chance though

Would be great if this fight was made but I just cant see Warren letting Khan face anyone who can punch with any amount of power. I still think he will fight mezaache next as its a nice easy fight for him, like usual.
Fingers crossed for Valero fight though
terry norris, the glass chinned warrior once pumelled john mugabi who was known as a powerful and feared puncher in the first round...
i will give amir khan a chance on this one...
