I think Cotto is more skilled but less talented.
Before I get hate: Talent is most natural ability although it can be developed and improved on i.e. Hand Speed, Chin, Stamina, Power are all aspects of talent.
Cotto has beaten fighters more talented than him due to skill. Judah/Mosley with skill. Skill to cut off the ring.....switch to southpaw at opportunistic times, excellent timing, use of a jab.
Calz wins with work rate and hand speed in which he has enjoyed an advantage against all his opponents.
Now you take guys like Hopkins and James Toney they were/are highly skilled boxers. RJJ I think was highly talented. Now that doesn't mean that Hopkins and Toney didn't have talent and it doesn't mean that RJJ didn't have skill.....so don't try and twist that around.
listen, im a big fan of both so i'm the least biased here.
cotto has a great left hook, snappy jab and more power, calzaghe has the faster hands, better adaptability, better punch rate, footwork and stamina. cotto is a better body puncher and is more powerful, thats about it I think.
being a boxing fan! i just cant come here and say that cotto is more skilled!! maybe hes more fun to watch!! but from what i saw of joe.. he definitly have skills.. !
so... in this poll!!.. im not voting .. cos i dont see the option..
both are skilled...
i just cant pick cotto over him.. or him over cotto.. maybe like i say cotto is more fun to watch... but joe got skills...
so... i step back in this one :boxing:
Cotto is more skilled in almost every category except stamina,Joe has had the easier career as well,I think that Joe has done an excellent job of staying undefeated.
Cotto is more technically sound.. But Calzaghe is the best boxer at adjusting in the ring and finding ways to win.. So I would pick Calzaghe as having the more natural talent
As has been been said, if we're talking boxing fundamentals then Cotto is the more skilled fighter. Calzaghe has five key attributes that make him a better fighter though and a better fighter than most:
1. Hand speed - having immense hand speed means that he can land shots against the best defence and in reality it means that sometimes he gets credited for shots that don't land that cleanly.
2. Fitness/Stamina - this lets Calzaghe work for every second of every round. This means that he usually forces opponents to try and keep up. It also means that in close rounds he usually gets the nod.
3. Adaptability - throughout his career, both inbetween fights and in the middle of fights Calzaghe has shown a rare ability to change style in order to get a fight won. For the best example see the Kessler fight. Calzaghe stops squaring his shoulders and starts boxing Kessler from the outside with one-two combinations, frustrating Kessler who came with the plan to counter punch all night.
4. Chin - say what you like about him being put down in his final two fights, but Calzaghe could definately take a punch well. Four knockdowns in a career for a guy who nearly always got caught flush once during a fight due to over-eagerness is impressive. Even moreso when you consider that his final knockdown wasn't even legitimate. Being able to take a punch definately meant that Calzaghe could survive where others couldn't.
5. Jab - the only technical thing Calzaghe does fairly textbook. For a guy who can't punch that hard, he gets good pop behind his jab, opening a fighter up for flurries and scoring vital points. Quick and accurate to boot.
He's more technically sound. I think he's more skilled.
But workrate and chin probably give Calzaghe the edge as far as bein a better fighter.
Cotto's still young though.
No. Calzaghe is better. Don't give me no shit for my opinion either. Thank you. :)

calzaghe is better than cotto, cotto maybe has a better arsenal though.
there's just no way a fighter like margarito would wear down and tko calzaghe, cotto showed he cant adjust the way calzaghe can.
I think Cotto is more skilled, Calzaghe is a better fighter, Calzaghe's strongest attribute is his boxing brain (ability to adapt) and heart and stamina.
Cotto is the better skilled fighter. He can fight backing up, or pressuring the guy. He can counter punch and rely on timing and speed. He can also be the pressure guy and work the body and head.
He can throw a lot of punches and get the guy out of there, or he can take his time and be patient.
Overall, just better to me. Calzaghe might have a bit better of a career thus far, but Cotto is still young.
In your opinion is Cotto a more skilled and better fighter than Calzaghe?
*Obviously relative to their weights*
TBH, all bullshit aside - I do believe Cotto is more skilled and a better fighter than Calzaghe.

Cotto is probably better skilled, but Calzaghe I would say is the better fighter.
