I have watched this fightet over and over, meldrick had 10 of the 12 rounds he got up at the 5 count in the 12th and the ref stopped it with 3 seconds on the clock......
The rematch was four years later. That was more the accumulative effect of Taylor's career and his beatings. Taylor was still much better immediately following the first Chavez fight than he was by the time the rematch came about in 1994. Taylor's performances were up and down right after Chavez I. He looked alright, sort of shaky in his first fight after the loss in his rematch against Ramos, but pretty good against Davis a few months later for a WW title. While there is some truth to Taylor never fully recovering from Chavez I, it has become greatly exaggerated.
In regards to the rematch, Taylor was still competitive with Chavez and actually winning after 5 rounds, probably because Chavez had slipped too. The rematch was long overdue, 3-4 years too late. Taylor surprised most people with how well he fought, but it still wasn't enough regardless. His legs were done after the brutal 6th round.
well the thing is i'm just after reading meldricks book and the 1st chavez fight the rules stated you could be saved by the bell only in the final round.........it all smells to fishy for me,steele was at it
He was never the same after that fight and it showed in the rematch.

My view has actually changed, I always thought Meldrick should of won this fight but looking back at it although Meldrick was schooling Chavez, Chavez was also landing some very hard shots that would obviously take there toll near the end of the fight, I mean he had Meldrick pissing blood after the fight for ****s sake.
This is my favorite fight of all time, I would of liked to seen him win because Meldrick is one of my favorite fighters and yeah he deserved to win, after such a great performance but then you got to look at it from the Steels point of view..
He was just doing what he was suppose to do, protect the fighter from taking anymore punishment.. yeah the light signaled that there was only 10 seconds left but did steel know this? Meldrick had just been badly hurt and was holding on to the ropes all dissorientated and was not answering back to Steel.. so Steel had no choice but to wave it off..
With all that was going on I think the last thing he would of noticed would of been that light that signaled the 10 seconds left of the fight.
Chavez might of won but he was outclassed that night.
Yea...they ask you to walk to them. Note...they ask. When did Taylor respond to anything Steele said?
Yea ur right...the procedure is to ask them if they're ok and then have them walk to you...and Meldrick didn't answer the question
Yea but isn't the ref supposed to make you walk to him? And by that time...the fight wudda been over.

Eldrick???
Topic: Steele did the right thing. Taylor didn't respond and was stopped accordingly. It's not the job of the ref to know the time, but to protect the fighter. If any blame should fall on the incident then Taylor should blame Duva who rushed onto the ring apron shouting like crazy thereby possibly distracting Taylor thereby causing him not to look at Steele.
Steele was one of the best refs for sure.
Exactly, Bat. Duva really screwed that up.
ur making up facts and firing theminto a quick paragraph.....steele got offered no big fights after the taylor chavez bout check it up
I did. And the only one making facts up is you.
Benn-Eubank?
Tyson-Ruddock?
Johnson-Toney?
Barkley-Toney?
How many more fights do I need to give you?
Now beat it...chump.
Why are you resorting to this childish crap? Why do people on these forums act that way? If you say one thing then obviously you must be a fan. Sure. Using that logic you're probably Meldrick's brother.

This forum defies logic and reason.

Steele was given plenty of fights to ref after. Yes, eventually it slowed down but...that's life! LOL. Finally, Taylor wasn't even paying attention to Steele so I'm not sure what you're referring to. But ot suggest he "stole" the victory from Meldrick is insane. Steele, for the record, was an excellent ref.

its the refs job to help a fighter win if don king is good friends with him
So did Steele plan Taylor getting dropped like a bad habit too? How did he orchestrate that?
then why was steele never given any big fights to referee ever since tht bout huh ? he asked taylor twice r u ok in which he nodded.....his eyes where fine n he was stable on his feet.there is no such rule tht states u have to say yes or no to the refs questions

You're insane. He didn't steal any fight, he did his job. He asked Taylor if he was ok (which BTW he wasn't) and Taylor didn't respond--for whatever reason. The ref's job isn't to help a fighter win, it's to ensure a clean fight and do what's right for them health-wise. Steele did both.

it was a close fight....I would have given my nod to JCC though :boxing:
so your sayin the fight should have been stopped ? even tho taylor was on his feet at 5 ?
there was 2 seconds on the clock chavez would or should (going by where he was standing after the knockdown) have been in the neutral corner giving him 2 seconds to make his way across he ring,DOUBT IT.......richard steele stole that fight from meldrick n you can tell by his interviews and body language at the press after he fight
