a look in as most fans just assume its robinson, ali, duran, pep, louis, johnson, learnard or armstrong cos well thats what most people say. But what about the guys in my poll. For me the greatest fighter to ever live was a toss up between Langford or greb. Poll to come
I realy don't know has much as you guy about boxing, but I'll go with Gene Tuney. The man beat every one in tought competition and avenge is lost.
I'm not a personnal fan of is style, but he hit the lhw and hw big time and he was a pioner of studying is opponent on video before the fight.
:boxing:
Burley beat archie moore 3 times, something only charles matched, yes bivins beat moore but moore beat bivins 3 times. Also eddie futch said burley was the best he ever seen. Also you have got to be good when robinson, conn, la motta openly avoid you.
Moore was a better fighter when he fought Bivins than when he fought Burley and Bivins had also started to decline as a fighter when he lost to Moore.
Bivins' peak record was amazing (before he lost a controversial split decision to Jersey Joe Walcott) with wins over Charles, Burley, Moore, Marshall, Maxim, Lesnevich, Pastor, Mauriello, Savold and many others, going undefeated from 1942 to 1946...
Charles, in my opinion, was unquestionably the best of the lot. He started his career as a middleweight, went onto reign as a heavyweight champion and beat all of the best fighters around his time.
Okay. I'll have a look and get back to you (you wouldn't happen to have any links handy would you?). I'd say more people regard Hagler as the greatest, but I suppose that is neither here nor there, as they say.
In your opinion, what made Monzon a better fighter than Hagler?
He (monzon) retired champion, beat over all better fighters, and if they were to meet monzon would of beat hagler on points, maybe stoped him on cuts?
Burley beat Moore once and only come up because of Futch's quote. He lost to Charles twice with both at Middleweight. He was great but he was not the GOAT. Charles is much more slighted by history than Burley ever is because, at his best, Charles was in the argument.
yeah my fault dont know were i got 3 times from.

I will give you mine in the meantime
smarts
I am not sure I rank Monzon above Hagler but damn the guy must have been frustrating to fight
Nah have to disagree there, I haven't seen many Monzon fights, but Hagler was almost unbeatable in his day.
This blown up welter you speak of is quite probably a Top ATG! He made the mistake of trying to outbox Leonard in the early rounds which cost him dearly. As soon as he started fighting his own style, he started putting rounds in the bank. Had it been a 15-rounder (no wonder Leonard demanded a 12 round scrap!), Hagler wouldn't have lost.
If you think this isn't the case, can you recommend some good Monzon fights for me to watch so I can judge better. Cheers
Btw curly perm - absolutely hilarious! :)
Monzon vs Nino Benvenuti 1 and 2. Monzon vs Jose Napoles who was welterweight champion at the time and considerd by many pound for pound the best in the world at the time. Monzon vs bennie brisco and monzon vs valdes 1 and 2 and monzon vs Tony Licata. Then you will see why they call him the greatest middleweight of all time

Where is Charles? No one ever mentions him as potential greatest (whatever that means), but I can't easily make an argument for ANY fighter above him. Not easily at least.
Burley and Holman Williams went 3-3 against each other.
Lytell beat Burley once, lost once.
Marshall won a close decision against Burley.
Charles won two clear decisions against Burley.
Jimmy Bivins won a clear decision against a prime Burley.

They wasnt as good as burley, they were just as avoided but not as good

Greb and Langford are the top two. Both have incredible resumes but the fact that there is very little footage of them hurts their status.
The same could be said about Charley Burley but there were other fighters around his time that were just about as great if not even greater than he was but get even less credit for what they did.

Hagler should go in front of Monzon IMO. And Duran before Chavez.
No monzon was better than hagler, as a fighter and monzon retired champion, and hagler lost his title to a blown up welter who had boxed once in 6 years. But props to curly perm he was a great middleweight who beat hearns, duran and mugabi.
