Does nationality take a precedent you when two guys are fighting and one is from the same country as you? Or dont you care?
I personally do not care, but some people cannot help letting nationalistic feeling get in the way. Im not criticizing them, if that is their opinion thats fine, but what do you think to all this?
Nationality has an effect on who I am rooting for. Not as much as skill, passion, attitude, style. But it does have an effect. I am rooting for Omar Sheika to beat RJJ for all of the above except skill.
To answer the question in all honesty, it has in the past and to some degree it still does today. Like everyone else is saying, it has to do with pride.
If I were to explain it, I guess a big portion of it can be answered by just looking at what happens right here in this forum. If a Mexican cheats, then some people get all racist and let their true feelings come out about all Mexicans. If a Mexican gets beat up, it's more of the same, with name-calling and stupid jokes (hey, I can be a fan of ignorant humor in doses, but some of the shite posted here ain't even funny to begin with, but gets co-signed by morons. At least make it funny, d*ckwads.). It's the trash talking after the fight that partly makes me want my fighter to win.
And since all Latinos are lumped in together here in the US ("hispanics"), I also tend to root for other Latinos. If two no-names are fighting, I find myself gravitating towards the Latino or the "minority." I guess it's about "identifying" with the fighter.
Another thing, I know this is weird, but no other sport is really written about the same way boxing is. It's perfectly natural to say the "Mexican or the Puerto Rican or the Filipino or the Russian, etc. was destroyed and brutally knocked out." I don't know about you, but I don't like reading stuff like "The is a disgrace." Ha ha.
For me, personally, I've grown up my whole life hearing people talk down to Mexicans. One thing that I like about boxing is that a fighter, through skills and heart, can win the admiration of anyone on the planet. Even a racist scumbag boxing fan can maybe take a second and have to admit that a fighter of another ethnicity is talented and can show some respect back.
Hope I didn't get all kumbaya on you.
Yeah it does for me and im not ashamed to admit that
cosign. That's one of the main reasons I like ^^^^^^, he's full of nationalistic and ethnic pride.
Thats what puzzles me too.
Why is there so many fans of British premier league clubs that would rather have success with a bunch of foreign players, than be more supportive of a team full of English men(the England team)
Most English people dont give two shits about the England team now days.
Club ALWAYS becomes before country its a fact that you have to face. Still most of us want the national side to win very few people want it to lose. Often if no players from your club are in the national team uyou lose interest in it.
Nope, there is no room in my fanhood for that nonesence,Im from the land of Julian Jackson and Livingstone Bramble, they are both good fighters, but I knew when they were going to lose.I find myself liking underdog fighters who are avoided, but are good enough to beat the stars if they ever got a chance, fighters like Winky, the Punisher,Joshua Clottey,Cambell,Diaz and so forth!!
I suppose in fairness it might not be mucho mucho mucho his first language.
It didn't stop you from antagonizing the indonesian fellow for not speaking proper queens english....
Of course i'll support my home country first its a matter of pride to me.
Actually thats not true in football when PL clubs play in the CL i want them to lose especially if arsenal arnt winning

Another question.
Do you think American fans would be more biased towards there own fighters the way Mexicans,Brits.PR are, if they had, had less success over the years?
Thats assuming you dont think they are already very nationlistic of coarse. I dont, but maybe that is the reason why they are less inclined to be nationalistic than Mexicans,Brits,PR etc.
No, he meant that when he sees a fighter from his country then his nationality takes Obama hostage.
There are some well-educated folk in NSB.
