If Floyd Mayweather never fights again how would you rate his legacy?
To me he's a sure Hall-of-Famer (HOF'er) who falls short of All-Time-Greatness (ATG). That's primarily due to him retiring in his prime when dangerous challengers were looming in the horizon.
My defintion of an All time great- A fighter that would be great in any era.
HOF defintion- One of the best fighters of your era
I think that FLoyd fits into both categories. He is a sure fire first ballot HOF for sure.
I think that FLoyd had the talent, phsyical skill, boxing brain and dedication to the sport (training like a mad man, never out of shape, the way he worked at his craft) to be a true chapion in any era.
He may not have loved the sport, but countless fighters throughout history only fought to pay the bills so I do not hold it against him.
I've seen him fight and by watching his skillset and his accomplishments, he is in my mind a bonafide ATG
He's nowhere near top 10 OAT but i would place him top 50
I would also favour him over any 130lber in history, and before the haters start complaining, i have seen Arguello but i just feel a prime mayweather was an absolute beast at 130, his speed and defense were accompanied by power ( Compared to the higher weights ) and he may be the most accurate puncher ever
And to the TS, you don't honestly feel Calzaghe is greater than Floyd do you, i understand your a huge Kessler fan but having Kessler as your biggest win is not ATG worthy
My main issue with Floyd is written in the TS. Retiring in his prime while dangerous challengers where waiting. That's not an ATG IMO.

He has done enough to go HOF... he is not an ATG..not yet anyway
no, we can discuss it all day. the bottom line is Pernell and Roy both have some pretty embarrassing losses on their resumes, regardless of what excuses you want to make. Floyd has only had one close fight his entire career and even that was because he fought one-handed for 11 rounds. so, no, I don't see how any of them have more impressive resumes or better skills than Mayweather
Bottom line is Mayweather last fought at age 30.
Find embarassing losses for Jones or Whitaker in their primes.
That's what I thought.
What embarrassing losses does Pernell Whitaker have ? he lost to Felix Trinidad way past his prime and whilst having a drug problem, but he still fought braverly and his loss to Carlos Bojorquez was when he broke his clavicle. And that shouldn't count as a loss.
lol so let's never count a loss when a fighter suffers an injury from now on, seems about right
Translation: well, I'm sorry but I don't know enough for a case being made for any of those guys above Mayweather

I think he will be considered as both a Hall of Famer and an All Time Great in the future... his skills alone put him up there easily, I am unsure on where about he would be in the All Time Greats list... I would have to put some thought into it. Anyway yeah I think he is both an ATG and HOF.
Pernell Whitaker, clearly has the better competition. Pernell Whitaker beat the great Azumah Nelson, who on Floyd Mayweather Jr's resume is even close to someone like that ?
A faded De La Hoya who hadn't had a significant win in six years, of course. Come on, BD.
Roy's 2nd best win was a green Hopkins who hadn't gotten his fighting style down yet
I'll take Floyd's wins over prime Corrales, prime Castillo 2x, Chavez, Judah, De La Hoya and Hatton over Roy's resume any day of the week. not to mention, Floyd constantly moved up in weight while he did all of this. Roy sat at 175 cherry picking for years
In other words..Floyd doesn't have a win better than James Toney?
I'd explain the rest of their resumes but let's face it, you wouldn't know a Reggie Johnson from a Reggie Jackson.
Carry on.
maybe you could say Roy was better if Roy's competition was anything like Floyd's but it wasn't. His one great win is James Toney
a) the easily is my problem. I don't disagree with Mayweather being the best of the last 20 years. It is a legit opinion like having Pea or Roy would be.
b) You will find plenty of ppl here who will tell you that Jones competition was way better than Mayweather's. I think you and them are both wrong, but I find it a silly debate so I won't get into that.
1. His competiton was better.
2. Who did Floyd ever beat that was a prime James Toney's level?

The last 20 years would be from 1989 so you have: Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker, Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins etc. I think easily would be a bit too eager. Top 5, yes.
