I'm thinking... Vietcong TKO9 USA? Will it be that big of an upset? It is a bigger upset/win than Ricky Hatton's over Kostya Tszyu, right? And definately a bigger upset/win than Joe Calzaghe's over Jeff Lacy? I wonder where Cotto will go after this loss.
I can't wait for this one!
Right....
Firstly calling Jennings British rather than English.
Secondly use the Gibraltar example rather than northern ireland if you want then...when comparing PR to America.
Ok you can cool your boots mate and put your dummy back it:bottle: (joke)
You are missing the point the poster said WE (being "british") were adopting Jennings as one of our own, when he already is! And the Cotto thing was just a comment in that the tone of some posters suggests he is treated as one of your own (if he the poster I quoted is Puerto Rican then fine, I stand corrected over such a minor point) I was talking more generally and as most of his fights have been in the states (pick that apart and will I don’t have time to check how many he had at home), then he is likely to be embraced by you it wasn’t a critiscm more a comment that’s all. Additionally my "statement" wasn’t one of fact more my opinion therefore how can that be false?
For your information Puerto Rican's are American Citzens, as far as I was aware (as I believe they can be drafted into your army as well) therefore technically he is American (if you want to get picky). In the same way someone born in Northern Ireland is Northern Irish but also British. Or someone born in Gibraltar I believe is a British citzen.
Anyways I would rather talk about the fight.
I've always thought of someone born in Ireland, Wales, Scotland etc as Welsh, Scotish or Irish and not British. The difference between PR and Ireland and the like are that Wales, Scotland etc are classed as entire countries in themselves.
I didn’t write my post to cause any antagonism let me get that straight first and foremost.
I am little shocked at how it has been taken, the fact I went on (and on and on…) about the merits of both the fighters (after what was a throw away comment) leaves me a little surprised at yours and another posters response and that’s the only thing you picked up on? Out of the whole thing? I wasn’t being nationalist (in the true sense of the word), I think my post was pretty balanced (on the whole about both fighters).
My comment about Cotto and Americans probably wasn’t worded as well as it could have been and reading back I can understand your point of view. It was merely an add on to the British adopting Jennings, in the sense the Americans probably have "adopted" Cotto as one of there own (technically he is anyway) due to his exciting fights in the states and so on (and we cant adopt Jennings if you see what I mean?). Hell if he fought here I would go!! Would beat seeing a Frank Warren Bum of the Month bout! Or even worse still Fraudley Harrison.
And finally if I chose to remark that there seems to be a Cotto bias from American posters (understandably so by the way, why wouldn’t there be) is that really a problem? As a comment? I haven't antagonised anyone, my opinions on boxing are not at all nationalist, Yes probably have a better idea of British and European fighters than maybe you do as I have more exposure to them, in the same way you will of American ones (although I do my best to keep up).
No, your comment wasn't offensive in any way compared to the one you responded to. I may have took it out of context and jumped to conclusions. Cotto is a very humble fighter who would attract fans from all across the globe so Americans or any other nationality for that matter could adopt him as their favorite fighter. I, myself am a fan of Jennings. The outcome probably won't end in my favor when they square off, but in the end it will be a good fight hopefully. Nice chatting with you.....
I didn't disagree with you about the British vs English point, just about these supposed people who are claiming Cotto as their own countrymen. I rather discuss the fight as well because a fighters nationality should be the last thing that gets mentioned when describing a bout between two combatants. There is too much nationalism on this board already without me adding to it.

mark my words: Cotto will be on destruction mode as soon as the bell sounds.
i think he's gonna show that he's not damaged and i think right now that he have more confidence since the margacheater thing and that he knows that he's the top WW right now. he needs to fight mosley again of course
I agree, I hope he isnt for Jennings sake, but he needs to send a message, rematch with Moseley then maybe Margarito again and avenge the defeat?
What you don't realize is that some fans are capable of supporting fighters who don't come from their home country. It is sad that this is a foreign concept to you.
You are kidding with this right??
It was merely a comment, as to the tone of some of the posters, christ what is wrong with you? How can this be a foreign concept to a man from a country as multi cultural as mine, couple with that the fact I have travelled the world and lived in American and Canada!!
This has been blown way out of propotion but still that’s what I would expect.
No Americans are adopting Cotto as their own. That is a false statement. You can be a fan of a fighter who has a different nationality than you without claiming them as one of your countrymen. If you did want to get technical, PR is a commonwealth of the United States. Either way no one is calling Cotto an American.
EDIT: The poster you quoted is Puerto Rican.

I quoted it at the start of my post!

Do you support anyone not from Great Britain? Or do you just root for a nation.
I quoted it at the start of my post!

He is English!! So the only adopting going on is Americans adopting a Cotto as one of their own!
One thing which isn't necessarily understood across the pond is "British" tends to be a term for Olympics (taking in four countries England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales) I mean you wouldn’t call a Scotsman or a Welshman British they would take your head off!! Kind of like calling you lot all "North Americans". Anyway geography lesson over.
As for Jennings, he has beaten decent domestic level fighters and probably win the European title (as he has already beaten the current champ Rafal Jackiewicz on points). His best wins have probably been the following off the top of my head.
Rafal Jackiewicz
Bradley Pryce
Takaloo
Ross Minter
None of these names are going to frighten Cotto one bit, however he has to believe he can do it. I don’t care what Cotto is saying, is he really taking Jennings seriously? I don’t think so, it SHOULD be a routine night for him (a bit like the Gomez fight). I think he will expect (and may get) a Pavlik vs. Lockett type result. Jennings needs to box and move and hopefully catch Cotto with something early to make him think a bit, he may not be a big banger but I don’t think Cotto's chin is filled with granite (I am not saying he is chinny by the way). I think if Cotto is expending more energy than he has to it will play into Jennings hands if the fight goes late, Jennings just has to survive the opening four rounds. All the stuff to do with the Margarito fight (about his hands and so on) clouds the fact that the reason Cotto lost was he ran out of steam, he was schooling him up until the 6th (I think), therefore a possible ***** in his armour maybe?
I think Cotto will come out blasting, so Jennings has to be ready to be elusive and not give him a static target (like Margerito did). If he can pop his jab then stay just out of range he will make Cotto reach for it more and he could counter. I think the problem will be Cotto will cut the ring off and start to unload and its whether Jennings is physically strong enough to smother that work or his footwork is good enough to get out of trouble.
Trying to give a balanced view of things Cotto has fought at the higher level and possesses more power and shot selection than Jennings, on the negative side I think his stamina, maybe his mental state and possibly his chin could be questioned (could being the operative word). Jennings is untested and unproven at this level, he hasn’t faced anyone of Cotto's undoubted class or being in a fight of this level of media attention, he does have height and reach advantages which he will need to exploit, against is whether he has the physical strength and power to hold off Cotto and whether he truly believes he can do a number on him.
I think if Jennings can go the distance whatever the result that will be an achievement. I wish him all the luck in the world and to come back to England in one piece. I would love him to win as it would be a real fairy tale story, like lockett he is a really down to earth friendly guy who deserves the nation behind him!
Does anyone know when the weigh in is?
Where did you hear that from?
the bristish are adopting this bum as their own, anybody seen him box?
is he any good?
if jennings upsets miguel
it wouldnt be bigger than margarito-cotto....

You know, this thread sounds a lot like GLeon, whenever he dislikes a fighter he picks him to win, to blow away the other guy saying he's no good, only to bash him if the fight goes the distance or turns out to be a close one, God forbids if he loses.
