I always thought once you had a pro fight, that was it, amateur is no longer allowed.
Ruslan Chagaev had 2 Pro fights in 1997. But he also won
1998 Won the gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok,
1999 International Boxing Cup
1999 Represented Uzbekistan at the 1999 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Houston.
1999 Asian Championships - gold medal
2000 Represented Uzbekistan at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
2001 Won the gold medal at the 2001 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Belfast.
So can someone please clear this up for me.
309.3. Conditions for disqualification
A boxer member shall be barred from participating in any capacity in USA Boxing’s programs
by committing any of the following acts:
(1) Competing for compensation.
(2) Coaching, instructing or preparing any person for competition when other than actual
expenses incurred for that specific task are received beyond established limits.
(3) Receiving compensation for athletic services.
(4) Capitalizing on athletic fame.
(5) Competing with or against ineligible persons.
(6) Becoming a professional.
i doubt it's different for aiba or any other international organization.
and I thought exhibitions were three rounds...these were scheduled for 4.
this is baloney. Im taking away all of Chagaev's amateur credentials because of this corruption of the system.
although honestly I wish pros could fight in the amateurs again. Imagine how awesome the Olympics would be!
seriously, what a dumb thing. almost all other sports get to participate in the Olympics, right?
You absolutely can not go back to amatuer once you had a pro fight. However, in certain countries for certain fighters they do manage to pull off some bullshit moves like that. I too heard about that a long time ago. Its not suppose to happen, but neither is steroids, tampered handwraps, etc.
After being stripped of his crown for having two pro fights prior to the championships, Chagaev was reinstated as an amateur when the fights were declared exhibitions.
that sounds like some BS to me. if theyre exhibitions, then they shouldnt be on his record.
