Lennox Lewis is quite cool, I think they should have David haye on commentary too!
Lewis is the worst of all time man!
Not a bad shout about Haye tho i think he'd be great, Hopkins wouldnt be bad either and i like Roy on commentry, apparently he is coming to Sentanta
For anyone whos hasnt heard Holdsworth hes on this vid after Tyson clips(Cedric Fields fight).

IF U HAVENT WATCHED THIS WATCH IT NOW ITS ****IN GENIUS! :lol1:
HBO/Showtime any time over ITV/Sky/Setanta, and I'm a Brit.
Each one of the pundits pisses me off on Brit channels, and the commentators annoy me even though I don't know why. There's just something irritating about their tone of voice, delivery and opinions.
I find Lampley and co. (Kellerman, Steward, Merchant), although not perfect by any means, to be far more interesting in their discussions and delivery. I genuinely like to hear what they have to say about a fight before, during and after.
That's why I always prefer to download (and keep) any caps made of American broadcasts than Brit ones. The only reason I've kept, for example, both HBO and ITV versions of Calzaghe-Manfredo, is because the latter has more build-up and stuff. Otherwise, for commentary, Brit stuff is throwaway for me.
I have to say the Yanks are great with the comentary. They get overly excited and dramatise everything but I like it like that. I'll take HBO PPV over Setanta any day.
I love the HBO team because of the excitement they add to the fights, I dunno why...I love it when a big shot lands and you have Lampley shouting it "HARD RIGHT HAND!", althought they can nuthug...a lot at times.
Its it me or is British commentary so boring and unenthusiastic , i love lampley and atlas.
Dude when you watch HBO version of Pavlik vs Taylor 1,Pavlik vs Miranda there is no comparison to the British version. Lampley is great, but only when he wants to get excited about a fighter he likes.
Look how poorly they commentated on Hatton's loss to Floyd. Teddy Atlas is awful:lol1:
I prefer American broadast when watching American based fighters and British commentary when watching British fighters. dont ask me why.:boxing:
HBO
Jim Lampley is the best in the business, no one brings as much passion for the sport to that mic as he does.
Say what you will about Max Kellerman, but he is a knowledgeable person who is a fan first and a commentator second, and that's a good thing.
Larry Merchant is creepy.
You'd be hard pressed to find someone with a better mind for the sport to have on commentary than Emmanuel Stewart. It's happened more than once where he's correctly predicted the outcome of a fight to almost the very minute.
Lennox Lewis has the experience as a fighter to put himself in that situation and visualize what he'd do. Usually it's a double jab.
Showtime
Steve Albert almost like Lampley, just not on the same level. Good voice to listen to especially when there is action going on.
Al Bernstein is smart and informative, and not nearly as creppy as Merchant.
Jim Grey is a prick.
ESPN
I really like Teddy Atlas, I know not many people are too big on him here at these forums. But he's a guy you could learn a lot from and his "keys to victory" are very informative.
Bob Papa is very good and will eventually make a great successor to Lampley should he ever step away from the main stage. I really like his work on FNF and BAD.
BTW, yes I have heard Sky Sports commentary before and I just didn't like it. It's basically just a matter of where you come from I guess. The American HBO team is by far the best in my opinion, so don't get on my ass about it. If you like Sky Sports or whatever, fantastic. None of us are either right or wrong. So let's not turn this into a US vs UK circle jerk.
I couldn't agree more, last thing you want to hear after a fight is Jim Grey doing an interview.
I can't speak on the British commentary, as I have only heard it on internet video clips, and I am usually watching more to judge something for myself, and generally don't pay attention to the announcers.
As for American Announce teams
HBO
Play by Play
Lampley - He does his primary job as a play by play man about as well as it can be done. When he steps away from the play by play role he does get alittle on the biased side especially toward HBO boxers, to make things worse, I think he realises this sometimes and does a 180 and overcompensates in his praise for the opponent, which makes his words ring hollow sometimes.
Still when it comes to announcing the action, and leading you through the action, which is what play by play is supposed to do there are none better.
Papa - He is one of my favorites, and 2nd only to Lampley. He doesn't seem as biased as Lampley, and I think thats because his primary employer isn't HBO, and he knows he won't be edging Lamps out anytime soon. IMO he does a more even type broadcast than Lampley, not getting as overly excited in spots like Lampley (I think this comes from working with Atlas who is ultra excitable, thus he is used to playing the straight man)
Color Man
Merchant - He is far past his prime. The only entertainment he provides for me at this point is unintentional.
Kellerman - Its good that he is a fan of the game, because it provides him with a natural passion, but it also provides obvious bias in his commentary. Also, he tends to go off into obscure factoids sometimes.
Experts
Steward - Probably my favorite, has a deep knowledge, provides good analysis.
Lewis - Has improved a ton since he began. I like it when he corrects Kellerman.
Judge
Lederman - Is the worst of the bunch. I don't know what they pay him, but they should stop, and give more money to undercard boxers. The only entertainment he provides is when he and Merchant disagree on a point, thats comic gold.
Showtime
Play by Play
Alberts - Less pronounced version of Lampley. Best thing you can say about him is you don't notice him, meaning that he has no glaring weaknesses to point out, and he is just there to guide you through the action.
Johnson - I have never like him. He is a paradox in that he is either waaaaaay over the top or seemingly disinterested in whats happening.
Color Man
Bernstein - I just don't like him. No reason. Dont like him as a judge either.
ShoBox Crew
I am probably alone in liking this team. Only problem is once they go to action I can tell which one is which. Still I like their insite, dry humor, and usually judge fights same as they do.
ESPN
Play by Play
Papa - Got to appreciate a guy who can work with a personality like Atlas. He does a good job working in ESPN promos and his thoughts in slow points in matches on FNF.
Color/Expert
Atlas - Strong over the top personality. Sometimes far to passionate. Likes to droll on over the same point over and over and over and over and over etc again during a fight. Some of the analogies he uses make no sense. He is also a horrible judge when it comes to scoring fights (and getting worse). In the end though I love the guy, he is 100% entertainment and knows his stuff (Alot of his Keys to Victory are spot on).
Jim can be annoying and repetitive at times ("full blooded shots!") but he knows what he's talking about and is enthusiastic.
Jim is THE Worst in my opinion, well behind Rawling.
And OBVIOUSLY the ATW is Lewis man he sux!
For anyone whos hasnt heard Holdsworth hes on this vid after Tyson clips(Cedric Fields fight).

:lol1: HAHA That WHOLE Video was QUALITY! As usual tho Steve was the craziest!
Setanta regularly have a broadcast that includes Fat Yank commentators these days, though not the main HBO boys.
And yes, that's Steve.
I meant Jim Watt and the other guy though. Jim Watt is probably one of my favorites.
