I was discussing this the other day, his uncle dont seem like he actually does much Cotto seems to almost train himself at times also their stormy relationship cant be a good thing! I think he has taught Cotto as much as he can and perhaps its time for someone new.
BUT then again Cotto has beat everyone put in front of him bar Margarito who it appears may have cheated so whatever Evangalisto and Cotto have been doing has been working. Its also a CRUCIAL time in Cotto's career coming off his sole loss, does Cotto need to be trying new things and taking time to gel with a new trainner or just do what has worked so far. Cotto strikes me as the kinda guy who might not like change. But it may be what he needs.
On a side note if u voted for a change who would u like to see him with?
Nazim Richardson is with Rival and futre oppenent Mosley, Freddie Roach is with another potential rival and big money fight in Manny Pacquaio. Both trainners seem loyal to their guy as well.
Then uve got Mayweather Snr who works with rivals ODH and Hatton but would make the switch if the cash was right. Or Nacho Berstien. Loads of less aclaimed yet quality trainners out there too.
Who would u like to see him switch too if anybody?
jordan became a better teamate when he got phil jackson.cotto needs teddy atlas, or kevin rooney to improve his defense in that peek a boo style.
Nah i aint feeling Rooney as a choice man, he's washed up and too loud and in ur face for Cotto
Another thing i was thinking should a fighter like Cotto who can on occasion struggle with his english have a non spanish speaking trainner i mean if Cotto gets into the deep waters late in a fight with someone and is a lil buzzed will the instuctions be clear enough for him? And i think its TERRIBLE when a corner has a translater like Mormeck did against Haye with Richie Giogetti.
You might be right about this. An ADDITIONAL trainer might cause some friction. NOt that there wasn't some already in the past, but I mean if the Margarito loss brought them together let's not mess with the fragile relationship, eh?
Yea Richardsons looking top notch right now. But you know Shane's gonna stick with him for a while, and he WANTS to fight Cotto. I don't think Cotto would allow the "enemy" into his camp to study Cotto, know what I mean?
Ok RJJ's former trainer.
NOT MANNY STEWARD!!! I mean think about how mad he gets at Taylor for doing his own thing in the ring.
Taylor dropped him cause the chemistry wasn't working. Manny came in to 'change direction', not to 'add momentum'.
Plus, personally, I don't like trainers that stretch themselves thin. They're all over training this person, that person, traveling everywhere to help so many. There's more quality when there's less quantity.
Yea, Mayweather Sr's doing a FINE job with Hatton!
Hatton looked slick against Malignaggi.
And he did an AWESOME job with Forbes when he faced Berto too!
His training SHOWS!
But Keep in mind Hatton is trying 110% to bend to what May wants.
He even said after the fight, that he was struggling to stick to the training, but
is eager to do what Floyd tells him. I don't know if Cotto would 'bend'.

The usual quality posting from anonnymous! :boxing:
Honestly and i know this will never happen but i think Adam Booth would be great for Cotto he is very knowledgeable uses modern trainning and has a great outlook on the sport i REALLY rate the guy even tho aside from Haye he has yet to start producing Champiuons but he will. I think his calm positve approach would gel well with Cotto i could really see them getting on but it wont happen
All the GBP boys are actually in love with Cotto IMO. If Arum was to kick the bucket today, you can rest assured that GBP would swoop in with a quickness and pick up Cotto.
There's no ill blood between Cotto and Mosley. They actually got along quite well during their promotional tour. And if you notice, Oscar and Bernard are always including Cotto in their words when talking about the best fighters today.
Looks like Arum might not even have to kick the bucket Cotto is pissed with him, i think they might split! Could be getting ahead of myself here tho
I don't think another trainer to supervise his uncle would be good, though. Too many cooks in the kitchen and all that.

Very good points...maybe someone like Richardson. Maybe RJJ's old trainer (Alan Mirkenson? fuzzy on his name, sorry)? Manny Steward? Somebody that would be better able to work with what's already there rather than create an entirely new look. Although May Sr has been kinda' doin' that with Hatton, right?

If Hopkins took up trainning theres no way he would train a Mosley rival, those guys are tight!
Manny Steward seems to like Cotto and appreciate what his strengths are but also recognise his weakness' judging from what i hear him say when he's commentating but yeah i agree he wont get a new trainner and will stick with his uncle. Was just curious to see what people thought he SHOULD do

Yea, Bernard REALLY impressed me in his last countdown. When he was sitting with Richardson, and analyzing. I never saw that side of Bernard before. He even spoke effectively.
I can see him being a good trainer to someone that's early in their career. They'd respect what he has to say and there'd be no friction.
But it's like Cotto's already set. He's at the top, and his 'clay' can't be molded too much more.
He HAS to want the new training, but I doubt that'll happen.
He's STUBBORN cause he wins, but then again, he wins cause he's stubborn.
haha!

Doubt it'll happen but maybe fun to talk about. Cotto and his uncle have had their disagreements. Maybe Cotto would benefit from some different input. I like Mayweather Sr or how about Bernard Hopkins? Teach him a little better defense?
I don't think another trainer to supervise his uncle would be good, though. Too many cooks in the kitchen and all that.
Hes uncle is a very good trainer. Look at how Evangelista took Urango to a champioship twice, and Urango is very limited. Evangelista is very good, but you can go so far with a trainer, so I think he should bring somebody just to have other looks and make some adjustments. Evangelista trains a lot of world class fighters like Urango, Estrada, Cotto, Rojas, ect, ect, ect. After 3 or 4 years he will be as known as the top trainers like Manny and Roach. So Cotto should not change his trainer he just needs to have a extra, to point some of his flaws and somebody that can control him. Cotto is a stubburn MOFO!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think he's a bad trainer, but in every Cotto fight I see Cotto himself making the adjustments, not Evangelista, like you see Richardson or Roach do. Also, they disrespected each other, I think they'll disrespect each other again, Evangelista can not discipline or motivate Cotto.
i dont think it would make a difference, and to be honest, i thought personally the corner work was very good in the cotto margarito fight, very professional and calm.
I think there is a huge difference from being in the corner, and sitting ringside amongst the fans. The mentality would be totally different. Why do you think B-Hop wouldn't make a great trainer? Richardson just points things out for him as the fight goes on, but most of the time it's all Bernard. He's a mega gym rat and is ultra disciplined, he'd train Cotto the same way.
This is just all fantasy talk anyway. I really don't see Cotto getting a new trainer anytime soon if at all.

I mean you see how frustrated Mayweather Sr gets with Hatton, or Manny Steward gets with Taylor, cause both fighters hear and agree with what their trainers are telling them to do. But I imagine just like the others Cotto would revert to HIS way of doing things, but Bernard is strongly-opinionated, so it wouldn't mesh well.
It doesn't matter WHAT trainer you bring to Cotto. If, for example, he prides himself on his ability to win without holding, NOONE can teach him how to hold.
He HAS to want the new training, but I doubt that'll happen.

I'm gonna just copy and paste something I said in another thread...
It's about preparation. Cotto doesn't watch film. How do you get to this level and not watch film? Evangilista doesn't command enough respect from Cotto to actually learn from him even if Evangelista was that knowledgeable(which I don't think he is). He just doesn't prepare mentally the way he needs to, they as a team are more preoccupied with what THEY'RE going to do. It's really kind of arrogant if you think about it.
Couple that with the fact that they don't really get along, and he needs a new trainer.
Another trainer could tighten some things for Cotto. I never thought of an ADDITIONAL trainer.
I AGREE with that! Someone's gotta teach him how to tie the other guy up!!!
He doesn't even KNOW how to hold. He looks awkward when he does. He prides himself on never holding which makes him exciting to watch, but now that he's at the top, he needs EVERY TRICK.
B-Hop is GOOD. But being good at fighting, and being good at training are TWO different skills!
Bernard can't sit still in his own seat while being in the audience. You think Cotto would like someone jumping down his throat with THEIR opinion every minute of the fight!?
NO WAY!!!! It'd probably distract more than help someone who concentrates on their own.
He needs someone that doesn't try to change him but takes his already existing strengths to a new level.
Bernard doesn't seem like the type to bend that way.
