I've heard a lot of people, including Jim Lampley say that Miguel Cotto hits harder than Shane Mosley.
I disagree, no disrespect here, I just think Shane cracks while Miguel thuds. Shane's got one punch power, which seems to be concussive at times. Miguel beats you down over the course of the fight.

I seen similar poll floating around recently, after the Cotto fight. Don't know how that one turned out, but here's how this one turned out, shortly after Shane's KO of Margarito. 52 to 36 for Shane.
Where there is speed behind a punch, lies power.
Cotto is a heavy handed puncher, but not as fast, but the speed is good enough.
Overall.... Cotto is the more comitted damaging puncher. I mean... Look at Cotto's opponents faces.. :ugh:

Mmmm…they are both heavy handed individuals. I favor Mosley Prime, but currently Cotto can generate slightly more force (as if it matters), thanks to his age.
using the margo fights as barometer for who hits harder is imo slightly unrealiable. when margo faced cotto he was hngry and lacked the recognition that he flt he deserved, he seemed supernatural at times. theres still the issue of hand wraps, until that is cleared up we can't say for sure.
when he faced sugar shane some of the macho bravado had gone, the same energy and intensity of pressure was no longer there neither. heck you could say the hunger was missing.
but if you were to look at their shots and their punches i will say this suagr shane was twisting nd throwing everything beind behind the punch, he was at times swinging the right hand right around, it didn't look like a straight right but more like a right hook. i think thats a weakness that shane had spotted in the cotto fight, margo isn't one to look to parry or bloack or duck.
id say though looking over their careers that cotto is the better puncher when it comes to strength, technique and maybe even in terms of accuracy (his combos were often quicker than sugars), his punches have more of a thud. shanes punches are quicker, his handspeed is better and he has more pop as well, hes not as powerful a puncher as cotto but even then hes not too far behind.
Cotto hits harder, Shane hits hard but during the marg fight shane was loading up on his punches and landing bombs on marg, Cotto was just punching him cleanly

Cotto hits harder in combination , shane taps and sets up for the big one.
They both have good power but even mosley said after the Cotto fight that cotto had him "buzzed" a couple times.
Good comparisons. And no body hurts John Brown. Whatever happened to that midget?
fcukin crazy that dude was as was his cornerman. I seem to remember some bizzare training techniques he and his trainer used to use to get him in shape.
Two common opponents Demetrio Ceballos,John Brown.
Shane absolutely destroyed Demetrio Ceballos and looked spectacular doing it. Cotto beat him in what i thought was a lackluster display.
Mosley had a very scrappy fight with the awkward John Brown, but he did eventually hurt John Brown and if i remember right his corner pulled him out. When Cotto fought Brown he did not hurt him once from what i remember.
Cotto v Brown,Mosley v Brown>boring.

I think that sounds about right, however, the punches that Shane landed to knock Margarito out Saturday were 100% LOADED UP (and I mean the punches that knocked him out, from the 8th round to the end). If you watch him throw those punches he was T-ing off on that mo fo. That straight left hand he threw really stunned Margarito at the end of the 8th.
All the other hard punches Shane threw that night were very flush just like Cotto's but he had to put ALL of his power and weight into that one left hand that finally hurt Margarito. I think if Cotto had been able to load up a huge punch like that he would have stunned Margarito too, but his gameplan was just a lot different. Shane knew exactly what to do and when to do it.
saturday night shane was something i havent seen in a while.l.. on that night hes definitely a harder hitter then cotto... cotto seemed to be throwing quick arm punch combinations... but shane was really turning his torso and throwing everything into his punches.. plus cotto was retreating and going off his back foot when throwing punches, shane was lunging forward with that over hand right and those body shots... definitely shane for me
This is the answer...
Shane put himself in position where he wasn't punching off of his back foot. He was putting ALL of his weight into every punch he threw Cotto wasn't. And while its clear who hurt Margarito more, Tony's face looked much worse after the Cotto fight...
Now, I think they've got around the same power, but using the Tony fight to say Shane punches harder isn't entirely accurate IMO. I think they've got about the same pop, but Shane being a smarter fighter, puts himself in position to where he gets more leverage on his punches.
