boxing for a beginner
It depends what you're looking to do and how much you're able to afford. If you're doing it for the workout and you're able to swing it, try my club, the Trinity Boxing Club. We charge more than a lot of clubs, but we deliver more as well. We cater primarily to a white collar crowd. If you're looking to compete, log on to www.usaboxingmetro.com for a list of clubs in the city. USA Boxing does a great job with the amateur program in NY, and they can help you find the gym that's right for you.
I am new to NYC and i am looking to take up boxing i was wondering if anybody could recommend any good boxing gyms for beginners in manhattan.
Thanks
word.. gleasons is alot of money.. at my PAL the head trainer works with me on my technique for about an hour every night even after the other trainers worked with me on the pads and the bags.. becuz i make sure im the last one to leave.. all u gotta do at a PAL is show u are dedicated and they dedicate to you
the PAL is free and the city PALs have just as many golden gloves finalists as gleasons every year.. and when the trainer is free they have love for the game and training fighters is what they really love to do .. not for a paycheck so u know they dont mind working with you
I've never paid a trainer and the most I've paid for a gym was $50 (once, and never again) and I can beat people up. If you're a n00b and you're paying out your butt to learn, you're wasting your money.

Gleasons is damn expensive. To pay for a trainer is almost like paying rent. You might as well go to a PAL or local gym and get noticed in sparring and get a trainer that way.
I agree. I mean if you're just starting out you got a LOT to learn and if you were to go right in and spar its very likely you will get hurt. I mean, if you got the money and want to learn some stuff, go for it. Personally I don't have money and time to spare on that BS with all the expenses I already have. I can go into a gym and throw some straight punches. I'd rather train by myself and get to spar a little bit than pay a trainer obscene amounts of money.
At my old gym I just worked out on my own, this old guy would show me some stuff while he was working out too, and then I would just randomly spar with people that were in the gym. That's when the trainer would tell me what I was doing wrong and I'd do my best to work on it on my own. The new gym I went to sucked a lot. No one was there except weight lifters. When I would try and go in the ring with one of my buddies they used to yell at us every time and say we couldn't spar unless a trainer was around (there was never a trainer around when I went either). That would piss me off so much. It's hard to find a good gym man...

blimey the gyms over in the states are expensive.
In my gym we paid £2 a session... This is just for overhead costs. Non-Profit. I didnt think many boxing gyms made profit.
That sounds about right lol. I went to another gym after that too a few times in NJ but I forgot where it was. A few of the fighters in there were competing in the Diamond Gloves, which I went to as well. I Actually met Lou Duva there and got his autograph!
Lou Duva is all over the place in the Paterson area. You were probably at Joe Griers or one of the PALs there. Jersey and NY have the best amateur programs I've seen, I've never seen guys with 200+ amateur fights as frequently as there.

Honestly I'm not sure. I should have paid closer attention when I went. My uncle drove so I had no idea where I was since I'm not from NJ. It was pretty much a sweat-box, hot as hell, with some serious people in it. I liked it a lot. I wish there were some close by where I live man, every gym I look at is like $100+ a month. It sucks.
It looked old, run down, smelled like stale urine and sweat and had one raggety ring at the bottom of a staircase?
Hell yeah, that's where I learned how to box when I was younger! You know it's only $10 bucks a year or something, they have no overhead because they're a non-profit organization. Have you gone to the renovated one or the old one on 9th street?

Hey I think I've been there a few times with my uncle! They told me to come by more often so that I can spar but its so damned far from Queens that I can't make the drive out there very often. Sucks, as it is very cheap and you can get a great workout.

I have never seen a boxing gym that looks like a gym from the outside.
Union City Boxing in NJ is in the back of a police station, next to Public Works.

I was goin to a gym out in Freeport-Long Island,NY. Plan to start goin bac out there soon. Its mainly a gym for teens and youngins tho. Bout 25-30 mins from Rosedale Queens, NY(don't kno wat part of NYC ur from).
Thats the site I used to find 2 gyms so far. I live in Queens so I used to go to Envy Us Boxing and Fitness in Whitestone, but they closed down over some steriod scandal BS. Sucked so much man I loved that gym! I get so sad when I think about it. Only paid $33 a month. I found another gym in Ridgewood but they charge $50 a month and I never found any sparing there which sucked and I couldn't use the weights at all, otherwise I'd have to spend like another $30. I'm gonna start looking for another one soon.
There are tons in Manhattan, some are really expensive though. But if you can, I'd join a PAL. They are definitely the cheapest and you can get a really good workout and sparring. Definitely look at that website.
around $70/mo for training only, but a great group of trainers who offer very reasonable rates ($25-45/1-1.5 hr workout) depending on who you pick. I know, this isn't for anyone on welfare or unemployed.
That is a lot of money. The pal is free And my trainer been doing it since the 70s with over 30 golden gloves champs . I go every day for 3 hours. So I'd be spending My rent money on a trainer lol
Go to CHURCH STREET BOXING and talk to JUSTIN...he's the owner and a friend of mine, tell him I recommended his gym to you. It's the gym where Tito, RJ etc etc usually go to train when they are in town....NICE gym... two rings etc...it's in lower Manhattan...down near where the WTC used to be...
C'mon, everyone knows John doesn't have any friends.
