Why did he perform worse? I'm not saying he didn't use them but Oscar outlanded him by what 100 punches according to Compubox (i can't remember the punch stats exactly)
He outlanded DLH in the first fight and won deservedly the 2nd fight was close IMO Oscar should have won but it begs the question at the very top level of the sport (against the elite) do Roids' really help that much?
Mosley doesn't even believe it helped him, citing the fact that so many believed that De La Hoya deserved the decision in the fight.
"If that stuff is supposed to help, it didn't do nothing," he said. "It hurt me. It was a close fight and I got the decision."
Mosley said when he fought De La Hoya the first time, in June 2000, he hadn't used anything and won more easily.
"So, to me, it really hurt me a little bit," Mosley said.

Mosley struggled, but again, DLH fought a better fight than the first time around. DLH was more adjusted to 154 and Mosley hadn't been fighting well at the time.
What is Mosley suppsed to say? "Yeah, I fought better when I won after using steroids and EPO".
Possibly. I always thought Holyfield was a better fighter when he was lighter, around 190-205 lbs.
I believe it may have gone as follows.
Holyfield fights Bowe and decides to mix it up with the bigger man and he loses the fight. Holyfield reflects on the defeat and realizes he lost, because he was just not big enough. Holyfield used some type of steroid to bulk himself up a bit more for the second fight and he wins the fight.
Holyfield fights Michael Moorer loses and shows signs of side effects from steroid use. Hoyfield fight Bowe 3 more classic side effects of a steroid user contracting hepatitis.
I believe steroids caught up with Holyfield in the Bowe 3 and Moorer 1 fight.

I've noticed that whenever boxers get caught from steroid-use, they usually lost the fight that they used steroids in or performed worse than usual.
Fernando Vargas against ODLH he lost that fight and that was the fight he used the roids for....Lefty

Actually not so much in boxing but in MMA for example. I can only recall one or two occasions where a MMA fighter who was caught from steroid-use actually benefited from it (as in winning the fight, obviously it helped them in training).
Even in boxing Toney and Batchelder both looked terrible against each other (both caught from steroid-use), Vargas was KO'd by DLH, Cruz Carbajal lost to Mabuza, also Holyfield was on a losing streak when rumours came out that he had ordered steroids/HGH as 'Evan Fields'.

It's why boxing is such a fantastic, skillful sport. You can't just beef yourself up (artificially at that) and expect to dominate, or even improve really. Mosley made a stupid mistake that he won't repeat again. He made the right move recently grabbing a new trainer and working on technique rather than brute force.

De La Hoya fought a smarter fight than the first time around.
Mosley also hadn't won a fight in over two years, and didn't appear to be fighting with as much confidence (at least not in the Forrest rematch) as usual.
Thread Stealer nailed it right there!
Dela Hoya used the jab consistently and let Mosley lead off this time, so he could have opportunity to counter.
I think he either built up too much muscle or fell in love with his power because there was a stint in his career where he went 1 punch crazy, he'd just throw a big power punch and reload, those quick flurries we saw against Margarito weren't there for a while and DLH fought a better fight the second time around.
Was Floyd Mayweather Sr. Oscar's trainer around the time of the 2nd match? If so, that could have been a major factor in as to why Oscar performed better in that match than the 1st one.

What comes in my mind is that Oscar got the speed at that time... And Mosley not performed worst at that fight...
