Murder of brother
On October 17, 2004, the body of Max's brother Sam was found next to a hammer in his Hollywood apartment. As a result of the ensuing investigation, former boxer James Butler was arrested and charged with Sam's murder. He later confessed to the murder and was given a 29 year sentence.
When Adam Carolla's manager was inviting Kellerman to the premiere of his new boxing film, The Hammer, he did not know that Sam Kellerman's murder was committed by Butler, who was known as "The Harlem Hammer".
:pat:
I'd like to add that although what James Butler did to Sam Kellerman was inexcusable; for those who don't know, the man had a long history of mental illness and was not on his medication at the time of the incident... He was actually trying to get committed into a ward because I believe he knew he couldn't control himself without the meds. Sam knew this when he took him in but did so out of a rare sense of kindness & humanity that most people don't understand. May he rest in peace... James though was visibly disturbed, I remember hanging out with him and heads wouldn't joke with him because he'd be laughing one minute and snapped the next. His former trainer nicknamed me James Butler Jr because he said we threw our right hands the same. Me and duke trained together when he got out for punching the Grant kid (he can't handle frustration) and he gave me good boxing pointers. I will say however, people knew not to call me James Butler Jr in front of him because his illness was well known in NYC boxing circles. Sam's death is a horrible tragedy but sometimes it pays to take a step back and let prudence dictate your actions when it comes to helping people... btw, I don't allow people to call me James Jr. anymore either...
Here's a better insight on the situation.......
The Kellerman brothers had known Butler for a number of years, having introduced by trainer Alexander Newbold, who worked with both Butler and the Kellermans at Gleason's Gym. A friednship developed and the fighter appeared with them in a rap video called ''Rumble Young Man Rumble''
Sam Kellerman stuck by Butler, even after he was jailed for assaulting Grant, visiting the boxer while he was in prision and writing a sympathetic column about him for foxsports.net. Therefore, it wasn't to surprising that when the down on his luck boxer needed a place to live, Sam, an aspiring actor and freelance sportswriter, allowed Butler to stay with him at his Hollywood apartment.
Butler had told Kellerman that he had a bout scheduled in Californa, but according to the Californa Athletic Commission, Butler did not have a boxing license in the state.
Los Angeles police beleive that Butler killed Kellerman on October 12 2004, by striking him at the back of the head with a hammer, and then set fire to Kellerman's apartment in a attempt to cover the crime. Friends of the Kellermans suspect that the killing was trigered by an argument over when Butler was going to move out of Kellermans apartment.
''Though it would seem that Sam's fate suggest that no good deed goes unpunished, Max Kellermen told the New York Post, ''Sam's life did not suggest that at all. It was full of good deeds. Sam believed that life came with the responsibility of empathy and kindness''
Several emebers of the boxing world, including Iran Barkley, Aaron Davis, promoter Lou Dibella and manager Frank Russo, attented Kelmerman's funeral.
It scary how much power boxers have without gloves...
I remember when this first happened. What a joke thread title, "Max Kellerman has a dead brother?".
Anyways, rest in peace Sam, it's disturbing that Butler used a hammer considering his nickname. Props to Max for being strong throughout it, that would be horrible to lose a brother. If somebody ever hurt my brother they'd need more then luck on their side to even make trial.

Yeah this story was crazy because of what everyone said above. The Kellerman's knew and liked Butler. Sam took the Hammer in and was actually killed by a Hammer. One thing no one has said and that sticks out in my head the most is that Butler was the guy who broke another guys jaw after the fight not too long before this. If there was one thing that Butler could do, it was punch. He had mad power. After he clearly lost a tough fight and "after" his trainers had already cut off his gloves, he went to shake hands with his opponent and during the handshake he yoked the guy in and struck him with his right non gloved hand and all you saw was blood pouring down from the guys jaw.
Now I know people on here did cover that somewhat but they thing I was talking about was what happened after this. The announcers including Teddy Atlas were irate and all the media killed him. 99.9% of the people said that Butler was a thug that should never ever be allowed to fight again after that and he's a discrace but who came to his defense? Max Kellerman. Max was on FNF's full time at that point and he's probably the sole reason why Butler was allowed to fight again. Max thought what Butler did was downright horrible but he said that Butler was a good guy who came up rough and he doesnt think that they should take away his whole lively hood after 1 mistake, although it was a bad one. Max was so good at defending him that I remember he actually made alot of others change there minds and want to give him a 2nd shot, including Atlas.
I think Butler ended up with like a 6month or year long suspension and came back. He also did an interview on FNF's after that with Max and apologized for the incident. That was the thing I thought about the most after the murder. How Max was the only guy who defended this cat and saved his boxing life and soon after the guy kills his brother? It was the saddest thing ever
Damn TheManchine, I have been looking all over for that pic in your sig, I was going to put that in either my avatar or sig. Its crazy that those three guys Cus, Floyd, and Jose are all dead now. :( I always wondered what kind of relationship did Mike have with Floyd and Jose.
As for Kellerman boys, they had skills. I knew they used to rap but I never actually saw their video before til now. Anybody who says that they are wack, I dare you to compare that to the garbage rap that is out there now. Hel there isn't even rapping anymore, everyone wantsto be a singer now.
I posted an interview in this thread where Jose Torres talks a little about Mike:

Don't know why every body is hating that was far from wack I knew max was a hip hop head but I didn't know he spit back in the day. this seems like it might of dropped around 96-98 before every rapper was a drug dealer and a gangster that shit was raw I like max even more. Not saying it was the sickest shit I heard but any real emcee knows that shit wasn't wack
well he's good enough to make it into the jewish rapper hall of fame that's for sure
...and dude is still walkin around free?
SHIT...that ****er would've been found and killed within hours if it were me.
No, Butler is in jail. He was sentenced to 29 years.
And yes badboypeenoy, that's Butler.
I don't think he ever gave a reason. But he was a bipolar, insane, ex boxer who assaulted a man for no reason after a bout. I think that about covers it.

I had no idea he struck Sam in the head with the hammer 32 times. I knew Butler was a derranged psycho before anyway, but 32 times? I hope he gets raped in prison every day for the rest of his pathetic life.
