no discussion about it, calzaghe would have toyed with toney in there. calzaghe has footwork and handspeed, toney's kryptonite.
oh yehh.
"He should lose the flab and fight me, that's if they can get him out of his training camp of McDonalds."
Calzaghe already won the war of words
the two southpaws that Toney fought that came to mind are Michael Nunn and Vassily Jirov. Nunn was a fantastic boxer, Jirov threw a huge amount of punches and was a nasty strong body puncher.
Toney knocked out Nunn, almost knocked out Jirov in the 12th.
the two counterpunchers that Calzaghe fought that come to mind are Robin Reid and Hopkins. overall, theyre probebly the most comparable fighters to James Toney that Calzaghe fought.
Calzaghe went to controversial split decisions with both of them. I had him losing the Reid fight, winning the Hopkins one by 1 point.
so...what does that tell you?
Good fight though, cos workrate and adaptibiltiy to the other guy's style is Calzaghes MO as well...
It would have been a helluva fight, but I think Toney had too much counterpunching abilities for Calzaghe and a ridiculously good chin. Even if you win a round on workrate, knockdowns make rounds 10-8.
Hopkins is a better fighter at 43 than when he was 26 years old and Zaghe used to be a better fighter at younger age, so Zaghe beats Hopkins at anytime and the same goes for Toney. Roy Jones is a different story, but you never know that's why they fight.
Hopkins at 26 had less than 20 fights and had barely started fighting 10rounders.
Hopkins best is widely regarded to be between Johnson 97 and Tito 2001. Where he was much better than at 43... 'Zaghe beats Hopkins' at anytime he is just a dream.
Toney was busy being Cruiserweight champion and moving up t HW while calzaghe piled up useless defenses of his trap, more dreaming from you.
As for Jones, Calzaghe even said Jones was too much for him. Someone has a link to the interview in his sig.

No one wins the war of words with Toney... If you are one of the lucky ones able to translate his language... you realize he is pretty damn funny.
Yeah, all of boxing is about at what time one guy gets the other guy in the ring. Happily sometimes thy're both at the same point - but more often than not... they're not.
that means calz wont fight toney in his prime so this whole thread is useless?

That's the trouble with Toney. Excellent on his day, but far far too often it wasn't his day. Perennially weight-drained or over-weight, and a career filled with lacklustre showings, chances are Calzaghe would have caught him on one of those off days. But best vs best, it's hard to choose. I see a close-ish decision either way.
Indeed, he was very erratic, especially in the lower weight classes where he'd look great in 1 fight then look horrible in the next.
Prime Toney would have beaten prime Calzaghe if he showed up focused and in shape.

You should never try to "get" this site or the large number of ****wits on it.
Yeah, I remember being keyed up after the Hatton/Mayweather fight. I posted for opinions but they were maaad fanboy.

seriously, james walks through whatever slaps calz windmills and puts the hurt on calz.
Neither guy would "destroy" or "annihilate" or "kill" or "**** up" the other. Most likely a very close fight where the losing side would bitch about the decision
Agree, that's what I don't get about this site.

It would have definitely been a very interesting and good fight, I just see Toney coming out on top.

Did he say that in front of cameras? I asked him who was the best he trained when i went to see Pac train at wild card, and he said Toney in that occasion too. Another shocking thing is he also trained Hopkins.
I read that from a written account of a press conference before the DLH fight, it'll be out there somewhere.
Counterpunching is the key for Toney, throughout his career Calzaghe has been open to counter right hands which is Toney's best punch and Toney had a pretty high workrate himself, he'd throw 70 to 80 punches a round when he was in shape, he had no problem dealing with workrate either, it just gives him more opportunities to counterpunch, Toney is also a very smart and adaptable boxer, if Calzaghe manages to neutralize Toney's right hand somehow (which I don't think he would), Toney would adapt himself.
