An old article, but pretty interesting to here the verbals between them
Super middleweight king Joe Calzaghe wants to fight former three-weight world champion James Toney at Cardiff's Millenium Stadium on 8 July.
Calzaghe dismantled Jeff Lacy to add the IBF belt to his WBO title, a fight Toney said Calzaghe was sure to lose.
"Toney fancied Lacy's chances so I would love to see how he would get on with me," said Calzaghe, 33.
"He should lose the flab and fight me. But I don't think anyone can drag him out of his training camp at McDonalds."
James Toney: The Real Bling
Calzaghe is bristling after Toney told BBC Sport that Lacy would "destroy" Calzaghe at the MEN Arena.
I would love to kick Toney's behind now because I just missed out on doing it in the '90s when I was coming through
Joe Calzaghe
Toney also said: "Calzaghe never did anything. He beat Chris Eubank nine years ago, but what has he done since then? He's a joke."
Toney, 37, failed to win the WBC heavyweight crown on Saturday after a disappointing draw with Hasim Rahman.
He held the IBF middleweight and super middleweight title in the 1990s before moving up to win the cruiserweight crown.
However, a fight with Calzaghe is unlikely to happen as Toney scaled 236lb against Rahman and would have to lose almost 70lb to make the super middleweight limit.
"I would love to kick his behind now because I just missed out on doing it in the '90s when I was coming through," added Calzaghe.
Former four-weight world champion Roy Jones Jr, who beat Toney in 1994, has already said he would like to fight Calzaghe.
Let us not forget that Nigel Benn beat Barkley too... and more convincingly than Toney...
I dont know about that. I know it was the first round, but that was only due to the three knockdown rule, Barkley looked like he could have kept going. and he also hurt Benn pretty badly in the first.
if that would have continued, that would have been the brawl to end all brawls. hate that 3 knockdown rule.
P.S. anyone see toney and hopkins facing off at a catchweight of 180 or something like that.
i dont see zaghe facing toney anytime soon, hopkins however is someone who can pack on the muscle and move up in weight.
its a shame that they never faced off at MW.
calzaghe at his prime was not a murderous puncher - calzaghes prime was between the fights with veit and bika. after that his handspeed has declined slightly but is still extremely respectable.
following match ups are all prime for prime
calzaghe vs hopkins - CALZAGHE BY UD OR SD
calzaghe vs toney - TONEY BY SD
calzaghe vs RJJ - CALZAGHE BY UD
i know some ppl will be raising a few eyebrows at me picking calzaghe over RJJ but thats how i see it.
imo calzaghes krytponite is toney his counter punching skills are simply phenomenal, when he says that he was born to fight he couldn't be more right.
but calzaghe being calzaghe is hard to pick against. he is a spolier and always finds a way to win even it isn't pretty he manages to grind it out and pull out the W.
that was two brawlers with freaksih power going head to head, it was always going to be an early KO
toney is a slick counterpuncher who dominated barkley steadily for 10 rounds before putting him away
Fair enough. But you can't base a good performance on beating Barkley. It's impossible to imagine Benn KOing Calzaghe (or Toney for that matter).
"He should lose the flab and fight me. But I don't think anyone can drag him out of his training camp at McDonalds."

lol the toney that beat barkley at super middleweight....versus calzaghe
holy shit, toney might have killed him, the right hand counter is james' money shot and calzaghe is very vulnerable to that punch, calzaghe would never hit james clean, landing mainly on the elbows, shoulders and gloves the only way he could win is if an idiot judge didnt know what the target area was and counted joes ineffective slaps that land on toneys gloves and arms, but the fight wouldnt go the distance most likely, if a 43 yr old hopkins can drop joe a prime toney would have KO'd him easily, i think toney knocks him out mid or late in the fight
Calzaghe only turned pro in the year Toney beat Iran. 1997 Calzaghe would have gave the Toney that lost to Griffin all kinds of trouble.
Your just a fan boy.
