Dude.... seriously..... come on.
Anyone who is truly and seriously picking Calzaghe needs to learn a whole lot about boxing history.
And the "styles make fights" argument is hilarious in this instants.
I agree. SRR is in my and id have to say most boxing fans opinion the greatest fighter of all time. Joe is great at throwing punches in bunches, but SRR had speed, power, and was the defenition of the SWEET SCIENCE. Joe does not deserve to be his sparring partner or ever be mentioned in the same sentece as him.
SRR-175wins, 108 by way of.... all 15 round fights.
Joe-46wins, 32 by way of..... most 12 round fights.
Great fight since Calzaghe fights at a heavier weight. Pound for pound, its not close and a terrible matchup for Calzaghe. He'd run right into Ray's punches.
Head to head at 168, I'll give it to Robinson by decision or possibly even late stoppage. He had tendency to go to war but he has the chin and stamina to stand up to Calzaghe if needed.
LOL......
This is a very funny thread.
Max Kellerman would say 100 times during the fight how Ray Robinson is actually a corpse, then Calzaghe fans will come out sayin how biased Kellerman is against European fighters, and how he never gives Calzaghe credit when fighting American fighters.
Don't forget how the British Fans will be insisting Calzaghe is something special since he beat Lacy. If you disagree you are a Fat Yank and a "Hater", not taking any consideratio most of the guys who don't rate Calzaghe are Brits.
no calzaghe would wait until he's dead. fight has just been signed for april in wales.
LOL......

:lame:
right on cue,the mere mention of his name and cuntface daggum slides out from under his rock with another unfunny remark!
The best thing about it is that he probably enjoys it fulltime himself. He's like Flawless... Even though Flawless has gotten a little better after the beat-down-thread. 56-2(1).
Come on. Are you that biased??
Calzaghe would wait until he was 43.

"Moyer had Robinson in trouble in the third, fifth, ninth, and tenth rounds..He set a fast pace from the start, shook off the best punches Robinson was able to toss at him, and belabored the one-time great with a steady two-handed bombardment to the head and body." (The Ring, April 1962, page 42)
sounds like something calzaghe would do
styles make fights....of course this does not mean he would get thru robinsons resume undefeated
Yeah, cause Robinson was really close to his prime at that point:lame:
Robinson was 41 years old and had 160+ fights.
I hate how Sugar Ray Robinson has this untouchable stigma.
Yes, compared to the era he fought in, he is without a doubt the greatest boxer that has ever lived. However, advances in technology and breakthroughs in biochemistry has sparked the evolution of the athlete to accelerate at a rapid pace.
Athletes today are faster, stronger, more agile and more coordinated than the athlete of the 1950's. Consider this: The fastest woman today is able to run faster than the fastest man could in 1950.
Sugar Ray Robinson would have an awful time dealing with the speed, power and sheer athletecism with some of the fighters today. If Jake "Womanizing Booze Hound, Chain Smoker" LaMatta could manage to beat Robinson (albeit just once), A prime Joe Calzaghe would give Robinson fits. A Prime Roy Jones probably blows Robinson out of the water.
Much less was discovered and known about boxing over half a century ago. When you deduce that we simply have the past to learn from, then it's only logical that more has been discovered and learned about boxing today.
Robinson is great because he was so ahead of his time. Robinson has contributed more to modern boxing than any other fighter in history. It's just that fighters today have had a chance to absorb it, scrutinize it, test it, refine it and improve it. Which is why I always measure fighters against their own eras when gauging their greatness.
He was not unbeatable, not even in his own era. He sure as hell wouldn't be unbeatable in today's era.
Your exactly right however just saying the newer the better really takes the fun out of it all am I right? For me to compare fighters from different eras you have to take away all of that and put them on equal grounds. Consider if Robinson was put into todays era with the same training, new found knowledge, ect ect . Thats is how I take these type of fights into consideration. Because just saying Tyson would beat Ali because he was in a later generation doesn't make it entirely so, don't you agree? Either way I am not trying to argue or disagree(as I said at first I was in agreement with you statement), just trying to tell you how I view these things because it makes it more fun and challenging to think about.
I don't know, SSR is considered one of the p4p boxers, and had an illustrious career...
But Joe beat Lacy..
Tough to call..:?!::rolleyes:

In all seriousness, in my opinion, SRR, Early stoppage
:notworthy ROFL.
You pretty much nailed the tone of some of these comments. One guy in here even acted like a boxing expert saying that Robinson wasn't a welterweight and that he fought at jr.middleweight.
He said it like he meant it too.
Here it is:

calzaghe would get KNOCK THE F.UCK out. If a 43 year and a 40 year old droped Calzaghe, imagine what a prime Sugar Ray Robinson would do to himA prime Sugar Ray was a WW.A lot smaller than Joe,fight would never happen.

I often wonder why so many people are so bothered by Calzaghe, to the extent they genuinely hate the guy. Is it because he's not American, or because he's beaten every great American hope put in front of him? Is it because he left the self-proclaimed "Executioner" crawling around on his hands and knees after imaginary low blows, trying to wangle a points deduction like some second rate club fighter?
Unlike many of his peers, he doesn't use women as punchbags. He doesn't claim to be greater than the likes of Ali and Robinson. He doesn't give X-rated press conferences, take steroids, get into scraps with the police, or have a massive entourage full of leeches and hangers-on. Just a solid boxer who's made a lot of money and had a fine career.
I think most people have issues with his fans on here, but I'm not entirely sure I don't dislike Joe, in fact I like his fights for the most part.
