I'm a pretty new poster on the board and for the most part I really think that a lot of you are very knowledgeable and have a lot of passion for the sport of boxing but why doesn't this same love carry over to MMA? So I wanted to ask you guys a couple of questions that might help me figure out how so many of you are just so Anti-fun?
1. Does boxing have to be the more popular of the two sports for you to actually enjoy it?
2. Why are so many of you so insecure about you sexuality that you have to compare grappling with Homosexual sex?
3. Im sure a lot of you like other sports like football, baseball. and basketball so why doesn't the same hate you have for MMA transfer over to these sports.
4. How can you deny yourself endless forms of combat and tons of entertaining matchups in both sports? In january alone I get to watch 5 major title fights since I'm a big fan of both sports while all of you MMA haters get a whole two title fights.
5. Why do you hate fun and multiple forms of entertainment?
All I ask is that if you answer my questions you will at least put the same effort into them that you put into the boxing threads on this message board.
The problem is, by the time most of the Pride fighters came over, a good number of 'em were already past their best years ie Dan Henderson, Noguiera, Cro Cop(overrated in my opinion), Wanderlei Silva. And for anyone that thought that every single Pride fighter that went to the UFC was gonna have great success, well, they don't know sh*t.
Anyway, Noguiera in his prime was the sh*t. Do you really think that the version of Frank Mir that defeated Nog would done the same against a Prime Nog?
Guess who the UFC rates as its #1 P4P fighter, it's a former Pride fighter, Anderson Silva(still undefeated in the UFC). Lyoto has done well so far, Rampage is still very much a threat and I can see him defeating Evans.
My point is you can't say Pride was great and the UFC is bar fighters gassing in 1 round when in fact many of the Pride talent has gassed themselves here.
yes Im aware Nog is well past his prime and would have killed Mir. Wanderlei actually been past his prime even at the end of his pride days.
Theres just a lot of smoke and mirrors with Pride. Some great talent in their but people are smoking crack when they act like the UFC is terrible and Pride was amazing. I admit i even enjoyed Pride more but I realize they are both MMA promoters and held a lot of great talent. UFC was a more realistic promoter and held more consistent talent. Hence less freak shows, less Japanese fighters(Sorry guys but Japanese fighters are overrated big time...especially 170lbs+)
Also there was no testing in Pride. So its only logical to assume that a good amount of steroids where used with fighters(Yes its logical to assume that because a lot of fighters get busted where there is testing(UFC, Affliction)....so in an environment without testing its only logical to assume that the number is much higher) Im not saying every fighter did but lets not be stupid and pretend it wasnt there
Okay MMA had 7 of the top 10 PPVs but right under that would be Pac/Marquez and Cotto/Marg. MMA had 7 of the top 12, boxing 4 of the top 12. Its not that huge of a landslide. If you want to completely disregard WWE's ppv you have to do that from the Brock fight. That fight doesnt do anywhere close to a mil without the WWE fans. Straight up MMA events do about 400,000 a ppv and boxing is in the 300ish. Its pretty even when you look at averages.
Actually thats even off. That list doesn't include UFC 92 12/27/2008 which is reported to have done over 1 million buys without Lesnar. Either way the whole Lesnar argument is stupid because hes a MMA fighter now and is signed with the UFC. ...So he will continue to draw. Its just like arguing boxing can't draw shit without De La Hoya. Also MMA has done over 1 million before without Lesnar
People have to realize this is where the UFC has ever advantage in the book. Theirs no way any boxing promoter can compete with the UFC for getting consistent high PPVs right now because simply boxing is setup completely different than MMA. This is the UFCs advantage...they own 80% of the talent out there, they have less weight classes, don't deal with 4 belts for each class, they can promote solid cards on a consistent basis on ****e. Boxing is event to event with different promoters essentially just focusing on a main event. Its the same reason why main event Boxers get paid much more $$$
Yeah, I was kidding. Is "WrestleMania" always on every years top PPV sales list? I remember watching that stuff when I was a kid, I had no idea it was still so popular.
What i cant believe is how grown ass men still go crazy over wrestling. It was cool when you was a kid, because back then we thought it was real.
Technically #3 is a boxing event, everybody bought it to see Floyd move up to 40-0 against that giant Big Show dude. ;)
Kidding right? LOL. Floyd/Bigshow wasnt even the main event. On top of that, it did fewer sales than the previous years Wrestlemania.
It's comments like this that really piss me off.....
It's from youtube, so I can't be too mad, all things considered.
But what top 15 PPVS? Of all time, or last year, in the last 3 years, 5 years? What? And where are the numbers?
Basically people who talk out their ass about either sport piss me off. Period.
Top 10 PPV's for 2008
1. Boxing: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao, Dec. 6, 1,250,000
2. UFC: Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture, Nov. 15, 1,010,000
3. Wrestling: WrestleMania, Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Paul "Big Show" Wight, March 30, 670,000
4. UFC: Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch/Lesnar vs. Heath Herring, Aug. 9, 625,000
5. UFC: Lesnar vs. Frank Mir, Feb. 2, 600,000
6. UFC: Quinton Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin, July 5, 540,000
7. UFC: St. Pierre vs. Matt Serra, April 19, 530,000
8. Boxing: Felix Trinidad vs. Roy Jones Jr., Jan. 19, 500,000
9. UFC: Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans, Sept. 6, 480,000
10. UFC: B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk/Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida, May 24, 475,000
I used to watch MMA when Pride was on. UFC is shit. Pride had some good fights and fighters.
Remember Bob Sapp vs Nogueria?... That fight was mad. Cant believe how Nogueria won!
I hate grappling simple as that, I can't watch it. So I don't watch MMA because a large majority end up on the floor and some of the lesser "strikers" look terrible when punching.
I enjoy watching Anderson Silva but other than that I can't see the appeal.
MMA has bored me most times I have watched it, but i can almost always find interest in a boxing match. I don't doubt that mma fighters are great athletes but for the most part I can't get into it.
Yes exactly my thoughts. Pride was the shit and had exciting fights. UFC is just two unconditioned bar brawlers trying to land a superman punch. Seriously though they ALL gas after about 3 minutes.
Wow what a joke post... the irony here is the guys that are gassing the most are the fighters who are coming over from Pride. Shogun, Coleman, Nog and Paulo Filho ring a bell?
On top of this all Pride was notorious for putting on freak show matches. Giant Silva anyone?

Which one of the UFC champions are fat barroom Brawlers.
I've gotta say If I wasn't introduced to MMA during the Pride days I wouldn't enjoy the sport as much as I do now. Pride really knew how to put on a show.

I think this whole MMA/Boxing rivalry shit is all Dana's doing.
Yeah part of it is Dana....but I think the rivalry is just a pretty natural thing because theres plenty of stupidity from both sides(Boxing and MMA)
On one end you have the countless boxing dopes who only consider using ones fists as the only effective means of offense in a MMA fight and therefore rip MMA fighters because of the lousy boxing. Hence the logic of a boxer can just step into a MMA fight and have great success because a boxer has better boxing. They refused to acknowledge every other aspect of MMA(Kicking, elbows, grappling, submissions...)
Other end is MMA fan boys who keep yelling boxing is dead when as infact its still very alive and plenty of money in it.
Some people in this thread have some very logical reasons why they find faults with MMA. Athletes are still on a whole inferior to boxing...its true but again we are talking about a brand new sport. Guys will be getting better. Brock Lesnar is a perfect example. Heres a case when you get a top level athlete at HW who is bigger than everyone. Basically Lesnar is exposing the weakness of the HW division. Huge athletic fighters are just not in MMA...not many in boxing now either. Historically the top HWs are all under 240lbs and here we get a guy coming in at 275-280 lbs
Hell I don't know if anyone caught inside MMA on HDNET a month ago but had Frank Shamrock on.....guess what Shamrock says he doesnt watch MMA at all and only watches boxing. He also went on to say the striking in MMA was terrible and should be much farther along then it is now. He basically said few fighters striking is on a good level(He mentioned Arlovski as one of those guys)
Well one thing that pisses me off about it more than anything is threads like these, because MMA fans like to tell us how popular MMA is and how Boxing is dying, yet all they ever do is piggy back off Boxing to get some notoriety which imo tells you all you need to know about MMA as a sport.
When did I ever say Boxing was dying??
And please I would really like to know how MMA piggy backs off boxing??
Real men fight with their hands?? Hahaha so what happens in a fight when a kickboxer kicks his head off and he's not used to defending that?? Or somebody chokes him out within 5 seconds??
MMA=Fighting
Boxing=Boxing
Both are great. To disrespect either one is ignorance and insecurity.

I used to like it back in the day when you'd have like a 500 pounds sumo vs a 160 pound kick boxer and crazy shit like that. It was truly a "mixed martial arts."
Now everyone trains to be the same type of fighter - ok striking skills with good ground work, etc.
It just lost its luster to me and most of the time i find the fights too boring or too quick.
just my opinion.
you might like some of old Pride events...they would have open weight tournaments...big dudes fighting small dudes...
I think MMA is good for boxing...boxing needed something nipping at their heels, some sort of direct competition...I was a bit skeptical of MMA at first, but now as I watch more and more of it....I'm a big fan...it will never be bigger than boxing though...the simple mechanics of two guys ONLY punching each other will always be too universal for MMA to overcome...just like soccer is compared to every other sport from a world wide aspect...a ball and your feet will always be more popular than every other sport....
