who is the most fundamental boxer?
you know hands up, chins down, perfect stance, balance, movement, good work of jab, defense, counter, etc...
ive been watching alot of fights lately and i think bernard hopkins is probably the most fundamental boxer in the 90s and this era. (although he probably will retire soon).
well thats my opinion.
important edit!! :
how the hell can i forget about evander holyfield? wtf man!? i should be punished by the boxing gods right now.
Great choice. I think it's him and Calderon. They are two of the most purest boxers out there.
And to people saying Mayweather's not fundamentally sound. He's a boxing genius and his fundamentals/skills are bar none. Just becasue he can get away with less orthodox methods doesn't take away from his skills.
I think a fundamental boxer fights fundamental and doesn't just have them. That's why I don't understand why Mayweather is the msot mentioned so far.
Ike Quartey was one as well. **** his jab was a cannon, or a BAZOOKA.
EDIT: Antonio Tarver... shoutout.
.
Perhaps Cory Spinks? Slick as hell, and 100% dependent on his jab.

Mayweather. I can't remember a time when I saw him make a mistake defensively and he puts together some punches that you just don't see other fighters pull off against world class fighters.
wow seriously... so much people here think mayweather is a fundmantal boxer.
james toney isnt fundamental. hes a slugger who swings his hooks and does a follow through that leaves him open for a good 2 seconds. in his prime he was fundamental but he still had problems with going all out and not being smart.
winky wright is fundamental with his defense but if you look at his stance his back foot is flat and pointed to the side instead of forward.
pernell whitaker is NOT FUNDAMENTAL! hes like rjj except hes better at defense and has less power.
ricardo lopez is one of the most fundamental boxer but sadly hes not in this era.
i still cant believe holyfield isnt mentioned here. he is still fighting. and he deserved that win against valuev.
Floyd may have athleticism but he has excellent fundamentals, he's almost a cross of RJJ and Hopkins
Where's the jab?
I know he has a damn good one, I've seen it... in SOME of his fights.
He doesn't fight fundamental all the time.
I don't get how everyone keeps saying Mayweather.
That guy goes rounds without jabbing. That is clearly not the textbook way to fight. Like Jones, he is better than the textbook... he can break the rules and take shortcuts because of his athleticism.
Hopkins was not very jab oriented either...
Calderon makes sense here.
Perhaps Cory Spinks? Slick as hell, and 100% dependent on his jab.
Kessler, Pavlik, Forrest, etc. all were very fundamentally sound.
Floyd may have athleticism but he has excellent fundamentals, he's almost a cross of RJJ and Hopkins
Most certainly not. He's definitely up there with Floyd, Hopkins and Calderon.

I'd probably say Winky Wright honestly.
Hands always up. Everything starts with the jab, decent left hand behind it, right hook to the body when fighting in close, good movement when he wanted to use it (Taylor 12th round).
Can anyone disagree?

i THINK HOPKINS, TRINIDAD HAS VERY GOOD BASIC FUNDAMENTALS. EARLY FLOYD WAS FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND TOO. NOW HE MORE COCKY AND TAKE MORE RISK. BUT I THINK HOPKINS IS 1 OF THE MOST FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND. LENNOX LEWIS WASN'T BAD EITHER, BUT HE DID DROP HIS HANDS AT TIMES.
Absolutely incorrect. If I as a trainer were to tell any boxer to watch a pro, it would be Bernard Hopkins.
Awkward? He keeps his stance almost all the time. In fact he's the only boxer I can name as a pro who keeps his ****ing right hand glued to his chin when he jabs.
Oscar? He's been known to use a swing jab and lead with left hooks. Yeah that's not a good idea to emulate.
You missunderstood, I never said Hopkins was bad in his form, he does some things great. My point is that he also gives very awkward angles and does some things that is very hard to teach and fundamentally sound.
Watch old Oscar, he is text book in his delivery of his punches. Especially the left hook, it's a thing of beauty. It's like watching a great formed shooter hit the jump shot.
Bernard is very good though and has great defense, I just think his level is a 10 and when you are trying to teach young kids to box, I wouldn't start them there.
