I just watched it last night, and...
it made me laugh that everything was all good and fine after Jimmy Braddock won the belt, even though his wife nearly died in terror of Baer, because in his very next fight, Braddock fought the man who holds the #1 spot on The Ring's hardest punchers ever list.
Anyway, was Baer's power that sick or what?
Just to correct, that list is not "hardest punchers ever" but "best punchers", meaning the criteria used were a combination of power, accuracy, etc. I don't think anyone would rank Louis over Jackson, Shavers, Foreman and co. in terms of pure power, but he was judged to be more skillful with what he had.
THANK YOU... I was always so confused by that list. I had no idea how Julian Jackson was 39th... if 38 people in boxing hit harder than him in history, that is just scary.
Baer had a very hard right. What was false about the movie was how they made the 15th round seem like a thriller, when it was really just like every other round in that fight with a poorly prepared Baer being ineffective against the clever Braddock.
Bert Sugar described this bout as one of the worst to watch ever... Braddock didn't do very well, and Baer just showboated all night.

That's a fact Max Bear could really punch. That's the reason why he got so far in Boxing. The film exaggerated it. They made out Bear to be a Bas--rd. Max Bear was a nice guy loved by many.

Baer had a big punch, people at the time rated his right hand as the most powerful ever. He wasn't a precise puncher though, like Joe Louis was, which is why he was picked apart by Louis.
He most certainly wasn't like the movie portrayed although he liked to play the bad guy's role. He was more of a loudmouth like Ali than scary and intimidating like Tyson and Liston were though.
Max Bear could really punch, it's one of the main reasons why he got so far, but like most movies they exagerrated it. And they made out Bear to be a nasty man but it was all lies/ Max Bear was a friendly man who was always joking around and didn't really always take the sport seriously. Bear's family were very upset the way they portrayed him.
that movie made baer out to be a real cunt, he was actually pretty nice from what i heard
yes that really pissed me off about the movie - showed disrespect to Baer and his family

He wasn't that big though. Not by today's standards any way.
Frankie Campbell died after a sustained beating in the corner that would have severely damaged anybody, and the referee and Frankie's corner did nothing about it. After the fight Max went to see Frankie in hospital and made amends with his wife.
The book Cindarella Man is very interesting, Baer was a nice guy who just happened to be involved in two bad evenings. Obviously the film needed to paint him as a bad guy to make it more successful I guess. He wasn't a particularly sickening one punch guy, more the thudding type that will do more damage the longer it goes.
That was sickening how they showed him looking proud that he killed a dude.
He put one of his victim's kids through college I read somewhere. He obviously was not as big of an F as they made him out to be.
Yeah, he was supposedly very affected by the death of his opponent, he was nowhere near as bad a man as the movie made him out to be.
Baer was definitely known as a big puncher but as with all movies, the movie probably exagerrated the fear of his power and Baer was supposedly a much nicer guy than the movie made him out to be.
