It seems as though a fighter can do wonders off HBO or even Showtime, and the masses of boxing fans generally don't hold them in a high regard. However, the second they come onto HBO.. Even if they are just beating a chump, it seems as though they have arrived on the elite boxing scene. Something about fighting on such a well produced channel. The production, the quality of people calling the fight. I really noticed this because I recently found out Chris John, and Daniel Santos are going to possibly be on HBO. Is there any doubt that if they win in an impressive fashion that their careers will immediately be catapulted? I realize this revelation is fairly obvious but, its pretty amazing what HBO can do for your career. Makes you wonder if there are quite a few better fighters who haven't been able to get on HBO who could beat up on a lot of the fighters we talk about most.. Anyone else agree that it is difficult for a fighter to get proper credit till he fights on an HBO card?
The only guy I remember thinking was real good before I ever saw him on HBO was Jermain Taylor on ESPN
I do think for the most part HBO gets it right on their picks. Sometimes it just makes it hard to acknowledge fighters that aren't on their shows.
I agree with you totally; they dominate the sport. Not sure whether that is good or bad though.
There isn't a doubt in my mind, and its not to discredit Chris John cause he's definitely a good fighter. The Chris John Hype-train/bandwagon is gonna get a lot of new members after he appears on HBO. The boxing world is going to really try and make him a big big deal and very quickly.
I don't know if it gives credability from the boxing community but it makes him a bigger draw. HBO is the "Big Show" for boxing, nothing gets better than that.
Once you made HBO, you have made it to the big leagues. Boxing is a business and if you finally make HBO, it means promoters think you can be a draw.
For example, if they put a guy like Brandeis Prescott on an HBO card, he would get tons of buzz and would slowly start showing up on people lightweight top 10 lists. People would assume he's a sick prospect, However Prescott goes and annihilates a Khan off HBo and he's already slipped back into obscurity for the time being. I'm just saying being on HBO skews people's opinions of fighters.

Yes you still have to be good but. I mean Chris John. He was already probably very good. But now that he's going to fight on HBO, people are going to act like he's way better than he was before he fought on HBO. When in reality nothing about him as a fighter has changed. I think there is a bit of an illusion that comes with fighting on HBO. If they started putting Brandeis Prescott on hbo cards, there would be a ton of people on the forums riding him. However when he completely smashes a monster prospect, he gets little to know real fan attention.
You have it right. It probably gives an automatic false credibility to some guys. People see fighters on the big stage and automatically assume them to be the best of the best. That is the problem, not enough stages to prove yourself in the sport.
I wouldn't say it gives you immediate credibility as much as it gives you immediate name recognition. Obviously if you are fighting on and HBO card it means you have something going for you. However, I think it really depends on how you perform when given the opportunity to showcase your skills to a wide audience.

Daniel Santos was on HBO before and his career was pretty stagnant for a while, that being said, HBO is the place to be if you're a fighter now, you get the most exposure there, the most money etc.
I'm not sure about them not getting credit before fighting on HBO though, Kostya Tszyu didn't fight on HBO, Dawson already gets a lot of credit and he's been fighting on Showtime, Tyson was fighting on Showtime in the 90s etc.

Eh? :wank::wank::wank:
Sergio Martinez is a good example of this.
Gary Lockett...less so.
Yeah but I think that's because Locket was brought in as a sacrificial lamb. Exactly Sergio Martinez. Daniel Santos being HBO combined with tales of his close fights with Margarito is enough to generate serious interest for him.
