I'm not talking about who you like the best, I'm talking about who you think is the greatest boxer of all time? Put any bias or personal hatred for boxers aside, think about these points and any others you can think of when deciding:
- Boxing Record
- Quality of Opponents Faced
- Legacy or Impact on the Sport of Boxing
- Technique and Ability
I think these points are most important when analysing who the greatest is but feel free to add your own and I'lll edit the post.
I'm not putting a poll because there would be far to many to limit it to just 10 or however many it allows!
The list so far is:
1. Sugar Ray Robinson - 20
2. Muhammad Ali - 5
3. Floyd Mayweather Jr - 1
= Aaron Pryor - 1
= Pernell Whitaker - 1
= Lennox Lewis - 1
Nobody said what he accomplished was easy, but it doesn't make him the best of all time. Any way you slice it, his skills are not up to par with other great fighter. For example, his infighting abilities don't compare to those of say a James Toney, an Evander Holyfeild, a Roberto Duran, a Bernard Hopkins or even a Riddick Bowe.
Its not his fault, boxing was still a developing art back then. But just as you do not handycap a model-t when comparing it to modern cars, and you don't do it with fighters either.
For his times he was a very good fighter, but in the grand scheme of things he is a very primitive unsophisticated (even for his time) fighter that relined on power stamina and chin.
Yes but they can have all the best tools in the world, but at the end of the day it mattered what they done in the ring no matter how they done it and Henry done it in pretty convincing style .Yes Henry didn't have the highest of skill bars but does that mean his legcay and achievements should be took away? He had Heart, Cardio Machine, Cast Iron chin, decent head movement, and a very high work rate.So i thinks it a bit of a silly remark. And also he may not have a high as skill as the fighters you named but he was better than all them no matter if he weren't as skilled as them he, that why all fighters are different because they all use there different tools to win.
SRR easily
the only others with any sort of solid claim are armstrong and ali, and ray is still the best
To be onest dude, i think more ''fighters have a claim than just Armstrong and Ali. Angolo Dundde and Carmon Basselio think its Willie Pep. Some Boxing Histroins claim Harry Greb.I once read in a boxing Digest that they thought Sam Langford was the best of all time. Jeff Fench thinks its Roberto Duran. And then other boxing writers/historins/fighters will probaly give a shout out to the likes of Joe Louis,Benny Leonard,Jack Johnson,Marciano,Sugar Ray Lenoard,Gene Tunney,Joe Gans etc.
So i do think alot more fighters have a claim to be the ''best of all time'' rather than just Ali and Armstrong.
It's just a different skill-set. Armstrong is showing a great ability to swarm and slip shots. For instance, at the 4:23 mark, he is within punching range yet manages to slip six consecutive punches. He's getting up close and shortening his blows, particularly to the body, to do more damage. He's fighting very effective at close quarters, showing in-fighting skills. That takes more than just toughness and determination, it takes knowledge and a skill-set of a different kid. It's not what people think of when they talk about "skills" (jabbing, throwing flashy combos, dancing around the ring, etc..), but it's a difficult thing to do and requires skills as well.
Achievements are more important than skills/talent anyway.

Lennox Lewis.
Beat everyone in his era and avenged all his losses.
Dominated the Heavyweight division for years.
The most Skilled Heavyweight ever IMO.
He beats any Heavyweight of any era IMO.
The best chess player of his generation.
He ran shit!
Despite being short, Rocky Marciano beat many exremely tall and truly world-class fighters and he is the only unbeaten Heavyweight Champion of the World in history, so I have always had a soft spot for him.
However, it has to be Muhammad Ali.
How many men could come back after three years out of boxing for refusing to fight alongside your fellow Americans and beat opponents as good as Frazier and Foreman?
Don't forget that he also beat Sonny Liston twice and was a pioneer in relation to the 'Ali Shuffle' and his dancing style.
What a resume, though. That swings it for me.
Just updated the list in the first post. Looking like a land slide win for the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson so far!!
Still waiting on Brockton Lip picking his greates as he listed 4.
I've always found it ridiculous when people include Henry Armstrong in lists about the best of tall time.
All one has to do is watch the man fight and its quite easy to see that the man has virtually no technical ability, can't box a lick, has never heard of a jab, and is one tough son of a bitch.
Being a tough son of a bitch doesn't make you the best. What he accomplished is without a doubt one of the greatest feats in the history of sports, but he was by no means a skilled, or for that matter great fighter in the grand scheme of things.

I'd also go with Walker Smith, but I don't agree with those that say he's "far ahead" of everyone else.
You can make a case for Henry Armstrong, or maybe Sam Langford.

I was just saying I didn't have to go very far back to find someone who is better ability wise.
Whitaker wouldn't need to KO Mayweather, so I don't think he would be hurt by lack of power.
Whitaker's defense is better than Mayweather's prime for prime.
Not only his defense, but his intelligence and movement.
i cant beleive anybody even mentions floyd mayweathers names with any of these guys. to me roy jones at his peak was alot more gifted and impressive than floyd and if you look at his record at the time floyd retires what do you have?
I'd be surprised if 90% of this thread isn't SRR, or Ali
SRR is the greatest.
I didn't know until I read up he was 85(69)-0 as an amateur followed by 175(108)-19-8 as a pro.
For those saying floyd for skill, SRR was floyd but fighting 10 times a year for 20 years in a better era.
Greatest Of All time w/ Accomplishment: Sugar Ray Robinson
Greatest Of All time w/ Impact to the sport: Ali
Greatest Of All time w/ Ability and Technical Boxing Skill: Floyd
Greatest Of All time w/ Heart and Chin: Julio Ceaser Chavez
Greatest Of All time w/ Knock Outs:Archie Moore
Greatest Of All time w/ underated: Harry Greb
Greb defeated 5 world middleweight champions, 7 world light-heavyweight champions, and one world heavyweight champion. Although never much more than a middleweight
But Overall
1. Sugar Ray Robinson
Sugar Ray is considered by the majority of boxing historians as the greatest fighter of all time. He started his career at lightweight but could knock out middleweights with one punch from either hand. Robinson was completely dominant at welterweight. His peak record was 128-1-2. He had a 91 bout winning streak against first class competition. As a fighter he could do it all, he had speed, power, fluid boxing skills, and could take a tremendous punch. He was never physically knocked out in over 200 fights. Not only was the Sugarman the complete package but he was as close to perfection as it gets in boxing.
I'd also go with Walker Smith, but I don't agree with those that say he's "far ahead" of everyone else.

whats up TS
