It appears that veteran blow-by-blow man Steve Albert, who has been at ringside for SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING since 1987, will not return in 2009. Reportedly the new man behind the mike will be Gus Johnson, well known for doing NCAA basketball and NFL football on CBS as well as NBA basketball for the New York Knicks. An official announcement is expected shortly.
from fightnews. I'm sad. Albert was a great commentator.
Some people like the Pat Summerall's and the Joe Bucks. Me personally, I like the commentators that capture the excitement of an event. Gus Johnson gets overly excited about a first down. I think people will like him.
great to hear he made a great nfl commentator but this is boxing . . . i hope hes good and knows his stuff cause its gonna be painful for me if he doesnt.
Bernstein is the best analyst in the sport and one of the nicest guys ull ever meet. if they fire him, showtime loses a lot of its credibility
I agree. Not only that, the Bernstein Albert combination worked wonderfully.
Its nice to watch a fight where the commentators are actually calling the fight instead of bullshitting about other stuff.

Absolutely. The post you responded to was one of the worst opinions I've ever seen here.
they need to get rid of al berntstein. that guy is about as worthless as two chicks with no dick.
Out of all the sidekick commentators that are supposed to provide the analysis of what goes on in the ring, Bernstein is the best imo. And he's not even a former boxer.
He and Gus might end up being the best team in the sport.
Albert was becoming very repetitious so i do not blame them. However, at his best, Albert was really great.
Gus Johnson called Duddy-Campas and did a GREAT job for that fight. He is one of the best in the bussiness. HOWEVER< during a CBS MMA telecast during a boring fight, he said something like "The fans are booing! they want action! this is MMA, not Boxing!!"
I hate him for that but he is definetly very good at what he does
I remember that, but I also remember reading about him being an avid boxing fan so I dont know what that was about.
Gus Johnson?
GUS JOHNSON?!!!
This would be unfortunate news if Gus Johnson wasnt filling in. This guy should have been doing boxing for the big networks a long time ago. He can match Lampley's enthusiasm if not surpass it, and I know he's a fan of the sport.
Hopefully that translates well to boxing. I'm not familiar with him, even though I watch a lot of NFL.
Gus Johnson called Duddy-Campas, did an amazing job.
And he gets excited very easily, which is a good trait as a commentator obviously.
He does some NFL games and he is consistently great

Albert is OK, I never really liked the Showtime commentary team so maybe I'll like his replacement more although it doesn't seem like Gus Johnson has much experience calling boxing.
**** GUS JOHNSON.He dissed the hell out of boxing when he did the kimbo fight. He said something like "this is all action folks this isn't like boxing" Why is he doing boxing? Bet he doesn't know anything about the sport
I remember that.
It was like "fans are booing this is mma not boxing"
I think he was just paid to hype the hell out of mma since it was on network tv.

Gus Johnson is good. He is very excitable. One of my favorite nfl play by play guys
Hopefully that translates well to boxing. I'm not familiar with him, even though I watch a lot of NFL.
