Bruce Lee:
Learn the principle, abide by the principle, and dissolve the principle. In short, enter a mold without being caged in it. Obey the principle without being bound by it. LEARN, MASTER AND ACHIEVE!!!
Knowledge in martial arts actually means self-knowledge. A martial artist has to take responsibility for himself and accept the consequences of his own doing. The understanding of JKD is through personal feeling from movement to movement in the mirror of the relationship and not through a process of isolation. To be is to be related. To isolate is death. To me, ultimately, martial arts means honestly expressing yourself. Now, it is very difficult to do. It has always been very easy for me to put on a show and be cocky, and be flooded with a cocky feeling and feel pretty cool and all that. I can make all kinds of phoney things. Blinded by it. Or I can show some really fancy movement. But to experience oneself honestly, not lying to oneself, and to express myself honestly, now that is very hard to do.
Haha, broke out the Bruce Leeroy diciton.
I literally had to read that like 3 or 4 times to grasp what he was trying to say. LOL...
You know, I don't know if this applies to boxing though.
YES. The Total package is what Cus D'Amato thought of which is why Tyson was the way he was.
Floyd was cool to watch below 147, above that; boring. Smart, but boring. He pisses me off at 147 because he has the talent to do more but chooses not to at that point time. This is why I said before the Hatton fight that Floyd's quote about how he changed mentally because of his kids, and now fights more cautious, worried me going into that fight. Seriously; why change what works?
This is why I say Pac is more exciting than Floyd and would rather watch him fight if given the choice.
Which is why he works as hard as he trains to PROMOTE and SELL his fights now because of less than fan friendly style. He knows that he wont be able to sell a fight on his style alone. Not anymore of course. Very smart dude.
A fighter will use the most effective way he can to win a fight.
Some guys are naturally more aggressive, and some guys are better at reacting, and counterpunching.
A fighter can adjust his style, however he likes, but really a fighter's style is mostly instinctive, IMO.

are you agreeing with what i said by posting this quote Benny?

I would have to say Chavez, I don't know what Roy Jones fights you guys saw but he had a lot of boring ones. He was nowhere near the most exciting boxer when he was P4P #1.
Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez, Whitaker, dela Hoya, Mosley and Roy Jones were quite exciting P4P #1's; The only times being P4P weren't equated with being an exciting fighter was when Hopkins and Mayweather held the title.
But when you say "most exciting fighter" and P4P #1 at the same time, the last time that happened was when Tyson or Chavez held the title. Felix Trinidad, Naseem Hamed and Eric Morales took that title "most exciting fighter" in the 90's and early 2000's. :D
Cus D'Amato:
“When you get hit that’s when you’ve got to be calm. A professional fighter has to learn how to hit and not get hit, and at the same time be exciting. That’s what professional boxing is about. You’ve got to be clever, you’ve got to be smart, and not get hit, and when you’re able to do this, you’re a fighter.”

but the only reason why boxing is a business and televised sport. If all fighters where mental and defensive, we'd have to travel to gyms to watch some boxing.
fighters like the Marquez bros, Roy Jones, Miguel Cotto, Jermaine Taylor etc have shown that you can balance out strategy with excitement.

True, but I think a lot of that has to do with promoters and managers protecting their fighters.
In regards to what we're talking about, you look at a sport like MMA. Almost every fighter, probably 99% of these guys have taken losses at some point in their careers. You hardly have any established guys in there with '0's
The reason for this is because for the most part, you have the best fighting the best. Which is why, in my opinion, the sport is growing so rapidly.
These guys are out there fighting the best, because frankly, they have no choice.
very true. I believe that if boxing wants to compete better, they simply have to cut the orgs down in half. This way like in MMA, the best are more likely to fight the best much more often.
to bad alot of people nowadays dont think like this

exciting is overated..boxing is mental..fighting for the fans is not always a smart move
At the end of the day you HAVE to excite fans in boxing, If you dont then they dont pay to watch you, Boxers have found different way to excite without actually been offensive in the ring though.
no i agree but those same fans leave you for dead when you lose...i guess i meant huggers, bandwagon jumpers
If you mean in terms of fans on a boxing forum, you might be right.
Actually, I think people love to see fighters lose and really see their vulnerability, only to see how well they bounce back. At least I do. This is how, in my opinion, you get to see what a guy is really made of.
When his back is against the wall...and the chips are stacked against him.
How well does he handle that ?
That, to me, is the true measure of a fighter.

You're forgetting that the only reason why these fighters are making these 8 figure paydays is because people pay to watch them fight.
Excitement is KING.
The fans, at the end of the day, are the ones who decide whether or not boxing lives, or dies.
I thought about Roy, for sure.
He was my favorite to watch as a youngster.
But most of his fights were one sided beatdowns, no really epic battles.
A lot of the reason why I watched and loved him so much is because of his sheer dominance.
