Being that he's been out for a year already, and has already clearly stated that he will not be fighting a 'tune-up' fight.
How will this almost 2 year layoff affect Floyd Mayweather Jr...assuming he won't be fighting until at least late 2009 ?
^ I seriously doubt he's in anywhere near fighting shape, and probably been too busy with his extracurricular work to assume otherwise.
Father time eventually does catch up with everyone, even those as physically gifted as Floyd.
Last I heard he was on tour Promoting his Music show...something like that. I can see him still doing push-ups and sit-ups to keep in decent shape for the ladies. Plus, it would look really weird seeing him with a gut and pudgy face. His Father and Uncle still look fit; good genes.
Inactivity kills; A fighter must fight at least every 3 months to be at his absolute best says the Old Timer who I forget said it on Ringside.
Freddie Roach said you can't be a part time fighter and Floyd Sr. agreed.
Mike Tyson said this:
Pay close attention to what he says about Ray Leonard
Note: Ray Leonard had been off 2 years because of his eye problem, came back, and was put on his ass. He did win the fight by KO, but he seemed embarrassed by his performance and retired afterwards. He did come back to fight Hagler which was 3 years later (I think) and won a close fight but Hagler was also a fading fighter and the reason why Leonard took the fight.
Ali was off for 3+ years and came back slower and lost his great ability to move around for the full fight which is why he started hanging on the ropes. Ali said he stamina was never the same when he came back and he was still young. Of course, 2 years is not 3, but inactivity kills.
Jack Dempsey: Went to Hollywood and didn't box for 3 years. When he came back, he wasn't quite the same and lost to Tunney.
Tyson: 3 years in jail and came out looking like shit as far as boxing ability. Of course, most of it may have had to do with his Mental and Physical status together...along with never having a proper trainer like Rooney by his side, but he was shit compared to what he once was. Plus, jail might not be a good thing for a healthy mind. Soooooo, maybe not a great example.
Billy Conn: 4 year layoff ended his greatness. Was KO'd by Joe Louis who also didn't look the same after his layoff because of the War. I think Billy was 29 or 30.
I'll fact check later.

not takin a tuneup provides two things: an awesome, readymade excuse and it gives him a rematch angle
That's true.

Could be bad not to take a tune-up. I haven't boxed as a pro myself, but all I can compare any type of live performance to is being a musician. I could practice and rehearse for months, get everything 100% perfect, but when you actually hit the stage it's a whole different ball game. The only way to stay on top of your game is plenty of regular live experience.

even though hes my favourite boxer,(bhop in close second) i hope he stays retired as i feel he wont b the same fighter as he was, hell b 32, he wont hav fought for at least 18mths so his reactions and speed will not b the same.u only hav to look at de la hoya, how inactivity ruined his body..only fighters dat look after there bodies by staying active like a bhop can still b at the top of their game at 30+..floyd basis for success is speed,so even a marginal loss in that department could b detrimental
Well said. I'll go ya' one further ; any loss in speed or reflexes by FMJ could be catastrophic a la Roy Jones Jr vs Tarver 2.
hopefully it won't affect him as bad as it would do other boxers due to him always being in good shape and i'm sure he would train properly and spar properly, but it's bound to take something away from him... it's a mistake not taking a tune-up IMO
plus his instincts and brain shouldn't have suffered
i hope he stays retired

^ I think it has a lot to do with that, as well as the money. No one is going to want to meet Floyd's ridiculous demands of an 8 figure paycheck for beating up 'Joe Smith'.
And you know Team Mayweather wouldn't take the risk of fighting any legit contender, putting their mega payday at risk.
****ing excuses already... Maybe instead of being an arrogant little prick like floyds used to being, maybe he should have a tune-up so he doesn't give an excuse if Manny or Cotto destroys him.
