If induction into the Hall of Fame was based solely on performance(s) in the ring would Oscar De La Hoya be inducted? Probably not. He will be inducted mostly based on his popularity and his ability to sell pay-per-views.The reasons for his popularity is a subject best left for another thread.Though his impact in boxing cannot be denied, the simple fact is that he never beat any top-tier fighters in their prime with maybe the exception of Ike Quartey. He was a very good fighter that could never step up in his biggest fights. While at 35 he was/is on the downside of his career, his embarassing loss to Manny Pacquiao further proved that he was not as great a fighter as his reputation would lead one to believe. He is one of the better fighters of his generation but that alone would not get him into the Hall of Fame. Take away his popularity amongst the uninformed and youre still left with an above-average fighter, but not one of the greatest. While he must be commended for his willingness to fight the best of the best, one cannot overlook the fact that he - aside from a couple of controversial decisions - rarely prevailed. His charisma, popularity and selling power will get him inducted but the fact remains that when it came time to prove himself, he never did.
1st ballet HOF. No question. There are a lot of much worse fighters then Oscar in already. People need to remember that he beat some pretty good fighters.
