I was just looking at the ESPN boxing schedule and noticed that James Toney will now be facing Fres Oquendo December 13th on Versus. Anyone know why Thompson pulled out of this fight?....
I think this will be a very boring fight. I didn't know Oquendo was still boxing but ohh well I wish him the best, but I think none of them can win a Championship in the HW division.
At first, I thought the same thing. However, I think Oquendo's been trying to work his way back into the mix and winning this fight with a good performance, would obviously help him do that. In contrast, Toney looked decent in his last outing albeit a no contest and would also like to be back in the mix...
IDK if these reasons translate into a good fight, but hopefully they do...:boxing:

Yes, Versus always seems to have great undercards. Hopefully the Chambers fight will be aired as well, as he's to face the tough veteran journyman Cisse Salif...
It is still a good card for cable TV though. I may be wrong, but isn't that the night Andre Ward fights too? If so, Eddie Chambers and Shawn Estrada (US olympic team middleweight, making second pro fight) fight on that card as well. Time constraints could get us the Estrada fight easily. It'd be great if they worked Fast Eddie on.
Yes, we all will watch it because we love the sport, obviously, but he's right in saying it isn't nearly as interesting of a matchup.
I agree, I'm disappointed as well. Oquendo hasn't done anything relevant in the hw division since his controversial loss to Chris Byrd several years ago...
Thompson was injured in training.
Too bad, I was really looking forward to seeing Thompson vs. Toney on Versus - it would have been an intriguing matchup. Toney vs. Oquendo does not interest me.
You'll watch it regardless...
