Great, great fighters have quit on their stool, it's no shame to do so if you have nothing left.
I don't think it's acceptable to quit in certain situations though. People are paying money to see the fights and betting money on the outcomes, if a fighter quits instantly when things are not going his way, he should be criticized for it.
I don't think any dude typing on a keyboard can accuse a professional boxer (who gets punched in the face for a living) of being a coward.
I know it seems cool and heroic to say that you'd die a warrior's death rather than quit on a stool, but what do most people know about being in the pro ring? It's a totally different story when you're the one cut and bleeding from everywhere, seeing birds from head shots, and feeling like you're going to piss blood from body shots all night.
Lamon didn't quit. Buddy McGirt stopped the fight.
if you want to get technical about it yeah.
Lamon however could have gotten himself another round or two if he had wanted it. Buddy says "I'm gonna stop the fight"
Lamon: not even a whisper....
I do have to say that the first time I sparred and got hit by a big right hand was the most memorable "WTF?!" moment of my adult life.
I still haven't really gotten used to it as I don't get in there often enough to really do so. I have Gatti cheekbones and when I fight regularly I end up with a perpetual black eye which is a problem in my line or work.
If you have been at a boxing gym it is more common for a guy to get it the ring once, get hit a couple times and then quit than it is for them to stick around and tough it out.
My trainer put me in to spar with a guy once that weighed 350 and could barely move. First time I cracked him in the ribs and saw the look on his face I knew I wouldn't be seeing him again lol...
I'm sure nobody wants to believe that they are that guy but more than half the people who read my post would go out the same way as Charlie Zelenoff were they to step into a boxing ring tonight.
I could never laugh at a fighter, no matter the record or method of loss.
The fact of the matter is, this person LIVES to fight. They make the sacrifices that you and I just talk about in front of our computers.
Most of us will never kniow what it takes to do what they do on a professional level. And for someone to laugh at a fighter for electing to NOT get his brains beaten out and losing clarity and a future of happiness with his loved ones is absolutely pathetic.
Depending on the circumstances it may be considered dissappointing...but until someone has been punched in the face, head, ribs, stomach, and arms a hundred times or so by a professional boxer they shouldn't laugh at someone. Unless you've been in a professional bout you have no idea what that person is going through or how they feel.
I certainly dont laugh at them for quitting but certain instances a fighter should be questioned.
Lamon Brewster quitting against Wlad for example. You don't call your opponent a sackless sissy and question his heart leading up to the fight and then quit yourself when the going gets tough.
if the fighter wanna quit then let him quit...safety before anything. however, it depends on the situation at hand. if the fighter is losing but can still go till the end..but suddendly quits...then he has no heart. if the fighter is bleeding a pint of blood then let him quit so he won't lose the deadly dose
i think that no one has the right to call a boxer a coward if they haven't had punches flyin at them for 36 mintues straight.
You would have to be a fighter yourself to truly empathize what someone goes through in the ring. It does annoy me a bit when I hear people call a fighter a pussy, coward, etc...and it's usually coming from arrogant joes who wouldn't be able to handle two minutes in that world. I understand people have certain expectations from their fighters but not everyday is a good day and if you decide to go for broke, sometimes it ends very badly.
I never judge a man the slightest bit, unless I've been there myself. It's that simple.
The best post I ever read on a message board about this subject.
It's easy for internet people who have never boxed before to call them cowards. No boxer is a coward, it's a mans game, you have to get punched for a living.
I dont think so because they could be in danger of dying.
OF COURSE NOT... most people who would laugh at such a hting obviously have no idea what it takes to be in an even mild looking fight...punhes that dont appear to carry a lot of weight op power often do...you pay to watch a man go to his physical and mental limits and on some nights their limits arent the same as on other nights...It's a tough tough business, man, and to withstand body shots, liver shots, pains in your legs, ears, jaw....just because a guy doesnt appear to feel the punches or appear to be in pain doesn't mean he isnt...I always tried to mask whatever I was feeling, I didnt want ANYONE to know I was in any distress...been in fights where a guy stepped on my toe and split my big toe nail...a lot of pain...ripped the rotator cuff in my shoulder once...fought through heat stroke once that was so bad that I honestly thought I was in my dressing room THINKING about the fight when I was actually in the middle of the rounds...been cut with blood running in my eyes and the punches making each blow feel as though I was getting sliced with a blade...never actually quit but I certainly had it cross my mind, believe me
I got no problem with it if the guy is taking a lot of punishment. Fighters like Freitas, though, who quit just because they can't win anymore, is a little different.
I maybe with the minority here but im a firm believer in you don't quit no matter what...this "no mas" bullshit don't jive with me...but I do agree 100% that the safety of the fighter comes firts...but that's what the corner, ref, and docs at ring side are for...the corner needs to know their figher...they need to know that by the time most fighters decide to quit it maybe too late...perfect example is the Hatton Maglinine (sp) fight....Yeah doode got pissed that his manager stoped the fight but he didn't look like a puss-e and saved a bit of grace by not quitting...I lose repect for those who quit in the ring...maybe they should have some signal or something they can give to their corner so they know when to call the fight without the boxer actually having to quit infront of all the cameras and all their fans...
I suppose it is their job...
