My own take:
I don't think Mayweather was too out of line. The man is rather small to contend with the top, full-size welters like Clottey, Margarito and Williams. He had other lucrative options, like actually winning a title from Baldomir, and money-making fights with Judah (who was a very interesting matchup at the time and proved to be a difficult fight for Floyd in the beginning), De La Hoya and Hatton (both of the latter made Floyd far more than 8 million).
On the other hand, Tony already lost to Williams and has incentive to redeem himself. He claims to be the most feared man in boxing, when Williams clearly is. He turned down the Paul Williams fight to fight a man with no title. Fighting Mosley is equivalent to Mayweather fighting Judah in that both men lost their last title fight and have no titles, yet remain big names. Even still, Margarito is taking a 2 million dollar paycut to face Mosley and those numbers are more significant then they were before because of how tight the cable networks are now as of the recession.
Not trying to hate here. I rooted for Margarito against Cotto and was a huge fan, but I have to admit that I have been turned off by his utter avoidance of Paul Williams.... Your thoughts?!
Let's not forget this is a business also and no one can represent" YOU" better than yourself and Mayweather does this well. I think Margarito is trying to the same thing but is going about it the wrong way.

Damn, what you're saying about Judah is true. If Margarito and Baldomir had fought, who would you pick? Both are limited boxers with hard heads.
Margarito is a much better fighter and has proven it against world class comp on a consistent basis. Carlos hasn't. Still, it would probly be entertaing for awhile till Margs turned it into a slaughter in the mid to late rounds. Baldo just wouldn't have the power to keep Margs at bay.

I don't begrudge Mayweather the buisness aspect of the game. He has been blessed with his money making decisions. Unfortunetly, he hasn't been blessed with the decisions that concern his legacy in some time. JMO.
Margarito since he is ducking a guy that beat him. It would be avenging a damn loss. The worst part is he is ducking him to fight Shane ****ing Mosley and he will duck him some more after the Cotto fight.
Baldomir best win was against Judah was the the man at WW, Mayweather fought him for 8 million WBC TITLE and ring title instead of Margarito's WBO title and also Mayweather had money unpaid to him by Arum for the Judah match
Why was Judah "the man"? Was he beating all the best welters, moreso than the other titlists? And the "lineal" title means little nowadays except as a reference to trace back history. It doesn't automaticly make you the best as it did when there was only one champion per division.
As far as Arum owing for the Judah fight..........what does that have to do with Floyd fighting Baldomir instead of Margarito? If Floyd wanted to work something out he would have. Istead he never fought Margs, Cotto, Williams, Clottey etc.
But back to the original thread title. All this is exactly why it was worse that Floyd ducked Margs compared to Margs ducking a guy he has already fought and declined him an immediate rematch.
With all due respect my friend, how do you figure? Judah WAS looking good at the time, but he still hadn't proved he could be consistent and live up to his potential. This is easily reinforced by him blowing the Baldomir fight which was a fight, if in the right frame of mind he would win almost 100% of the time. And Baldomir, for all his grit and toughness was one of the most least skilled champions I've seen in many, many years.

Thats easy to say right now, but at the time Judah and Baldomir were clearly the best fights at WW. If he had chosen another WW past that point Margarito would have been a good choice, but the DLH fight came along.

So what. He was still the weakest titlist out there. THAT isn't that hard to figure out. I mean seriously, how many successful defenses did he have? What was his comp like up to that point? You see where Im going? Floyd was a great fighter. There is no denying that. But he spent his time at 147 fighting has beens, front runners and never were's.

Baldomir was the LINEAR CHAMPION OF THE WORLD!!!
Come on people, this isnt that hard to figure out.

At least he fought him.
both but floyd still suck more.
We all knew Floyd was about getting top dollar. He told Margarito once you become bigger, we will fight and to this day his name hasn't gotten any bigger.Mayweather got the same amount of money that was offered by Arum to fight the real champion in Baldomir, which set up a career payday with Oscar. Margarito asked for a rematch when he lost his title to Williams but guess he forgot he wasn't shot calling anymore once he lost his belt. Once Margarito regained his title,he refused the challenge of Williams because he knows he can't beat him even though he was offered a career payday. Sure as hell sounds like fear to me especially when he can't fight anyone that will bring him that type of money. If Mayweather is scared of Margarito, Margarito is sure as hell scared of Williams.
Margarito ducking Williams cuz
1. Margarito hadn't beaten any1 worth shit at the time
2. Floyd fought Baldomir for $8 million. The same Margarito apparently offered
3. Margarito aint a draw. Not yet at least
Margarito took less money to fight Mosley. Floyd took the same amount to fight a different opponent.
Who had Bldomir fought? Margarito already had his title for a few years and was an established force at 147, defending his title 6 times with 5 ko's by the time Floyd moved up. Bottom line is.....Floyd took the easiest avenue to a title at 147 and still never fought the divisions best. Now Margs may not be the fighter Floyd is, but he is fighting the toughest guys in his division on a pretty consistent basis. Floyd did anything but that at 147.

Floyd ducking Margs was worse. Margarito already fought Williams once as well as a bunch of other top welterweights. Floyd fought Baldomir who never did anything in the division except beat an unfocused Judah, then he fought Judah who just lost to Baldo. all this after he told Margarito he would meet him "down the road" yet never did.
Margarito SHOULD be wanting Williams right now. But he's tasken him on one more time than Floyd did him.
Floyd can hold a press conference and ADMIT that he ducked these fighters, yet his fans still wont believe it. They'll make up some upsurd exuse about how Floyd is just saying that for (insert reason)
Dumbest post ever.If you think people really think like this you are lost. Like someone said in a previous pos "when Mayweather doesn't fight someone he's scared but when another fighter does it, it's because of the promoters".Looks like everyone else has the execuses.
The offer was actually $4mil not 8. Secondly, from what im hearing, Margarito wanted an immediate rematch following the loss, and it was Williams who initially declined.
How can a a champion who just won his belt decline a mandatory. A mandatory that Team Margarito petitioned for as they say.
If they petitioned for it and if they wanted it so bad, it would've happeneed.
I feel Margarito should indeed rematch Williams in order to avenge his loss, but you do have to give the man credit in the first place for taking the challenge and fighting him in the first place. All you heard from Floyd was 101 excuses for why he didnt want to fight Margarito AT ALL.
I give credit to Hopkins for fighting a upcoming Taylor who he did not have to fight. Maragarito being forced to fight his mandatory who challanged him to back up his Most feared tag because he was ready to vacate his belt.
Not so much. One loss later, he still wasn't too eager to get in the ring with him and avenge his loss and get his title back.
